Apache MP3 new recording with '59 special pu'sApache WAV new recording with '59 special pu'sHi Folks, A new Apache recording, done last month with the Tone Spinner '59 special pu's on a MIJ HM strat,a H&CSE,a VOX AC15H1TV- a cheap Devine BM600 condenser studio microphone and a Boss BR1600CD. It was done in one take only, no stuff done afterwards except the balance between BT and the lead track. My precious humble attempt was done years ago, on my stock 58 strat and sounded not bad( according to others). That thread of my previous Apache recording in combination with Witch Doctor and Cavatina (added later) is nearly reaching 4000 views... So why a new recording?...well... I was never completely satisfied with the "normal" vintage magnet stagger of the original pre cbs and reissue maple neck strats in regard with the old hits played on that famous strat. Most of the time, the G string (wound or plain) was to loud in compare with the other strings and that was not the case on the original recordings. Various reasons for that,(dull strings and some cigarette paper) but the most significant was the lower G magnet on the old famous red strat. So with the new pu's in my MIJ HM guitar it sounded on responding level the same as the original!!! I played this recording with the modern galloped parts as done by Hank for the last 50 years and left that small accent out in the intro which I never heard him played again after this recording... I hope you like it and please let me know what you think! Cheers Rob

Hi Rob, The pickups and the string to string balance sounds good and the overall sound is very good, but in comparison with the original Shadows recording, there is a bit too much high end and not really enough bass. This is understandable because the amp Hank used was the second version of the AC15 if the pic we have seen of Hank with his AC15 at Abbey Road said to be taken on the day of the recording is genuine. That amp would have had more bass and less treble. The treble was lower because the amp's input impedance was lower, then there is also the possibility that Hank might have used a longer or lower quality guitar cable with higher capacitance. I am planning to do a recording of Apache very soon using the new EF86 emulator preamp. I hope you don't mind if I do it soon because it would be interesting to compare the tones of your recording and the one I will do. Regards, Charlie

Hi Pete,
Thank you so much for the more then kind words about my attempt to play Apache! This sound of mine is not that difficult to create....I'm sure with the same stuff I used, you will sound the same if not better.
Cheers Rob

Hi Charlie, so very much for your more then kind words about my sound and playing. Your completely right about to much high and to less low.... It's kinda my live sound and I blame the strings they are to fresh in my view. They will be duller like Hanks strings where on the original recording. But that takes time and believe me with the full nickel 13-56 gauge strings it's not one you play for hours.... On my previous recording of Apache the 14-62 strings where 10+ years old and still not rusty! Of course I don't mind you recording Apache, who am I to mind...when the master wants to play/record that tune. Knowing your skills in playing and recording, I don't stand a change (like a snowflake in hell) Looking forwards to your recording and a date we can expect the EF86 emulator pre-amp. Cheers Rob

Thats a good sound Rob. Only thing i noticed in particular was your strings had more life in them than Hanks. Other than that i would be very pleased with that sound. Nice job

Hi Steve, Thank you very much for your really appreciated words about my playing and sound. Yes indeed like I wrote to Charlie, my strings are still to fresh sounding for the old tunes. You know what... we could start a line of pre reliced strings for the shad nut who want it all Cheers Rob
