Can anyone recommend a good way to clean a rosewood fretboard. A friend of mine has asked me to set up his strat. I have tried lemon oil but it does not clean it without a lot of effort. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Best regards,
Maurice.

Hi Maurice,
Lemon oil is not really for cleaning, it's a treatment to the rosewood to stop it from drying out too much (and look nice). Some very fine (grade 0000) wire wool can be used on both the frets and fretboard to remove the dirt. If it is heavily soiled, one method I have used pre wire wool is to take a very thin razor blade and hold it vertical and parallel to the frets to and gently scrape away from the fret, then proceed with the wire wool and finally (and sparingly) the lemon oil.
Kind regards,
Chris

Hi Maurice. I am in complete agreement with Chris, (grip) here. If you use lemon oil first, what you are doing is working any grime into the wood. Cheers, Graham

Hi Maurice, I don't have much advice to offer but if you watch this guy he is full of advice He's a bit opinionated but I think he's funny and his other videos are worth watching. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk4u7xm2N3gRegards Kevin

i use cellulose thinners to clean ,then lemon oil to finish. but be careful you don't get any on the lacquer that's on the guitar or paintwork

Hi Maurice,
For some time now I have been using 'GHS Gorgomyte Fret & Fingerboard Cloth' on Rosewood and lacquered Maple fretboards and it really does a great job. It's non abrasive and after cleaning the Rosewood board I treat it with Dunlop 65 Lemon oil. The Gorgomyte treatment is all that's needed on a Maple board - polishes up a treat, as do the frets. Google 'Gorgomyte' and you will find lots of favourable reviews and demos. It may seem a little expensive but each cloth lasts a long time as you only need to cut and use a two inch square each cleaning session.
For once a product really does live up to the hype.
Regards,
Mike

I have just cleaned my Rosewood board using D'Addario Planet Waves Lemon Oil
The description on the bottle say's
"A cleaner and conditioner formulated to remove dirt grease and wax build up from unfinished dark woods"
It brings mine up a treat.
Just thought i would comment.
