From various pasts posts there may be a few people who are still a tad confused about how these work and how they influence tone/saturation, I came across this Helix YT Video by Jason Sadites which explains it very well the same principals applies if it’s hardware or software if they have common features:

The general advice is to keep the drive levels down when trying to get “That Sound” and in broad terms this is solid advice, but it’s worth experimenting with balancing the Drive a little in relation to the Master to bring back the sparkle and subtle tones.
