The Breeze and I:-
Rhythm: Bruce Welch Drums: Brian Bennett Bass: Brian Locking Strings etc: Norrie Paramor Orchestra.
If anyone else has the same CD as I have "The Shadows in the 60s"(EMI Music For Pleasure 1989) then put it in your player and turn the balance control on your amp all the way to the left which nicely eliminates HBM whose guitar appears to be panned hard right. O.K. it's not perfect(you can still hear Hank(barely) but he sounds like he's at high altitude somewhere in the next town! And your guitar will easily override his.
Now if all the recordings were like that then we wouldn't have to play along with dodgy simulations etc.
I've tried all the other tracks in my collection and this is the only one that works as described....pity.

Theme for Young Lovers--Shindig--The Rumble are a few to name and if you pan a lot of the other hits you can get rid of Bruce. It must have been a recording technique back in the 60s....

Thanks for that Gary..........any others?
Not so much a recording technique of the '60s. I have the original 45's and a few of the original albums and panning doesn't work on these.
"The Breeze and I" recording I have, on which it does work, is dated 1989.
As I don't have much in the way of compilation CDs I would like to find out from you and others, who do have them, which tracks can be effectively panned and from which compilation CDs.
Jay.

That's presumably (correct me if I'm wrong) because they're mono 45s/albums whereas later recordings were either genuine stereo or simulated stereo remixes. It's strange but I was listening to digitally remastered early Beatles tracks recently and they just don't sound right in stereo. They're interesting to hear but of a more modern era somehow.

Martyn you are probably right........the bit about original mono recordings sounding better is I think more to do with what goes on in the brain...I mean once you hear something which you really like it seems to be forever etched into the mind as it were and no other version whether by a cover artist or by mixing the original tracks ever seems to be able to replace it even though we may admit that the alternative version is very good..... just not the same or as good.

Enrico Marcelo in his demo of the Alesis on You Tube says he is playing Wonderful Land to the original Shadows backing-and he is. Does anyone know how he did this or has he simply panned the lead out of a stereo recording. I can't hear any other lead though, however faint.

I could be mistaken, but I think I remember Enrico saying that he used the instrument cancelling capability of the Tascam Guitar Trainer.
