Someone posted a thread recently mentioning that there were a couple of Q2s on the well known auction site, but as usual I can't find the post.
It may be a good thing to check with the sellers before bidding and ask which software version the Q2s are. I know one is a very early version and may not work well with Charlie's EFTP programmes.
Cheers Barry

Barry,I was looking at the Q2's on the well known auction site, and you are correct that one of them had the 1.02 software version which is no good for Charlies patches.
The second Q2 was bought as a Buy It Now,and has gone,I have no idea what software was on that.
I must add that I didn't bid on either.

HI ALL the Q2's are great & you can just change the chip if it happen's to not have version V.2.01... there is a member of this site who can supply the v.201 chip as I procured one from him ,but it may be easier to get one copied in the Uk as paul lives in W-australia... The Q2 with charlies 79-09 email-patches is in my opinion a bit more vintage sounding than my magic stomp , don't get me wrong the stomp is very good especially for the money & cost of patch-set...,but the Q2 is a ''magic'' unit.... I fell the main thing to be concerned about when buying a Q20-Q2,, is those battery eating chips that charlie has warned about ,most Q2's seem to have had modification's to the board's as there are some mod's described in the service manual that charlie can supply a copy off and or sheendig's can supply also? ,charlie could explain this in more detail ,but I don't see many if any complaint's on this problem ,the unit's work ok but back-up batt has a short life!!!! IT would not stop me buying one ,after using the one I have......,ON some older unit's there can sometimes will be a small dark spot on the readout but it's not a worry as it does not affect the opperation!!! AS for newer unit's there's alway's the ''TVS3'' at $4.000, OZ'' a believe me a super bit of gear ,as I have had a demo from the builder-developer of it..in person at his home & in a gig-situation .. BUT there will alway's be something new come on the scene ,,I happen to know something's in the wind ,but how far away I am not sure!!!!!!!! CHEERS ALL .............barry...

Hi Barry, The earliest Q2s have a problem when upgraded to version 2.01. There is a reset circuit that has to be modified. Paul compared a later Q2 with an early one that was losing programs or programs becoming corrupted and found the difference in the reset circuit and modified it. As far as I know that cured it. The service manual mentions the mod but in poor detail, and diagrams are missing. The bad memory chips are by Winbond. The battery life with those fitted is about 1 year. When programs are not loaded the spec is within what Alesis considered to be OK, then they later discovered that when programs were loaded, the battery current went up a lot. Since I knew about the problem, which was very early in my time of programming them, I wouldn't program a unit that had them fitted until they had been changed for different chips. When we were supplying new Q2s Alesis agreed to modify those that had them fitted under retrospective warranty. I think most if not all Q2s have official Alesis board modifications. Regards, Charlie

THANK'S charlie I could not think of the ''winbond'' ,but until you remove the rear-cover you cannot tell & of course they are not in socket's!!!!!! , but in my case my 2x Q2's are ok & have also been board modified & they both work well with the new larger capacity batteries fitted [probably see me out] THE holy one as I call it [from a church in ''gracelands''] has your 79-09 ''magic-patch-set installed & the other has ''echotapper'' patches & ditto with the 2x m/stomps,but I may consider selling the 2x spare's 1xQ2& 1xm/stomp? as I don't think I will wear the main two out as I only fiddle around at home.. Getting back to the Q2's I am sure you are right about mostly all Q2's have been modded by now.. as we don't seem to hear of difficulties with them it seem's mostly batt-replacement [not costly] and a pot & or jack socket's require cleaning!!!! otherwise they seem very reliable!!! I had to buy a 240v-115v stepdown trans as both my Q2's are ''US-115v-plug-pack's my old quad - plug-pack work's fine in a Q2 which is 240v ,but in anycase they are 9volt ''AC'' out & it would not be hard to replace with 240v plug-pack of the right current-output.. Charlie ''john'' from ''SA'' who has just acquired your patches for his Q20 tell's me it is compatible with both voltages with no switching? ,he lives about 200k's north of me... CHEERS charlie & all...............barry..

Hi Barry, The Q20 has a built in switch mode power supply and can run on any AC mains voltage in the world without adjustment. It just requires the correct plug on the mains cable. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie,
The mod to the reset circuit did solve the loss of memory problem on the Rev A Q2 with the 2.01 ROM. I suggest that it be made to any Rev A board that has the upgraded ROM.
Regards,
Paul.

Hi Paul, Thanks for letting us know that the mod did cure that Q2. If I remember rightly the service manual mentions that the mod should be done to revision C boards as well (revision B is not mentioned so I don't know if that exists). Regards, Charlie
