Hi Charlie,
I was wondering whether you know the "story" of the tune Stingray when it comes to the "hardware". Was there any fuzz effect used for the fuzzy sound of the bass strat (Vox Tone Bender maybe?) or would it be possible that that sound was the result of the imperfection of the bass amp or speakers in those years?
Everybody:
Is there any other Shadows, Jet Harris or other non Shad tune that has the same bass sound? I am really "mesmerized" by this sound but so far I was unable to find similarly sounding tunes.
Geza

Hi Geza,
It is definitely a fuzz effect but don't know which was used. Possibly a Vox, there weren't many to choose from at the time. The fuzz seems to have a short sustain so the fuzz effect was probably set low.
I think it's the bass frequencies that give that sound more than anything else, apart from the fuzz effect itself.
Regards,
Charlie

I forgot to mention that there is probably echo as well (knowing that Hank would probably want to use some kind of echo), maybe the first head of a Binson, think on the lines of a single repeat around 60-80ms, which would give a thickening effect to the sound.
Regards,
Charlie.

Charlie,
Thanks for the tipp on the echo part. Since currently I only have two effect processors (Magicstomp (Pitch -12) and the built in effects of my Vox AD60VTX (Fuzz)), I wouldn't be able to test it with using echo also.
(It's too bad, that you cannot combine the available effects of the Magicstomp in any pair you want to, because it does have Pitch, Fuzz and Echo too)
In the future if I will find to have a need for more effect processors to be present at the same time with more than one song I might get a 2nd MagicStomp. (after all playing guitar is "only" my hobby and I am married too, if you know what I mean. )

Hi Geza,
The echo effect would have to be applied after the fuzz effect as you appear to have realised. It is a pity the Magicstomp can't do other effects as well as multitaps.
There is a section in the Magicstomp for Distortion>Delay. Maybe that should work depending on the type of distortion you can get. The delay should be simple enough, just use little or no feedback. If it is too much, turn down the delay level.

Charlie

I use a Fender Bass VI to replicate this track and use exactly the same distortion settings as I use for The Warlord... no reverb and no echo. You can hear/see a live performance here gilliangvideo.co.uk/shadows/shadowmania2005/stingraybb.wmv

Hi Charlie,
Since my Strat is a regular one, I need to lower the pitch of it by 12 notes first (before applying any other effect) , and the pitch changing effect does not come with any distortion or delay in the Magicstomp. Right now I am OK with using the Pitch changing and Fuzz, my initial question was really just out of curiosity about the whereabout of the origin of the fuzz sound in the original recording. But as soon as I'll be able to test it with a touch of echo just for a bit fatter sound, I will update this post.
Thanks,
Geza

Hi David,
Thanks for your input and the video file, this was the very first time I saw and not just listened to the Stingray.

Hi Geza,
Sorry, I hadn't latched onto the fact that you needed to pitch detune. The pitch effect needs to be applied first, then the fuzz effect.
Hi David,
The sound you are getting proves that the fuzz is the most important component of the core sound. I noticed the 3 switches on your Bass VI, is it an early one?Fender changed to 4 switches on the later ones.

Yes Charlie - according to Fender it's one of the first dozen made.
Incidentally, when playing The Warlord, I use the Q2 EFTP double track patch in tandem with distortion from my GX700.
