I have just seen a Fender Hank Marvin Mexican guitar on the well known auction site £729. Is there such a model? It has silver hardware and looks like a Mexican Standard to me. thanks Steve

Hi Steve, I think there was one but I don't think they were very expensive. Someone here might remember. £729 sounds too high to me but maybe I am wrong. There should be a signature on the guitar somewhere, probably on the headstock. Some people have made forgeries but I'm not saying this one necessarily is. I have no idea what a genuine one would sound like. Regards, Charlie

Hi Steve
There was indeed a Mexican HBM Signature Strat and, as Charlie says, the signature is on the headstock. I don't know too much about them as regards the spec but I believe they are quite well thought of, although not as much as the Japanese HBM Signatures which, I think, came out around the same time (about 10 years ago).
They do crop up on the well known auction site from time to time but £729 is definitely too much. £400/500 would probably be nearer the mark. The Japanese models tend to go for around £500/600+
I bought a Japanese Signature a few years ago and the shop had a Mexican one in stock as well so I was able to try them both. The Mex was a nice guitar but I preferred and bought the Jap.
Cheers.
Tony

I think that guitar is being sold by a music shop dealer and is very much at the top of the price range. Lop a couple of hundred off and you have a better idea. There was indeed a Mexican made HBM guitar which came after the Japanese models I believe. They are not bad but the Fiesta Red Classic is just as good. Off the budget HBM Strats, the Japanese ones are the best although the jury is still out on who did the best shade of Fiesta Red.

I owned both. The Japanese is from 1996. I still have that one. The Mexican was fallen and rather demised. I sold it recently for 300 pounds, so in good condition 400 - 450 would be acceptable.
I can't say which one was better, the Mex had bigger frets but the necks were similar. Finishing was fine on both.
I recently bought a Mexican Fiesta Red and that is actually the best for me. The neck has a more soft V shape with medium jumbo's. The price is very reasonable. In your country for about 450 pounds.

If it is the mexican then it should have the HM signature on the headstock. £700 is over the top. I have one of these and with the Newtone stings that Barry aquired and its as good as the Jap's.
