I've been offered an '82 Japanese Strat for £600 which I'm told is worth much more. Can someone tell me if this is a fair price or is over the top? I understand these guits are collectable and appreciate in value. Advice would be appreciated from those who know. Rgds - Clive

They sold new for around £229 at the time, I think £600 might not be too far out now it it's a good example. Regards, Charlie

Clive Has it got 'JV' on the heel plate, if so then it is very collectable, but haggle on price and don't mention its collectable.

Hi guys, I've now had a look at the Jap strat. Yes, Peter, it has 'JV' with ref number on the chrome plate at the top of the body on the back of the guitar (so is it collectable???) is there anything else that I should look for?. The state of it is absolutely disgusting - one or two nicks, but nothing serious; the tuning pegs are rusty; the poles on the p/ups are pitted with rust; the tremolo and bridge also badly pitted with rust. Appears that maybe all metalwork needs replacing, although I don't know at what sort of cost. The guy is asking £600 - I've told him that he must be joking, not worth any where near. Your further thoughts would be appreciated.
Rgds - Clive

Clive Google "Pete's Rare Guitars" and check his JV prices. Sit down you do it and have a glass of good malt by your side. Regards John

Hi John my friend, have you got your bags packed yet for N/ville? B/hell, mate - what prices!!! Do you reckon that this guit. is worth trying to 'steal' ? How do I find out if '82 is correct? maybe I should email the serial number over to Pete's R/Guitars and ask them eh? Should the replacement metal parts be genuine Jap and would it affect the value? What do you think. Is it still a cold winter in Aus? - give my regards to John C when you next talk to him. Rgds - Clive

Clive If you take the neck off, there may be a date pencilled in on the heel end of the neck near the truss rod hole. This does not always denote the manufacturing date of the whole guitar as the necks were often made in batches which were possibly a different date to the bodies. Some times a date can be found in one of the body cavities but on Jap Strats this was rare to find. However, the dates will not me more than a few months apart.
One problem that the early Jap Strats had was the varnish on the maple finger board was not very wear resistant and would wear through quite quickly down to the wood. Some times 'troughs' would then be worn in the wood.
There is a web site in the USA run by John Hornbacher who specialises in dating and identifying all Jap Strats. The JV or Japanese Vintage series are extremely collectable but condition must be reflected in the price.

Clive, I know someone who bought a 1983, 62 JV strat on the well known auction site for just over £600-00. It's in very good condition with very little wear on the frets and came with a hard case. Many of these JV's are on the well known auction site for around £1000-00 but they haven't been selling for that price. For one in the condition you describe I wouldn't even consider buying it when you have a choice of new strats can buy for a similar price. For more info on JV strats take a look at www.21frets.com where you will find all the information you need. Barry

Hi Clive.
Not quite packed yet but time moves fast these days, Nov is not far away. Have to sort out some winter clothes as what I have are very light and heading north in the US, Ohio, Illinois from Nashville I figure I'll need some, going on past experiences. I have a very good friend here in Brisbane who deals in Japanese Fenders and I'll pick his brain today. Pity you can't get a photo of it. Looking around, I near needed a good stiff malt myself looking at the prices of what some are asking for the JV models As for JC, he and his wife are shuffling around SE Asia at the moment. Regards John

Clive.
Talked to my mate today who imports Japanese models. I gave him your description of the guitar and he thinks 600 is a bit high and see if you can talk the seller down some. If you get it don't change anything, just clean it up best you can within reason, as the value of these models go up each year. (As we have found out) Best I can do for you at this stage, your call mate! Regards John

hi clive if its a export model the price is about right. it will have an ex stamped on theneck body cavity. without that they arnt so sort after but are still nice guitars. the prices at the moment are down even on export models. and i would say at this moment in the condition you say its in the price is top end. but they will go up again so it is an investment as well as a nice guitar but if you start to replace original parts its value will alter downwards. i have owned 3 and still have one and i think they are good. is it a squier jv or just a fender jv they are the best ones. but without the ex mark not worth as much. peter

Thanks, my friend. Do you mean the cavity behind the 'pick guard' on the front, maybe below the p/ups? The parts will have to be replaced as really badly pitted with rust. I am going to take photos and attempt to place them on this thread - then I'd appreciate further comment. If I replaced with genuine Jap parts would it decrease in value? The guy is sticking his heels in at £600 and says it is an original not a re-issue. Rgds - Clive

sorry that should say neck body cavity. if you replace parts you will problay have a better looking and maybe better sounding guitar, but it does tend to devalue them. if you do replace parts keep the old parts in case you resale and that will help a lot reguards value. peter
