Hi Clive, I did suggest some settings to one member here but I don't remember what they were. He might post what he has if he sees your message. Bear in mind that while such settings are a good starting point, individual tastes and different tunes might require some further adjustments. Generally you want more bass for modern Hank sounds, and less bass for older sounds. In a lot of cases, the treble and middle settings do not vary so much but there are exceptions. Regards, Charlie

Hi Clive,
Just in case the member Charlie mentioned does not see this thread, PM me (I need your email address) and I will send you the settings that were passed along to me. I'm sure he won't mind!!
They are general settings for the AC15 and AC30 and can be tweaked a bit if needed.
Regards,
Ray

Mornin' Charlie, I hope you are well. Yes, the vol on my Strat is set high. I've done some multimeter tests for John which has ascertained that there is no problem with the electrics. He has sent me a sample of the sound that I should expect and has told me that there is no reason why I should'nt be getting the correct sound and to fiddle with amp settings. Last night I took the guitar to bits (yet again!!!) and took all wires out, cleaned up all solder and resoldered wires. Then I spent hours trying different settings with the amp (and M/stomp) with no great success. To be honest, I gave up in the end. I find it difficult to explain, but the sound I seem to be missing is that sort of 'ping' sound at the higher end that everyone seems to be getting with similar gear to mine, whereas I still seem to be getting a rather thin, icy sound. I seem to be knocking my head against a brick wall with this. Should I be replacing any of my gear to give me what I want? If I started over again, what in your expert opinion should I have bought? Any additional help would be appreciated.
Incidentally Charlie, how do I see if there are messages posted for me without having to scroll through pages?
Best rgds - Clive

Hi Clive, I'm fine apart from trying to get my band's CD finished. I'm now at the stage where I am replacing some guitar parts on 3 or 4 tracks, everything else is almost done. How far are you from Cambridgeshire? You would be welcome to bring your gear here for me to look at, I'd soon find what the problem is. Has your guitar been set up by a knowledgable person since you bought it? There would be only an instant indication of any private messages to you near the top of the home page. All thread messages that you haven't read should show as "new" after you have selected a forum to look at the thread titles. Regards, Charlie

Unfortunately, I'm not down the road - I am in Grimsby (edge of the world!!!) otherwise I would of have certainly jumped at the chance of coming to see you. However, if all else fails, I will maybe make a special trip to your neck of the woods to meet you (maybe a couple of hours or so to the North of Cambs?). No, the guitar has not been set up by a knowledgable person but having listened to you I am going to go into a small, local music shop and have a chat to the owner who I am told is tip top with set ups. I'll let you know what he has to say. Rgds - Clive

Sorry Charlie, but I meant to say that I think the main thing I'm lacking in sound is that sort of 'ping' sound at the high end, whereas I seem to be getting a thin, icy sound. C

<snip> Incidentally Charlie, how do I see if there are messages posted for me without having to scroll through pages? Best rgds - Clive Hi Clive, As far as I know we do not have a facility to notify individuals of messages posted. Apart from what Charlie said, the only other thing you can do is click 'bookmark' at the top of each thread that you are interested in. Then when you want to see what has been posted, you click on 'profile' at the top of a page and then 'bookmarks' and those you are interested in will be listed.

Hi Clive, One reason for a thin sound could be thin tremolo springs, although I have not heard of Mexican Strat with thin springs. Might be worth asking the person to look at them. If they are thin ones, have them changed to full full thickness ones. The tremolo adjusting claw will need to be adjusted afterwards to suit the increased tension. Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, I took my Strat to the person earlier today. He says he is going to completely reset everything including the intonation, afterwhich he has invited me to his home where he says that he will play my guitar through his equipment. Apparently he is a professional musician and his band plays Shadows songs - so hopefully he should know what he is talking about and understand what I'm after. I will mention the thickness of the tremelo springs to him. I will certainly let you know the outcome as I will John C. as I promised. Best rgds - Clive

Message to John Collins and John Manley in Aus. - As promised my friends, I'm letting you know the outcome of my visit to Charlie's place last night. I can't tell you how grateful I am to him for giving me his time and expertise to sort out my problems. He set my guitar up completely and ran through the settings on my V/tronic with me. The outcome is that I now have a sound that can and should be expected with my gear. When I get a minute, I'll record something and send it over for your comment. Thanks for your past assistance and help in this guys. RGDS - Clive

Hi Clive.
Really happy that you have things sorted at last and a huge thanks to Charlie for his time in looking into the settings and adjustments. Small niggardly problems that are easily missed until you have a real expert who knows exactly what to look for. You know Clive, it really puts to shame some of these guys that run guitar shops these days and charge like wounded bulls for nothing.
Now head down to KFC for some chicken fat and get those fingers greased up for some lightning fret work ;D True story, as I read somewhere a famous bass player chowing down on fried chicken before a performance.
Now get playing. John M
