Today Win XP die's, no longer supported by Microsoft. One of the best O/S's IMHO. I bit the bullet and bought a full version of Win 8.1 and am just getting used to it's strange ways. so far all things musical have worked. It's the drudgery of spending in my case at least a couple of days getting things back to normal. I have three PC's now each with a different O/S (Win XP Pro, Win 7, Win 8.1) two laptops (Win XP Pro, & Win 7) It was going to be too risky using my workhorse XP machine for my banking and all other things that some criminal scrote would like to get hold of. so my latest PC is purely for music production and is Win 7, the old XP machine will be redundant as it cannot be upgraded to Win 8 (Thanks microsoft) My old music Win XP Pro PC is now the main household workhorse upgraded to Win 8.1. So any XP users out there you may have to bite the bullet to and speny many hours just keeping going what you already have Mike.

No longer supported by Microsoft, but still working ! I'll keep using Windows XP Pro SP3 on my main PC, I just made a full reinstallation with all existing updates (a lot of them). And I still have Windows 2000 working well on a secondary PC...

I shall keep my old PC and laptop that have XP on them until I need to change. The problem with keeping XP for anything that requires internet use such as banking/on-line purchasing etc, is that none of the Microsoft security features like Microsoft Security/Defender etc will not be updated. and of course any security loopholes will not be plugged anymore.
Win 8.1 only requires Defender and is part of the O/S.
Mike.
PS: Am writing this on my XP Laptop so no disasters yet........

Have you tried, after backing up everything, formating your xp drive, running your win7 installation disk. when it asks for the code, there is an option to enter it later. Take that option unchecking the auto activate box. When it has finished installing win 7, put your win 8 upgrade disc in and run the setup option. The win 7 disc is never checked by Microsoft, so you can keep using it on your other machine. You just activate the new win 8 installation.
I have used this method several times with success.
Good luck, Duncan.

Hi Mike, Similar situation here...I've tried Mac on a Macbook pro and couldn't get on with it very well (too much learning for a lazy old git), I felt the need to have windows on it too, so I've made the Macbook dual boot which makes space a little on the tight side for adding a lot of my music software with it's many gigbytes of samples. Having done that and found it an OK system (so far) I've since added another large HD and made my PC a dual boot system with win 8.1, and my existing XP as a reserve for anything that won't run in Win 8.1, I found it annoying that I had to buy 2 x win 8.1 Kind regards, Chris

MS Win XP Pro is dead....long live Win XP Pro
As far as I am concerned the fact that MS is providing no more support for XP only means that there will be no more annoying "urgent" messages to go & load all kinds of updates that are usually not applicable to me the rest are covered by my security programmes anyway.
I use a stripped down version of XP for music stuff with no internet access, not needed as I can download whatever I need on a laptop & send stuff to the XP machine already security vetted.
Not Interested in Win8 until I get a touch screen monitor.
If it 'aint broke , no need to fix it.
I don't play games on a PC/Laptop so need for the latest technology. (XP Pro64 with 8gig ram is still a fast system even by today's standards)
Cheers
Dick.

I have two pc's, a XP and a 64bit Vista, I use this for Photoshop for my work but also for internet access and emails.
I have a Mac Pro 10.4.1, now if I wanted to upgrade from BFD2 to BFD3 for example, I would need to upgrade to 10.6, the only thing about that is, my Logic 7 won't work and probably Garritan JABB and PO

And I still have Windows 2000 working well on a secondary PC... Didier Hi Didier, Well said! I think far too much is being made of the dangers of not updating to 8.1 (ugh, shivers!). Seems to me that XP remains pretty secure as long as you have an active Firewall and a decent antivirus product installed - support for XP is likely to continue for another 2 or 3 years - and you scan your system regularly for any nasties that might have crept on board with a product like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Sure, all the computer magazines want you to update so they will do their very best to scare you into jumping ship. However, it's in their interests as their bread and butter depends on there being as many users as possible using Windows7 or 8/8.1. Despite what Microsoft would have you believe, Windows7 has been far more successful than 8.0/8.1 will ever be and Microsoft shot themselves in the foot with the success of XP. I have 2 laptops running Windows7. Also a desktop still running XP and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. All have Internet access. In the end, your level of security depends largely on your browsing behaviour. Keep away from suspect sites, don't open attachments unless from a trusted source and generally remain vigilant while on the Net. But then, 'twas ever thus; nothing has really changed in that respect. Many, if not all, modern anti-viral products should block any attempts to access known dubious websites. You can override, of course, but such folly will reap what you deserve. Regards, Mike

Mike, I dont know where that comes from.
Duncan, As I said in the OP I have the full version of Win 8.1 not the upgrade. Also my workhorse PC can not use Win 8 as the processor is not suitable, (3ghz ) a mystery that is.
Chris, I have never liked the Mac way of doing things so am a confirmed Windows user. As for lack of storage, I utilise lots of external USB HDD's upto 2 tb.
I am leaving my old XP PC and XP laptop as is just in case I need it but am slowly getting to grips with Win 8.
Dick, I am definitely not a fan of "touch screens" for PC's. OK with small portable devices like my aviation GPS units I have. Your right about XP if not on the internet, if it stays virus free there is no problem, I wont use XP for internet banking or any on-line purchases anymore as Win 8.1 is more "secure".
I had to stop using my XP Pro machine for music as I was unable to utilise more than 3 gb of ram. I now have a new IBM Business machine that I was lucky to get with Win 7 installed (You are unlikely to find any new machines apart from the well known auction site with 7 on) which also has Win 8 pre-installed on another partition for when needed.
I liked XP and if the ram limitation was not there would have continued to use it for music until it broke....
Mike.

Hi Mike No problems with XP addressing ram, up 128gb in 64bit XP Some people say XP64 is problematic but I've never found that. The only problem is finding a mobo that can handle more than 16gb of ram, though there are plenty of 8gb mobo's & of course there are only s/hand ones around these days More info here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP_Professional_x64_Edition Have you looked at the "bare bones" systems from places like Ebuyer, modern tower's that ship without operating systems installed ? Cheers Dick.

Mike, I dont know where that comes from. Hi Mike, Sorry, perhaps I could have expressed that better. I was referring to Antivirus product support for XP continuing for a few more years. I think you will find that this applies also to many other security products out there. Can't say whether Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender are included, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Microsoft have decided to pull the rug. Ah well, such punitive and short-sighted business decisions are fairly typical of this behemoth. After all, where Microsoft are concerned, it's just business. Do they really care about the interests of their paying customers? Somehow I doubt it. Regards, Mike

Some people say XP64 is problematic but I've never found that. I was tempted to install Windows XP 64 (which is based on Windows Server 2003), as my main desktop PC uses an AMD Athlon 64 processor, but I have heard there might be compatibility problems with many 32 bits softwares, so I didn't install it although I have the installation disc. Hi Mike, I thought it might be of help to others who have win 7 and want to put win 8 on another computer. You can use your win 7 disk to get win 8 installed. Duncan.

That is from M/Soft's website. Funn,y my XP machine has just been updated automatically.
I suspect there is some "Buffering" happening with updates that were produced before 8/4/14 that will eventually just stop?
Mike.

I could be wrong but while it is certain there will be no more new updates, I have a suspicion that the updates that were available will be there for a while, maybe even good enough to enable a re-install of XP with all the updates included. Regards, Charlie

I installed windows XP pro (SP2) on a friends computer today and was easily able to find and download SP3 and all the most recent fixes to bring it up to date. I will continue using my XP pc for a long time to come. Im sure the time will come when i have no choice but to upgrade but until that time comes, this will do just fine

I don't think the immediate problem is going to be getting all the previous updates, it would seem as though it won't be supported for further security updates to the OS.
I also wonder how security will be dealt with by third parties, particularly with all the on-line transactions that take place?
Regards
Gary
