I have been working through the night (nothing new for me as many of you will know, this is mainly because I can work better without interruptions) to get the new Q2 programs finished. I have actually finished all the ones I was originally going to include, but I've found some more unusual ones that were written by special request for a few customers and there are now a total of 79 patches. The additional ones work of course as they were already written but need converting to a different input system that I have devised for the new program set. This arrangement allows the choice of having reverb, on the echo programs that have it included, by using the R(MONO) input and R output, or having echo without the added reverb on those same programs by using the L input and L output.
I have made many changes to most programs in addition to the conversion mentioned, mainly to address comments I have seen about the programs, particularly more recently. There was mention of the Q2 sounding overprocessed so I have seen to that. Also, for the Echomatic 2 programs I have raised the input level to the processor blocks (by a massive 9dBs) so that the echo will distort in a similar way to the original when playing hard (works well for the ending of The Savage and KonTiki). The downside to this is that the processor is continually monitored for signal overload, so the red overload lights may occasionally flash even though the input is not actually overloaded.
I am now retiring for the night (what's left of it) and should finish later today, then all I have to do is to write the instructions and update the paperwork to reflect the changes. I hope to have it all ready by the next evening.
Anyone interested in purchasing should start thinking about MIDI in and out cables and a suitable MIDI adaptor. The best deal these days seems to be the Edirol UM-1EX which includes two MIDI cables and sells for around £30.
The inputs of the Q2 ideally need modification by removing two small capacitors. Instructions for this will be included for the most common types of main board (actually will cover every type of Q2 board I have worked on), but for those who don't want to open up their unit a buffer amp such as a modern effects pedal (without true hard wired bypass) with the effect switched off should do the trick. A wireless system should also solve the problem of treble loss that the capacitors can cause. Anything that has a high impedance input of at least 200K and a low output impedance of less than 4K should work well.
I will anounce further updates very soon.
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Charlie,
The new Q2 files were well received at the Hankies last night
"Flingel" is bang on and I think the programs compare favourably with
the EFTP for the Q20.
I'll let you know more after I've done some more comparisons.

Hi Sheedigs,
I would appreciate it if you could email me the Freeloader file. I could then send it out for customers to use if they want. Could you also tell me if it installs OK in Win XP?
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Amanda,
I'm pleased to hear the news about how the new Q2 programs were received.
Roughly how many different players used it?
I have one customer friend who has used a Q2 with EFTP for many years and he has compared the new programs with his Q2 and finds that in his opinion some of the original programs sound better than the new ones, one in particular is Abbey Road Reverb but there are a few others.
I am going to look again at the new programs and see if some changes are in order.
This does not mean that I will use the old programs again but will further modify the new ones to take some parameters back in the direction of the old ones.
If I change any, I will update all customers of the new programs with a new data file.
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Charlie
I have sent the Freeloader zipped file as requested. I checked and it is not more available on the Alesis site and lots of links point to nothing. I am using Windows XP and it works fine. As for Vista Users, I doubt it will work..
I will be testing it tomorrow and will let you know how it went..

Hi sheendigs,
Thank you for sending it. It might work with Vista, but would depend on the install routine I think. If it installs, then it can be run in compatibility mode for XP.

Charlie

Hi Charlie,
If you are using Vista, this may be one of those programmes where you might have to disable the User Account Control before you install and use it.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks, you are probably right. I use XP and will not need this program for myself but it could be very useful for customers of the Q2 programs.

Hi Charlie,
One of my friends in Canada asked me a interesting question..
Would the presets that you created for the Q2....work on Alesis Q20?

Hi Sheendigs,
The dump will not work properly although it might sort of work. Even if it did work, the input configuration for the Q2 programs is wrong for the Q20.

Charlie

The Q2 programs are now ready for sale. The price is £135. Payment can be by Paypal from a Paypal account holder.
The price allows the installing of programs to one Q2 unit. I must have the serial number (Q255..) and the name and address of the user before sending files. If there is no serial number (also meaning if the unit's serial number has been removed and lost) then I cannot supply the files. Files will be sent by email. To program any further Q2 the files must be purchased again. The files include one sysex data file and several Word doc files. The docs include more operational information than ever was given with any Q2 I programmed myself, because I don't have to pay for the paper and ink now, and because there is more information the user is less likely to require back up help, at least I hope so!
The programmed Q2 can be sold with the programs installed at any price the seller asks. All of the original files or exact copies of them must be transferred with the Q2 and all copies remaining must be destroyed immediately after transfer.
One of the files is full of information about checking a Q2 for proper operation and installing the programs, and gives some detail about servicing and maintenance. Anyone who would like to see this file before purchasing is welcome to do so if they request it by email: charliehallATntlworld.com (replacing AT with @).
I hope that the Q2 now becomes a more affordable option for those who want one programmed.
Regards,
Charlie

Hi Charlie,
thanks for your quick response. First I will check my Q2, now.
Regarding paypal I have some objections. Could I transfer money, e.g. in advance to your bank account?

Thomas
