Hi Charlie and Barry Thanks for your reply and info I watched Gerabriel and he sure sounds good but I am not sure if he is the same guy I saw before . In his video you could see his amp and aleses units I think there were two and he had the early hank sound ( man of mystery ) perfect >Its great to have this forum and site available I have felt isolated in Australia over the years being only able to talk to a few of my old mates about shadows stuff but the info I have picked up on is great . I only found out about the echo units with Charlies patches by stumbling onto the site cheers john44

Thinking about it, I don't think that Gerabriel is a member here. I cannot remember who else from France could have posted. Have a look through the sound files for versions of Man Of Mystery. Regards, Charlie

He has also been working for years to emulate as accuratly as possible Hank's lead guitar sound...

Hi Barry He sure sounds good , am I being sceptical about him and some others on u tube where the sound and and hand movement seem to be at odds with each other .Are people pre recording and just miming to their own sound Cheers john44

Hello John,
I'm sure the delay on YT is latency if that's the right word to use. I think most of the videos on there are genuine. On one of Gerabriel's videos you can hear him cough.
The was a big "discussion" on another forum about the sound/hand movement being un-coordinated where someone was more or less accused of miming but it was a genuine video.
Cheers Barry

Hi John44, I just saw the thread and am always interested to hear about other Aussie Shadows fans. There is a very active Shadows club over here in Perth with regular monthly get-togethers and other events throughout the year. If you should ever get the opportunity to come to Perth please let us know so that we can arrange something. We had the pleasure of a visit from Barry "Hoadlies" and his lovely wife a while ago (he commented above). Also, have you checked out the soundfiles on the TVS website www.tvsspecialtyproducts.com (go to the soundfiles and video page and click on the jukebox)? We are an Aussie enterprise trying to help those who want to get an authentic Shadows sound. Best Regards, Paul.

Hi Barry Its geat to be able to chat with other shadows fans , I started palying guitar at 18 which was fourty seven years ago so that makes me 65 in august .I was lucky to play in three bands here in brisbane The Breakaways, The defenders , and finally end most successfully The Diplomat Show band . I stopped performing when the family came along and I had to spend more time at the day job. My wife and I had our 40th annivesary last december and got some members of my old bands together to perform about twenty numbers we had about four rehearsels and could not beleive how good we went over and how good the sound was after thirty five plus years . We all asked the same question why did we stop, We have talked about doing it again but at this stage have done nothing I think we need another event to motivate us . What type of guitar do and gear do you have and do you play often chers john 44

Hi,
Len, there are indeed a large number of Shadows fans in Oz. I sold a 508 to one in Tassie a few years ago so I think we have all the states covered. Not sure about NT though??
John, Spiro organises the Perth Shadows club; I'll e-mail his contact details.
Charlie, I loved the sound of your Gretsch on the video posted on the Perth site a week ago, and well played too! One of my first memories of live rock music was a Melbourne band called The Thinderbirds and I was entranced at the sound of the wailing Gretsch that I could hear soaring above the band as I walked along the footpath to the Mailing Hall where thay played. I have wanted one ever since!
Regards,
Paul.

Hi Paul, I put the link to the video on this site as soon as I was told about it, and didn't know until then that the performance had even been recorded. I also didn't know it had been posted on the Perth site. You might be interested to read more details in the general section. The thread title has the name Rock Island Rebels. That Gretsch has a unique sound as I put an original DeArmond bridge pickup to replace the original reissue one that had gone open. I also have another Gretsch, a 6122-1959, which is a replica of Chet Atkins' main recording model, it is a lovely instrument, although I don't take it out to gigs. Regards, Charlie

Alan Alan if you click on the "Chicken" playing the purple guitar with the words Mon Matos, it's all there. It would appear that Gerard does not reply to anyone about the equipment he uses. Both Didier and Alain have tried on my behalf without success. Although he has two Q20s showing in his rack it was said he doesn't use EFTP, I'm sure Charlie can tell us if that's correct. In a recent post, Didier mentioned that if you click on the Ambiance De L' Original button, those are tunes with the original Shadows backing but Hank removed. Cheers Barry

Thanks Barry, here's where I get into trouble, and I have been playing for 50 years.
It's no wonder He dosen't comment on the equipment, the stuff pictured would NOT on it's own give the sound He say's He get's. Come on guy's,don't you think if He had a way of reproducing Hanks sound He would shout it from the rooftops? Even Hank can't recreate His own sound,so that tells us a lot, dosen't it.
This isn't a get at anyone thread,just seems a bit suspicious.Mmmmmmmmmm

Come on guy's,don't you think if He had a way of reproducing Hanks sound He would shout it from the rooftops? Alan Alan, I'd disagree with that. Gerard is a professional musician so I can fully understand why he keeps his settings to himself. It's probably taken him years of changing his setup to get what he was after. I'm not saying he's right in keeping it to himself but I can understand why. What would he get out of telling everyone? At a quick glance I'd guess the kit he uses is not in most people's budget anyway. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oJqFrVedB4&feature=channel_pageCheers Barry

Gege once posted a version of The Snowman on another site. I could tell immediately that he used my Complex program for it, when I mentioned it he said he had borrowed a Q2 (or Q20) with EFTP. I have been suspicious ever since, and he never purchased programs from me. I think that Gary Allen has got closer to the original Hank sounds, older and later. Regards, Charlie

Hi,
I seem to recall from an earlier site that he uses a Rocktron preamp, 2 q20's (one for echo, the second for equalisation) and a Line 6 rack mount Pod. After that I'm not sure but the video shows a Vox amp.

Hi John, You can change your 'gender' setting by clicking on 'profile' in the horizontal menu near the top of the home page, after you've logged in. Then 'modify profile' and change the gender setting in the drop down list of two options.
