Hi all, I did a foolish thing and went down to the local guitar shop yesterday and tried out a few guitars. Amongst the Fenders they had a "Lone Star" Strat "mim" it had "Texas specials" in the middle and neck positions and a Seymour Duncan "Pearly Gates" hum bucker in the bridge position. Needless to say I was quite taken with it.
Has anyone any experience or views on this guitar bearing in mind that I play (sorry try to play) an eclectic range of music styles with a large emphasis on the Shadows music.
Regards
Les

Hi Les, For Shads music you really want a single coil in the bridge position. Nothing to stop you using a humbucker but you wont get the right sound. With the H S S configuration if it works like my sons MIM HSS strat with a 5 way switch you cant get a one pickup single coil option for the bridge. The lone star seems to be the same looking at the specs. www.fender.com/en-GB/products/search.php/?partno=0139410380Check to see if the humbucker can be coil tapped to work as a stand alone single coil it may a require a wiring modification and perhaps a separate switch or a push pull on one of the tone pots. I am sure you will get further advice shortly George

Lots of players use that pickup configuration because 3 single coils do not 'drive' heavy distorion so they would switch to the humbucker for that. Its a good all rounder and worth buying if thats what you do. For example if you were playing the Eagles track 'Hotel California' as per the record you might play all the verses on one of the clean single coils then for the famous solo you would swith to the humbucker with a driven setting and it would sound really good. For dedicated shads stuff you would probably be quite unhappy with the humbucker as it lacks brightness and clarity so consequently you would have a miss-match in the bridge pickup. The answer is two guitars. Dave

Hi Les,
I think you want the Roadhouse Strat with three Texas Special single coils. It was marketed at the same time as the Lonestar and for a similar price. It's otherwise identical.
Dave.

Many thanks for your replies. With this advise in mind I went back to the shop and tied the guitar again and then tried the standard strat against it.
Being honest with myself the Standard had the better sound for what I wanted to play so I bought it .Now the Strat clone will have to go on the well known auction site.
