Today I received an enquiry as to whether I had recorded a backing track for Hank Marvin's version of "Red River Rock". I wasn't aware of Hank or The Shadows having recorded that number and a quick search confirmed that.
However, my curiosity was aroused and after doing some checking on the internet I found that that number had been recorded by a group calling themselves The Shades of Grey. I found a copy of the album on the well known auction site and in my opinion the cover makes every effort to make it appear that the recording artists are The Shadows. The item number on the well known auction site is 120697484256 - see what you think.

Hi Roger,
I think you are right, and it's not the first time I have seen this sort of adverse selling tactic. A few years ago my Father bought a CD With Very Large "The Shadows" lettering and in quite small text above it were the word"The Apaches play hits of", my Father bought the CD believing it to be by the Shadows.
Kind regards,
Chris

Hmmmm
Interesting thread, I have the "Shades of Grey" cd & was not under any illusion about it being anything other than a "covers" cd
The other cd mentioned by the "Apaches" has a different track listing & may or may not be by the same people as the "20 years of" cd.
When is a "scam" not a "scam" ?
I personally like the "Shades of Grey" cd & after looking again at the front of the cd do not feel there is any intent to mislead.
Has anybody really been misled by these cd's ?
Interested to hear from them
Cheers
Dick

I agree this is a sales gimmick that could mislead a buyer into thinking is was the Shadows. It's bit like the cheap CD for sale on a market stall by a 60's band but in fact is a later rerecording by the band as it is now with perhaps only one band member still remaining, the drummer or something. The resulting sound is terrible and nothing like the original. My old mum fell for that one more than once. I never had the heart to tell her as she thought she had "treated me" to the genuine article. It goes on !! Seems like you still have to read the small print. George.

Hi George I was specifically referring to the "Shades of Grey" cd in my reply above. I do completely agree you about these "Greatest Hit's" cd's that you see at a "bargain" prices turning out to be poor quality re-recordings (usually "live") that you really do have to read the small print (sometimes very small) to get the true story. Just a thought........ I had the "UB Hank 4" cd to hand & nowhere on the front or back of the cd case does it mention that the cd is "cover versions". Inside the slip cover it does of course list the musicians playing on the cd. Hi Brian....... The players on the "Shades of Grey" cd are (I presume) session musicians who received a fee for their work & would have no control over the marketing of the cd Cheers Dick

Brian, in a book I read recently it mentioned the b bumble situation.. but also that they were in fact coloured musicians and the white guys you see on the LP covers are in fact blow-ins who were used for publicity and tours. Cheers Peter

Hi Peter, the guy who played piano on nut rocker was actually a white american called Al hazan, he was brought in as a last minute replacement, the record was done in one take allthough he wanted to do it again he made a new album last year with much simular tunes like nut rocker take a look at this it might be of interest. regards Brian en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nut_Rocker
