Hi Charlie, I was wondering about the normal channel on the AC30 if they've messed with it over the years? Early on, it only had a normal and vibrato channel, and Hank used the normal on, which was flat I believe? The current AC30, there is no difference between the top boost and normal to my ear, except a slight bit more gain an the treble and bass control. As I mentioned, my AC30s normal channel has a lot of bass, and is really only good for jazz, I think that's what Brian May plugged his treble booster into? That's why I was wondering if they've changed it? That magazine article I told you about that showed how to get a Hank tone on the normal channel would certainly do it, but not on mine. The amp they used was a 6 imput, not sure what year? Matthew

I remember buying an AC30 super twin (Not top cut) in 1965, it had no top to it at all and I had to use a treble booster.

I remember reading somewhere that Hank didnt like the tonal qualiutiues of the AC30/6 so they used AC30/4's and treble boosted them. Hank never told me this (lol) before I bought MY AC30/6 in 1963 (?) so I carried on for 12 years playing Shads material and getting a wonderful sound!! I also used a Watkins Copikat "lunch box" and then a second hand Binson Echorec which, WHEN it worked gave great sounding echoes. The Copikat became the Band's "spare" and got sold for £20 in 1976!!

The early (1960 or thereabouts) 4 input model used an EF86 valve in the normal channel. This was later changed for an ECC83 input stage when the 6 input versions were introduced, as the EF86 exhibited (and still does!) microphony problems. Does the 4 input model in question have an EF86 and if so is that the normal channel? I wouldn't expect the EF86 input to be too bassy unless there is a problem somewhere in the circuit. The early EF86 circuits also had a brilliant switch. A change of capacitor value may well enable you to obtain a better treble response.

Hi Matthew, I really don't know how the normal channel has varied on every version of the AC30. I think they all probably had a bit too much bass. I remember my 1964 AC30T (treble version that had a simple treble boost circuit on all 3 channels) normal channel being too bassy and the brilliant channel sounding too thin. I couldn't wait until I could afford to change it for something I liked better. Regards, Charlie

From a brief look at the CC diagrams the Top Boost and Normal channels have basicly the original preamp circuits (post EF86 period), with much less bass roll off in the N-channel. However the CC's departs from original circuit by offering two modes on the N-channel. In the Brilliance mode the N-channel voicing is closer to that of the TB-channel, (probably attempting to mimic the AC30/4-EF86 Brilliance response). In addition TB and N-channel can be linked.
My schems shows the AC30CC has the original valve rectification too, with a GZ34 valve - not solid state.

That was the first CC that came out in 2005 I think? which I have the brilliance switch turns the normal channel into a treble AC30, yes it does have a valve rectifier, they updated it in 2010 I think (I like this one better)Version 2 here www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANm2t6oqPPcMatthew

I have not seen any diagram of the AC30 Classic yet. Erik
