Who set up the patterns on the various early echo units that hank used in the 60’s ? Was it a studio tech or did hank dictate the pattern he wanted for each tune

I would think that Hank set his own patterns up but there would also have been comments and suggestions from the engineers regarding volume etc.

The patterns were almost certainly simply of the stock echo units used at the time, although it is possible that Dick Denney modified the head spacings of the first echo unit Hank used. I was told by Dick that he often had to go along to the studio to reset some of the internal preset settings as they had been messed up, which indicates there was possibly some fiddling going on with the internal settings that would normally be left alone by other players. I think the echo patterns dictated the tempo and rhythms of many tunes and not the other way round. Frightened City is a very good example. The ending repeats of The Savage is another. I do not think the studio technicians would have had any input as to the echo sound, apart from possibly the amount of echo, as also mentioned by Phil. Regards, Charlie

When I saw the Shadows at the Paris Olympia in 1961, Hank never touched his echo box and amp during the whole concert to change settings, and for me it was perfect !

A live situation is a bit different as a generic (fit for all) echo was generaly used, saves a lot of time and the risk of something going wrong!

Didier Hi Didier, Hank almost certainly used the Echomatic 2 at that time. The live Kingston show used the same echo. It really only had one sound but what a sound! Regards, Charlie
