I'm new to shadmusic though at 53 I've certainly heard many of their tunes and having only "just" got into strats since 07/08 I would like to know what gauge would be best used to obtain that sound. Until I bought the strats I was using 11-52 but I found them too "hard" even working the trem'lo.Now I'm down to 10-46 but after having seen an interview of Hank on u-tube I wonder if he used an even lighter gauge. He doesn't specify which gauge he uses/used. Compliments to Charlie and all members for a truly useful and positive forum.

Hi George, Hank uses three different gauges and has three Strats set up for one of each gauge. 10-46 is the lightest gauge he uses for newer material when he wants to easily bend the strings. His normal set is 11's, and for playing the older material he uses 12's. I think I read somewhere he mentioned that the original gauge at the time the earliest hits were recorded would have been 13's, almost certainly with a wound 3rd. To bend notes with such heavy strings he had to use the tremolo arm. I don't think Hank would have used anything lighter than 10's. He has the action on his guitars higher than I could play comfortably with so he must have fairly strong hands. I can't play well with anything heavier than 10's. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, That is twice now that I have read a comment of yours that Hank had the action set so high on his guitars that it was uncomfortable for you to play. Why would he do that ? Are there benefits to be had by it ? Ray

Hi Ray, As much as I'd like to, I am not able to answer your questions. I can only assume that he was used to it that way from the very early days. Hank uses 3 different sets of string gauges. I do not know which gauge was on the guitar I played. I just didn't think about it at the time. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie & Ray,
I seem to recall when Hank started to play, the guitar he used had too much relief in the neck which was not adjustable and would cause problems playing around the middle of the neck. I have no idea of the make of guitar used. Maybe he adjusted the string height to compensate for this and got used to it when he changed guitars and left it that way.
Regards, Tim.
