Hi all
Recently bought a couple of strats with rosewood boards. I have roughly half and half maple and RW, my only preference being how one or other looks on that particular guitar. This led to a conversation with a friend which I thought got a bit silly. He is a nice guy and I would be the first to say he is very knowledgable guitar wise, however he says he can tell the difference between maple and RW by the sound. My questioning of this led to him telling me of people who are able to tell the difference between such things as a one, two or three piece body. I found this a bit difficult to comprehend. I know there will be those who dissagree, some quite strongly, but how much difference can there realy be soundwise between a one, two or three piece body or maple and rosewood necks. Im sure there IS a difference but it is after all an electric guitar, metal strings stretched between either a nut and a metal bridge or a metal fret and metal bridge. Then there are the pick ups, supported not by the wood but by metal springs in a plastic pick guard. It all then passes through one of many electrical (or is that electronic) possibilities before being sent through a cable to any number of pedals or effects of one kind or another to any one of a vast choice of amps. I challenged him to pick RW from maple from my recordings and he declined saying there was to much outside influence on the sound. Wasnt that exactly what i had just said?
Id be interested to hear what people think. As i say, im sure there IS a difference but is it enough of a difference to say "that was played on a maple necked guitar with a 2 piece body" and if so, I will be very impressed ;D
Tin hat on....
regards
Ian
