Keith Richards used an open G tuning a lot ie an A chord but two frets lower than in the open position - let me explain ...
Tune the 6th string down from E to D. Tune the 5th string down from A to G. Leave the 4th string at D Leave the 3rd string at G Leave the 2nd string at B Tune the 1st string down from E to D.
Now you should have a very pleasant "G" chord if you just play all of the open strings. Obviously a simple barre with the 1st finger will change that chord as you move up and down the neck. For example a barre at the 5th Fret is a "C" chord. Very simple to play if you're intoxicated .....say no more ! A lot of slide players use this tuning as it's easy to add other fingers into the mix to create some great sounds.
Now try the barre at the 5th fret and adding 2nd finger 2nd string 6th fret and 3rd finger 4th string 7th fret - and you've got an "F" chord. That's the basic "Brown Sugar" riff - Start 12 fret with 2nd and 3rd fingers in place strum - lift off 2nd 3rd fingers leaving barre at 12 fret strum - move barre down to 5th fret strum twice add 2nd & 3rd fingers strum twice take off 2nd & 3rd gingers leaving barre at 5th et voila Brown Sugar (riff then moves 8th fret 5th fret 1st fret 3rd fret 5th fret)
Add a capo at 3rd fret and you've got the Dire Straits Romeo & Juliet riff (starts 5th fret with 2nd & 3rd fingers on but this time add 4th finger 7th fret, then a single barre at 5th fret, then totally open strings (which is really a Bb because of the capo) - experiment - you'll get the hang !
Its great fun - everyone should try it !!
But back to the original post - how one earth would he learn guitar properly tuned to A ! - My daughter is learning on a 3/4 size fender nylon strung (great guitar and only about £60) tuned to standard tuning - no problemo !
cheers mark.

Splendid Charlie - absolutely splendid
Would be interested to hear how the new unit responds to pick dynamics - if you hit the strings hard how does it react ??
keep up the great work Charlie - we all appreciate your dedication

Hi Charlie
Just stumbled across the 36-24-36 demo - it's awesome and probably one of the best I've heard across the boards - in terms of echo / tone and playing
this is going to be some unit !!!

If it is - I saw one for sale last week in Simply Guitars in New Milton, don't know what price - but worth giving them a call 01425 626070

Hi All I was going to email Amanda off line but thought others may benefit from this question. My AC30 HH has a lot of hum on the TB channel so I'm considering changing the pre-amp valves. Then I thought - well maybe I should carry a complete spare set of valves when gigging, as no doubt at some time somewhere, a value will need replacing ! That set me thinking about output valves (EL84's) and biasing. Am I right in thinking the AC30 is a cathode biased amp and therefore requires no bias changes when installing new EL84's - is it simply a plug and play scenario ? I know other amps need a visit to a valve whizz to be correctly biased when changing output valves. think I've confused myself Mark.

It think its definately horses for courses.
The ESE controls are very sensitive and do interact, but the guitar just seems so much warmer and have far more of a vintage vibe. I got some good results at the weekend feeding the ESE into the Q20 with Charlies Abbey Road Reverb setting (set at around 25%) then into an AC30 Heritage EF86 channel. Although it appears really sensitive to any changes - moving from a cable to a radio system meant several hours re-eq ing.
Without doubt the Q20 is easiest to use live and the echo patterns are (obviously) more accurate - I've programmed our set list in order and use a footswitch to tab through them.
I always liked the Quad GT sounds as these were warmer to my ears - although the units are noisier.
Was it the sound in general or the echo patterns which you were disappoined with ?
I'll try and record some comparisons when I get the chance - don't hold your breath though - I'm trying to fly to Stockholm out of the UK snow right now !
I have a work in progess to chart my settings for the ESE email me off line if you need anything - not necessarliy accurate, but works for me !

Finally got round to re-testing again today - without any problems ! The only difference being that the ESE was physically on top of the Q20 before - clearly there was some kind of interference. Sited apart everything is perfect !

Hi Charlie,
The Q20 was fine on its own and fine on bypass. I'll try the other things you suggest later and report back
regards
Mark.

Hi Charlie / all, was messing around with my set up this weekend (why do we do that ) and tried feeding the output of my ESE tape echo into my Q20 using the Nivram or Abbey Road reverb programs (1-65 / 1-66) to try and re-create the recorded shads sound. The resultant sound was very distorted - tried the same set up with my magic stomp on Abbey Road setting and results were quite pleasing. So to be clear, the signal path is: Guitar - ESE - Q20 - AC30 Even with the input levels turned down on the Q20, it seemed to be overloaded ! Anyone else experienced anything like this ? regards Mark.

Have to agree - it's got a lot more cheerful around here ! Just one minor point - I think our ex-admin made a couple of posts "sticky" or permenant on the general board - don't understand why Jet Harris appearing in Solihull needs to be sticky nor 2 separate threads on having a chatroom need to be sticky (no offence Amanda ....)
