Shadows E.P.s.....
Shadows To The Fore.......did Hank really have a red strat with his initials HBM in white on the upper bout?
The Shadows (the one with Mustang/Shotgun/TF Shane/TF Giant)...nice red jackets those. Just a publicity photo or did they ever wear them on stage?

Hi Jay, I've seen the pic before and I am convinced the letters on the Strat were not put there just for the pic. It was his first Strat #34346, the one Bruce has now. Which reminds me I got some similar letters for my first Strat, I think the letters were self adhesive. Pretty sure I applied them to the scratchplate though, because that Strat had a different shaped scratchplate to any other Strat I have ever seen, with an extended part going all the way up to the top horn and the word Fender etched out to the next layer so it appeared as black lettering on the white background on that top horn section. Regards, Charlie

....I'm confused here....I thought his first strat was the one that Cliff ordered which Bruce still has? (maple fingerbord).
So this 34346 strat (with dark fretboard) was Hank's and is now Bruces guitar. Why does he keep pinching Hank's guitars then?

...ok forget the dark fretboard. Are you saying that the maple strat in the pic is 34346 the first UK imported strat which Cliff bought and gave to Hank.? Who then stuck HBM on it and changed the gold hardware for silver? Do you know if there are any pics of Hank playing a show with HBM stuck on his guitar? jay

Hi Jay, Yes it's the first Strat. There was only one maple neck Strat used by Hank as far as I know during the 60s, and it was that one. No one ever told me who stuck the letters on. I seem to remember seeing them in a clip but I might be imagining it, it's over 50 years ago now. Either the gold had worn off or it just didn't come out in the photo. It often happens when gold is photographed. Regards, Charlie

Charlie: You are right, there IS a clip on you-tube, I have seen it showing quite clearly the HBM stickers: I am not sure, but I think it may be on one of their * Crackerjack* appearances I have also read that shortly after getting 34346, he went to a local hardware store and bought the self adhesive stickers and put them on himself: And yes, it had a maple fret board and all gold plated hardware:
Cheers, Frank:

If I remember rightly the letters were available individually in Woolworths for a few pennies each. You could see them all over the place spelling such illustrious words as "LADIES" and "GENTS" in restaurants and social clubs up and down the country.

I bought some and stuck them on my Hofner V3 at the time and that Marvin bloke nicked the idea off me!! lol ! ! ;D ;D ;D As we all had AC30s in the band we also used them to stick our initials on the back of each amp so that we knew who's was who's. cheers ian ps - when my parents stood "guarantor " for my 62 sunburst Strat I would have been killed if I had dared to put any stickers like that on it!! cheers ian

Hi Guys,
How weird you talking about initials on guitars, I'm sitting here looking at the small brass letters of my initials I stuck on my first electric guitar, circa 1960, a red Futurama with the three rocker pick up switches and single sided machine head. I (or my kindly parents!) chopped it in for a second hand Salmon Pink Strat about 1962. I had my name on the scratch plate of that, Woollies gold stick on letters I think, still got a photo of it. I came across the old brass letters some time ago and they've been on my desk ever since. The strange things we keep! Wish I still had both of those guitars though.
I had the Shadows To The Fore EP, Hanks Strat definitely had gold hardware and maple neck.
Cheers
John
