Being a complete dimwit re the wiring of a guitar can anyone enlighten me on this scenario; I am wanting to fit a set of DiMarzio Evolution pickups to a guitar. As I understand it for humbuckers the general rule is 500k pots for Volume and tone.......why not 250k as usual in strats.
2) The Jem site says a 331 capacitor for the volume pot and a 223 capacitor for the tone pot.
My query is Whats the difference between 250/500k pots and what is the function of different degree numbered capacitors. Any advice will give me some insight at least. Regards Tony

Pickups are born with a natural resonant frequency peak - that is a hump in the response curve, which give the pickup it's personal sound character.
When pickups are connected to the vol/tone pots the resonant freq peak is loaded down. The higher pot value - the less loading. Loadings isn't just a bad thing, it helps shape the sound. 250K are the right value for Strat's because it cuts some high freq's we (normally) don't want. Humbucking pickups have a fatter sound with less highs which Calls for a 500K pot in order to keep some high freq.
I'm not familiar with the DM Evolutions so I can't comment on those.
Tone caps function by - well, let's just call it shunting high freq to ground. The higher the cap value the more of the upper freq's they cut as the tone pot is rolled down.
A cap across the vol pot will form a so called treble bleed filter, to compensate for a normal high freq loss when the vol control is rolled off. There are several ways if doing the filter calling for different cap values in relation to the vol pot value.
331 cap = 330 picofarads 223 = 22 nano farads = 0.022 micro farads

Hi Tony, I can't add much to what Erik has said, except that if the guitar has a volume pot for each pickup it might be better to not add a cap to either volume pot. 0.022uF is the value that Gibson normally uses for tone controls, and also later Strats. You might find Johan's thread about hum cancelling pickups interesting. It's in the projects section. Regards, Charlie

Hi Erik and Charlie, Thanks very much for that in depth explanation and from that I understand much better the function of the capacitor and Tone pot. Although I've played guitar for years I never really bothered about what was under the bonnet. Many thanks. Regards Tony
