As requested by a number of members, I have done a recording of Wonderful Land with the Hall & Collins echo. Backing track is derived from the Shadows original version without the orchestra and other overdubs, as heard on 50 Golden Greats CD. Some trace of Hank remains at all times. Played on my blue replica 50s style Strat fitted with Gibson L-5 12-56 (12, 16, 25w, 34, 44, 56) strings, pickups on a ready loaded pickguard supposedly taken from a 56NOS Strat. Bridge pickup, all controls on 10, 3 metre guitar cable, into the prototype echo unit, patch Echomatic 2 4 Wonderful Land, all controls at default settings, into Standel clone amp with speaker disconnected, into Palmer PDI-03 speaker sim, into computer. Some EQ after recording to get as close as I think I can to the original sound, some compression and some manual re-levelling of individual notes. If anyone wants to hear my guitar track separately from the backing, I can post that too. I hope you like it. Comments are welcome. Wonderful Land Hall Collins Echo.mp3Edit: Later work on the same recording. Applied lots of narrow band EQ changes to the guitar track only to more closely match the original curve, replaced the opening first phrase with the first phrase from the fadeout, and altered the mix balance with the backing track louder and the guitar track quieter. Wonderful Land Hall Collins Echo 2.mp3Regards, Charlie

Hi Peter and Scott, Thanks for your kind comments. Every little variation in the echo sound that I heard on the original recording has been accounted for in the new Echomatic 2 patches. I have uploaded the guitar only file: WLand Hall Collins echo guitar only.mp3Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie,
I don't have the original without the strings, but comparing your file to the version I have (Shadows Platinum Collection) There is literally nothing to choose between the Shadows version and your version in terms of echo, particularly noticeable during the muted section. I thought your guitar sound is slightly less "rounded" than Hanks even with the heavier gauge strings - but that may be the difference in the Shadows recordings.
It's a terrific demonstration of what yours and John's new unit is capable of and also of your playing skills.
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi Charlie I think to sum it all up, if the man himself needed a Hall & Collins Echo, you would have no problem convincing him. You have certainly convinced me. With what you and John have achieved so far, I have no doubt the finished product will be top class and will be widely acclaimed.

Hi Charlie,
That's a great 'wonderful' sound - very rich warm tones with constantly varying nuances in wow & flutter etc - some echo units can be lifeless in their robotic repeats but this unit really does add character and life to each note. Difficult to put into words but you instinctively know something's right when you hear it - and to my ears this is.
Incidentally, is there any added reverb built into the patch? I ask because it has that lingering slightly distant sound that reverb can sometimes add.
I'm also intrigued by the 'Standel clone amp' - can you explain what this is and what it's doing?
Started saving the pennies already for my H&C unit . . .
Cheers, Martyn

Thanks for all your comments.
Hi Martyn, There is no added reverb, as it's just an echo unit. The Standel clone amp is a circuit clone of a 25L15, the same type used by Chet Atkins. Each of the originals was custom built for the player so there were variations around the design. It is closer to class A than an AC30 and has a lot of compression when driven hard. It also has a cut control, except it is located in a different part of the circuit to a Vox. I have added your name to the list.

Hi Martyn, There will some traces of reverb from Hank on the recording, it could be that you are hearing. If you listen to my guitar only file you'll find out whether you were hearing Hank or me! Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie,
The echo sound and pattern are very close to the original indeed. Did you use lighter string gauges and plain G on you guitar Charlie?

Robby

Yep, that's it. I'm sold now. I want one. I just had to hear this pedal on everyone's favourite Shads tune. That's as close as it gets to "THAT SOUND" we're all after. Thank you, Charlie, and best of luck with the new product when it is released.

Hi Charlie, Fantastic sound, whils't listening to it i thought at times I was listening to the original, so uncannily close to the original is that. I think to be fair, the shadows would record it then it would be fettled in the studio, mixed and wot-not to get to get to a point were they were happy with the overall sound presentation for the record.
If i may say that given the fact that you have just played to the backing track at home with guitar through the echo box and still get so close as to find it difficult to tell the difference, that is some achievment.
cheers Peter

Good work with the playing on this one too, Charlie. Sounds good from where I am, which is under a palm tree on a beach in Thailand, listening on a borrowed notebook, with a "Low Fi "set of headphones I managed to buy yesterday in a street market! ;D Using the backing version without strings was a good idea, as it means the guitar track, and echo tails, stand out a little more.

Hi Charlie.
Given the Wonderful land sound has been near impossible to find, this comes so very close. And from a very basic set up as well, which I would think most people have, and also be able to adjust their gear to suit. Very impressive. Outstanding work Charlie.

Hi Charlie What a great sound, bring on the new unit. I cannot get anywhere near your sound with my American Strat, Q20 and VoxAC15 Heritage amp. Is it all down to the Hall & Collins, or am I just a crapp player? ?? Well done Charlie, you have a winner there. Bill
