Hi I changed the strings on the USA Strat today and also needed to test a setting on my Zoom camera recommended by Peter from our club which worked very well so I did a few test recordings. Usually I post in the Members Soundfiles area but think it was less than a week that I last posted so will post Cavatina here instead. It was a good one to play for the camera as I messed it up at our club meeting earlier in the month www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7uK3sivR0UIt's played with a Zoom G2.1Nu with EFTP through a VOX AC15 but just with the normal channel and no treble or bass adjustments. There are a few timing problems at the start and it still needs lots of work but this is about as well as I can play it at present. Best wishes Rosemary

Hi Lou Thanks for your encouragement. Yes the timing is off in a few places especially the beginning. At our last meeting I really messed up the beginning and think since then it's given me a mental block or a phobia or something but hopefully with more practice I'll get past that. Headphones sound a good idea. Thanks. Best wishes Rosemary

Rosemary, that was absolutely smashing , your coming on in leaps and bounds, no serious timing issues there just some slight hesitation in expression is all and that will correct itself when you become more familiar with the fingering: This is not an easy tune to play , no heavy down beat to keep you up to speed etc: I think you did great: Regards, Frank:

Hi Rosemary, I agree with comments made by other members above, a little work needed on the timing and good progress being made I thought the sound was a little better on this with regard to the BT level, but you were perhaps a little loud in the mix with the lead guitar. Kind regards, Chris

Thanks Frank and Chris I'll use the volume pedal on the Zoom when I've fixed the timing too. It was 32C yesterday and the fan was on the floor and I couldn't reach the unit. Best wishes Rosemary

Hi Rosemary Only a few small issues. Sounds great. One of my favourites to play as well. You can always blame the timing on heat haze ! Well played, and will sound fantastic with a bit more practice.
Cheers Richard

Hi Pete, Frank and Richard Thanks for your encouragement Richard. It would be nice to be able to blame it on the heat but unfortunately I can't Apparently we're in for 39C on Tuesday. That's pretty extreme for here. Best wishes Rosemary

Hi Rosemary !
Well done ! Since the Cavatina is a very slow tune some may think it's easy to play . . . I recently watched Hank playing the Cavatina at the Liverpool concert some years ago. It's interesting how he's treating his guitar, just like his bride. And that's the way how it should sound. Not easy. Because it's slow everbody can hear the least fault. You played some wonderful bendings, but the hardest one (at 2:03) which is a full tone you replaced by a slide. OK, it takes some time of practice, some strings are harder to bend than other, and it depends at which fret it has to be done. I'm sure you'll make it. I had noticed that at the very beginning a string seems to be slightly out of tune, or you had rested your right hand too heavy on the trem bar. But maybe I'm wrong . . .
Cheers Gerhard

Hi Gerhard Thanks for listening. There are quite a few problems that need ironing out and I'll take a look at that extra bend. I still have problems with intonation especially the 2nd string. It went out at our meeting last weekend too despite spending ages tuning before - either that , or maybe as you say I could still be subconsciously leaning on the trem bar. Thanks Best wishes Rosemary

Hi Mike Thanks. If you select and copy your YouTube URL showing in the address bar of your browser and paste it into your message on Charlie's site that should work. I'd love to hear your version too. Have a very happy Christmas too. Best wishes Rosemary

Hi Rosemary !
Intonation - when you change strings from light to heavy or vice versa resp. most of the time ist's necessary to adjust intonation, that means the length of the string (between saddle and bridge) has to be adjusted. If you have already done then skip, otherwise : There are (i.e. I know) two methods, the flageolette method and the use of a electronic tuner. Flageolette : Pluck an open say deep E string and touch the string slightly over the 12h fret. You should hear E one octave higher. If the tone isn't clean you have to seek for the position where the tone is clean. Is it closer to the bridge the string is "too long", the bridge saddle should be moved towards the neck a little bit. Vice versa if the position is closer to the neck. Similar procedure if using a tuner. All (open) strings should be in tune (same with the above method). Then you pluck the referring string but now you press down fully at the 12th fret playing the octave. The tuner should show you wether the tone is proper or a little bit above or lower. If above the string is "too short", bridge saddle should be moved away from the neck. If lower vice versa.
Good luck Gerhard

Hi Gerhard Thanks for those tips and I'll try them out tomorrow. I have a feeling it's user error sometimes though and maybe I'm pressing too hard on the strings or leaning on the trem without realising it especially if a bit nervous. Best wishes Rosemary

Yeah!! Enjoyed that Rosemary.
I think you were a wee bit nervous with the camera on you, but I really enjoyed that. It's one of my favourite Shadows tunes along with Argentina.
You're doin' grand Rosemary.
Happy Christmas

Hi Rosemary, just a quicky, check that your 2nd string is not sticking in the nut slot, it may just need opening up a little, also try a spot of oil in the nut groove and also under the string tree to facilitate the string returning to normal after trem use or bending, any of these can give tuning probs on individual strings: keep bashing on Regards, Frank:

Hi Johnny and Frank Frank: Thanks for that. I'll check that too. Johnny: Thanks. I recorded that for practice shortly after I messed up the beginning at our November club meeting and made the same mistake with the timing again when the camera was on. I'll try recording it again soon to check the timing once more. The mistakes show up more with videos than I hear when playing sometimes so it's a good way of recognising problems Best wishes and a very happy Christmas Rosemary

Hi Rosemary, Well done! I did enjoy that rendition and also the tone from your Strat/Zoom G2.1nu/AC15 combo. That's one I've often thought about learning to play. Cavatina has a very nice set of chords. One small tip, if I may: your videos would look so much better if we occasionally saw a smile to camera Oh, just ignore me. Carry on as you are, you're doing fine. Regards, Mike

Well, I enjoyed that, Rosemary. Gerhard is right It is a sad love song and it helps to get your head into the 'feel' of the music.just watch ANY video of Hank playing it. He is in a world of his own. Those bends are good sounding and the Big bends will come in time. BTW - that timing error you mention. Its a pretty small one in my view but try and treat that second note as if it was no more than a 'hammer one's duration. Hope you had a good Christmas. Wishing you all the best for 2013.

Hi Ian Thanks for listening and for those tips and I'm glad you liked it. I have a bit of a mental block with the beginning since messing it up at a club meeting but am re-working it and will have another go in January - but will play it last instead of first when the nerves might have hopefully settled a bit Have a very happy New Year! Best wishes Rosemary
