My 1st post!! I live in South Africa and am the biggest Shadows fan in the country! I went to their 1963 concert at the Colliseum theatre in Johanesburg but cannot remember if I was at their classic March 1961 show at the same venue. I have the live recording on CD (Shadows EP Collection Vol 2). It's unbelievable - drive, energy, drumming and tone. A muso friend told me that they hired Gibson amps from a local music store for the show (not their usual Vox backline) and the amps distorted beautifully. Anyone know if the "Gibson story" is true? What a great Shadows site Charlie!! Well done and keep it going! Regards, Shadowman

I have always heard that for the live EP recorded at the Colosseum in Johannesburg in 1961, they used Fender amps. I guess they toured there at this time without bringing their Vox amps, and only used borrowed amps, not necessarily the same for all venues.

Hi Shadowman,Didier, I also live in South Africa (as you know, Didier) and saw them here in Port Elizabeth in both '61 and '63. We went autograph hunting at the "Feather market" Hall where they playing on the afternoon of the Show in '61 and saw them from a side door rehearsing on stage, the Amps were definately Gibsons. I remember the Buzz that caused amongst the local Bands who expected them to use Vox's as we saw them use in news reel clips in the Bioscope at the time! I met Bruce back stage on the opening nite of their final tour in Scarborough 30/04/2004, I asked him about the Gibsons and he was quite surprised that I could remember that and he confirmed it. Best Regards Johann

I'm from South Africa and my late dad went to both 1961 and the 1963 tours in Cape Town.He specifictly told me that they didn't have vox amps in 1961.He said that they had 2 matching colour strats so I'm asuming that it was the fiesta red ones with rosewood fretboard. He did noticed the vox amps at their 1963 tour with the two new members in the band (Brian Bennet & Licorice Locking). He could also remember Hank playing piano on stage.I did not asked him about the strats.I missed both tours as I was only born in 1967 but finally had the change to see them in their 2010 South African tour.

Hello, I dig up this topic to see if anyone has a picture of the Shadows on stage at the Colosseum in 1961. Thank you.
