Hi Dionne, The different midi instruments on your midi track may all be Panned to Central in which case everything is fighting to survive in that frequencey within the mix. I use sonar 5 and when I import a midi track it will seperate all the instruments to individual tracks, this way I can leave the Bass in the centre and pan the other instuments left or right and leave the guitar in the middle at final mixdown but in stereo. I have used a lot of midi files and they are more difficult than BT's to get right because at the end of the day you have to convert it into one audio track. What does help is when converting into the audio backing track make sure its in stereo. If the instruments on your midi track dont get separated and panned your dilemna may not improve. Regards Tony

The quality of any backing track is only as good as the instruments you use.
If you use a standard GM setup, then the quality of the track won't be as good as if you used a virtual instrument such as Dimension Pro or samples of real instruments.
The Midi's I use to do exactly the same thing you do are normally panned L/R and the volumes set when the file is written.
When you convert the Midi tracks to Audio, you sometimes need to adjust the volumes but the Pan is usually OK.
Recording from the Headphone Out socket is never going to give you a good sound, except on headphones, you may like to look at upgrading the way you work if you want better sounding midi's,but be warned,it gets expensive.
