hello from chazbear this is my first post on this magic forum...reading through various posts i noticed that ironstone pickups are mentioned quite a lot..has anybody fitted and tried these bad boys...My set up is boss katana 100 and vintage reissue v6 strat...would it be worth the effort changing the wilkinsons for the ironstone or am i totaly crazy..as far as i know the wilkinsons are alnico 5s im still searching for that tone or is it the eq??..Im using a zoom g3x for my delay which is pretty close to the mark....some info on the ironstones would be great all ideas welcome best regards chazbear
Welcome to the group. I don't think Ironstones will be any improvement on your Wilkinson pickups, they're both Alnico 5. Are you after emulating the Shadows', particularly Hank Marvin's, sound? Ironstones will bring you close to that but I suspect the Wilkinsons will too. There are plenty of other variables to the sound before you get to change your pickups - string guage, echo unit, not to mention the Katana. Have you tried Sneaky Amps?
do not know if your interested or not but I do have theses for sale

At the moment i havent got the boss tone studio installed properly cant seem to get the driver for win 10 yet so i might have the same problems downloading the sneaky amps maybe you can shed some light on the subject.....again all info is welcome best regards chazbear
hi les thanks for reply that is a good offer but i really cant afford at the moment (christmas and all that)...ill see how my quest goes may give you a shout after new year....if you still have them thanks again best regards chazbear
I bought a Boss Katana 50 Mk II a couple of weeks ago and had no trouble with the drivers on my main computer, which is Windows 10, or on my second one, Windows 8. I did have some trouble with the Tone Studio refusing to recognise the amp connection, and after some online research came across the VGuitar forum, where I discovered that I had to update the amp's firmware - updating a brand new amp!
I've installed the Sneaky Amps, but I haven't used them yet, I've been breaking the speaker in, but I'm looking forward to it, there are some great models in the list.
I installed a set of Ironstone Golds (alico3). in a Mexican Strat and was amazed how good they were, its a while now and they cost £30 for the three, FAR better than the stock Mexican pups, and gave a good shadows sound, but of course everything else has to line up in conjunction with the pups to achieve a significant improvement.
hi frank thats seems to me like a good result...im assuming that the mim strat had ceramic pups as stock. As for the rest of line you mean amp delay and eq to be in the ball park....between you an d me i did buy a set of ironstones alninco 5s £44 best british pounds..i was going to fit on an sx swamp ash strat but had a change of plan ill wait for something better to fit them on So im glad you posted about ironstones ...now it money well spent cheers again frank
I've got the Ironstone Golds, Platinums-and the hybrids. All good, but my favourites are the hybrids for balance across all strings. And Tony, the guy that runs Ironstone is very helpful, knowledgable-and an engineer with a good knowledge of physics. Highly recommended!
