I am using Bandlab..the free version. The only thing that is a little bit touchy is, when you do not have a good sound card. There is the 'virtual' synth (Cakewalk TTS1) that one has to use so as to be able to work with Bandlab If you do not have a good sound card. Anyway there is the Microsoft GS wavetable synth that can be used if you do not have a good synth on your sound card. (But from what I have read the Microsoft Synth, is 21 years old... www.gearnews.com/virtualmidisynth-windows-midi-synth-doesnt-suck/ !!!) There are several tuition on Bandlab on Youtube. It is very interesting to know all the tricks. Anyway have fun Sheendigs

Hi Charlie, Might be worth adding that Cakewalk by Bandlab is only available for 64 bit Windows OS.
Otherwise it's an amazing offer.
Cheers George

It gets better! I am told there is another good free DAW called Ardour, and it will work on both PCs and Macs so it looks like it could be very interesting especially for those who run a Mac. www.ardour.org/features.htmlRegards, Charlie

Hi,
As I read it, Ardour is only real freeware if you download the source programs and compile it on your own - a rather tedious process if you haven't done so before.
The ready to run program is not free, but if you want it free of charge, it periodically goes silent after 10 minutes. If you can live with that, it's free.

Another free DAW is Tracktion www.tracktion.com/products/t7-dawPersonally I couldn't get on with the interface Ed Edit : I used Reaper before I purchased it. It is not that expensive. Loved the simple UI. The demo is fully functional and you can save and render your productions etc - no limits. I tested it way way past the demo expiry date.

Regards, Charlie When I mentioned "Ardour" to Charlie I was sure that I had seen that it ran on both a Mac and a PC, I began to doubt myself after I read the above and came up with the same information, but I have done some further checks and it seems there is a ready to run Windows and Mac version without the need for further source code (it's on the left hand side of download - second link)! ardour.orgcommunity.ardour.org/downloadRegards Gary

Hi,
Yes, but if you select to download either the OsX or Windows 64 bit ready to run version you end up with a requests for payment. At least this is where I end up.

Hi Soren
I gave the information to Charlie in good faith, I have never tried to download it as I already have the Mac version of Ardour as part of Mixbus.
I did have a look at the down load page and went as far as the link where they say I want it and saw nothing, it doesn't show up as either subscription or being some sort of weird voluntary scheme of less than $45.00 until you actually try to download it!
Thank you for bringing this to peoples attention, it seems you can get the current version plus any updates for whatever you want to contribute below $45.00, which I assume could be a minimal amount.
My apologies as it seems it's not 100% free!
Best regards
Gary
