I guess another advantage of your new pedal would be reliability, my amp tech told me EF86 valves are very unreliable, I guess thats why Vox went to 12AX7 ? Matthew

Hi Dave and Morris, Thanks, I have added you to the list.
Hi Matthew, That's the story I heard too, that Vox had too many problems with the EF86 even in the 60s. One of the reasons I think the pedal could be popular.

Hi Charlie,
Please add my name to the list too.
(I assume it will be OK at 110 volt with a suitable adapter)

Hi Charlie,
I'm afraid I am a little late joining the party, but now that I've caught up I realise that owning this unit has to be another no brainer. So, please add my name to the growing list of eager prospective purchasers of your latest intriguing and ground breaking creation.
Thank you. Regards, Mike

Hi Mike, Hall Effect is something I had thought of many years ago, but decided against using it. Let's not turn this into a repeat of the scenario where everyone was trying to think of names for the Hall & Collins Signature Echo! Regards, Charlie

G'day Charlie,
Long time - no speak. Still over-the-moon with my H&C echo unit. I've followed this thread with great interest as I just adore the sound of the EF86 style of pentode pre-amp valve. If that tone / behaviour can indeed be closely emulated in solid state (or similar tech') then it's a winner IMO. I've had the Korg/VOX AC30 HH head for some time. I've swapped the EF86 for the longer-bottle E80F (the NOS Philips SQ version is a 10,000 hour valve which sounds as good and will not go microphonic- unless you play tennis with it!). However, a solid-state equivalent would be ideal for the banks and bumps of gigging. Might I suggest naming this beast the "Pentode Pre" or some such?
Meanwhile, I'm very interested in getting one of these units when available. So, I'd appreciate it if you would place my name on the list as well, please Charlie.
Best Regards, Dick Busser Maleny OZ

Hi Dick, Thank you, and glad to know you are pleased with your H&C unit. We have very similar tonal qualities to the original sounds. Next is to get someone I have in mind to play test it and compare it with the real EF86 circuit in his own amp. We already established that all the Mullard EF86 valves we had available sounded the same and the circuit voltages were all the same. From that we deduced that the EF86 valves we had were good and sounding correct. All other versions of EF86 valves that we tried didn't sound the same. So we should at least be able to determine whether or not the circuit 3 side of the preamp will sound as good. As for the circuit 2 side, if it gives a convincing Apache sound then it should be job done! We already know that the oscilloscope traces differ for the 2 different EF86 circuits and the preamp is matching those traces very well. I have added you to the list. Regards, Charlie

Regards, Charlie Hi Charlie, Yes, I had my doubts about that as well. However, " Project EF86" may still have some merit and would be in keeping with your thoughts about "project the sound". In this instance turning around "EF86 Project" to "Project EF86" would imply both the project itself and also the projection of the EF86 sound. Regards, Mike 😀

Ill be interested to hear this and what difference it makes. There has been a lot of speculation about the EF86 being as much a contributing factor to "that sound" as the Meazzi echo machine etc. Look forward to hearing more.

Hi Steve, I will be going to the factory again on Monday. A player known here is going with me so we can compare the sound with one of his EF86 amps. Will report on the results after then! Regards, Charlie

Hi Charlie, I have to say, I use an EF86 channel in my English AC30 and for the older numbers, Apache, Frightened city, Wonderful land etc, its absolutely fabulous, so its a great project you have in the making here Charlie. I had a good look at your (Raggy tramline) video's, excellent 'but' was surprised to see you were using a Peavey Amplifier? Pete A L

Hi Pete, Although I don't own a Vox amp (apart from the little plastic AC1 that I used to record Happy Birthday) I borrowed the Peavey from Istvan so I didn't need to take an amp with me. It seemed the best sounding amp out of the choices offered for the type of sound I was going for at the time. I still wished I could have had an EF86 type of sound some of the time for those gigs though. The earlier AC15 amp (circuit 2) that Hank used for Apache has a different sound and harmonic structure to the later AC15 that has the brilliance switch. My preamp is designed to produce both sounds. Regards, Charlie
