He died in 1970 - the large headstock was first in 1966 discontinued and revived in 1974. I think the model they have reinvented is the 1968. Cheers Norm

Cheers Norm Sorry, that is completely wrong (except the year of death which is correct). I remember seeing the larger headstock on new Strats in guitar shop windows in London from around 1966 onwards, and they were made like that through the 70s and beyond, except that Fender also changed to the 3 bolt and adjustable tilt neck in the early 70s. I don't think smaller headstocks appeared again until around 1981. I believe Hendrix did play at least one small headstock Strat in his early days in the UK, then he seemed to favour brand new ones, all of course with the larger headstock that he is associated with. Regards, Charlie

Hi Norm,
Charlie's right... I've handles multiple samples of strats from 66 till 82 and they had all the large headstock. Furthermore I have a 1970 maple neck strat(the same as Hanks black one) and guess what...Hanks and mine have a large headstock. Cheers Rob

Sorry guys you are right, I was looking at a picture of a 68 strat headstock a while ago which included headstocks between 64 and 74 and seemed to remember some are smaller. I revisited the site just now and its the way the photos are taken that gives the impression of different sizes. Google 68 strat large headstock and check the photo of the 64 to 74 headstocks. Cheers Norm
