hello there i was wondering if any of Charlie's members could point me in the right direction
all advice to approach the sound would greatfully accepted ,regarding the shadows recording of... SHAZAM ( the original track ). I have over the years tried many times to record it, but saddly it always sounds way off the mark , infact c**p to my ears, so , i thought i could revisit it and try again. Any advice on settings , guitar anything really ( was it a burns ? ) just so i can put it to bed, its been really niggling me for many a year
thanks so much
regards

Hi Les, Try the neck pickup, and not too much mids on the amp. Also avoid the common mistake of using too much treble, especially when recording. Regards, Charlie

many thanks Charlie, and also George for your reply with regards to gear, my recording chain is fender strat > marshall jmp-1 ( Programmed clean ) >into either a Q20 or TC major or rocktron intellefex > into a Mackie desk > focusrite pro 40> Cubase elements 10. And yes Charlie, I did look at the Q20booklet with your eftp and noted that the shaza prog was 00-0 and neck pu selected anyway its onward and upwards for another crack at it....I did however look at youtube re shads guitar selection ( think it was paul Rossiter and there is a suggestion that hank could well have used the burns for the recording
cheers guys..always good to check Charlie and friends knowledge base
regards les ps just realised I should have mentioned , the jmp-1 is rack mounted and therefore everything is DI'd into my computer ( once the guitar string is plucked the signal does not see the light of day until it arrives at the computer )...………..I do have a vox ac-15 and have mic'd it up previously but unfortunatly there are too many outside noises getting picked up by the mic and ruining the recording further

Here´s my recording of Shazam made a couple of years ago without any amp, no pedals just the Fender strat (with flatwounds!) direct into the PC. Of course all the effects are as plugins in the PC via the free VSPack from Christian Boileau. See more on the video info on YouTube (if you open up this video on YouTube).

Les,
Shazam on a Burns isn't really a possibility, because Hank told me, they discussed the Burns guitars with Jim Burns late middle or at the end of the summer in 1963 while they did shows in Blackpool. They got the guitars at the end of 63 or in the beginning of 64... they had a prototype but not that close to the summer... Hanks was really annoyed by all those comments on the websites by the anoraks, who in reality weren't present at that time in the studio or on the road. His face becomes harsh on the Gretsch and Apache and other older hits stories...because between the lines, he and the shads were almost called liars because someone with some gear got a similar result....
Cheers Rob
