I don't know whether it's true or not, but apparently if you listen carefully to 'Peggy Sue' you can hear Buddy's pick-up being changed just before the lead break. I read somewhere that it wasn't actually Buddy himself who flicks the switch, it was someone who happened to be in the studio assisting Norman Petty. Sounds almost primitive compared with today's technology, doesn't it?

I believe it was Niki Sullivan who flicked Buddy's switch in Peggy Sue. Regards, Charlie

What do you reckon chaps - an elaborate hoax? I can't imagine many takers and it's going to cost an arm and a leg! You'd need to get a cheap Strat 'clone' if has to be hacked about. I don't let people even BREATHE on mybest one!

Taylor Guitars have been doing this for one or two years. True, but the GDK system is an infinitely better design. On the Taylor, you have to detune the strings and then unscrew the pickguard in order to remove it, then reverse the process with the new pickguard. On the GDK, you do none of this, the complete pickguard slides in and out, whilst maintaining the tuning - that's got to be a much better idea.

There's not a chance I'd even consider buying one. I would not allow my precious Strat to be abused in such a way.

There's not a chance I'd even consider buying one. I would not allow my precious Strat to be abused in such a way. Firstly, I'm not sure (from the limited information on their website) if they are proposing to modify an instrument you already own or if they are selling you the complete kit. Secondly, although I do understand your point of view, I think it rather depends on just that - the individuals point of view. My point of view is that a guitar (other than, perhaps, a truly collectable instrument) is simply one of the tools of my trade. T To that end, I will happily chop any instrument about if the end result is an improvement to that tool, be it playability, tone or extra features such as midi, etc. None of my guitars is that 'precious' to me, they are simply a means to an end.

Wow I envy you, if I could seal mine in a humidity controlled room and only people with white gloves and full protective clothing be allowed within 100 yards of it I would, or at least so the misses tells me, I am rather protective. I do (and did) allow a pro to change pickups but not a chance would I allow somebody to take a dremel to my pride & joy. Wonder what happens to the resonance when you start hacking at the body of your guitar. DC

I can see this sort of thing may work for those of us who are professionals using their instruments to "make money" however most who use their instrument for their own pleasure probably would not "take the risk".

Fair enough, Graeme. Horses for courses and all that. But I'm of the old school, I won't even have a tuning lock fitted on my Strat (my mate has one and I think it's ghastly!). You see, I rely on my guitar to earn me a living and I'm happy with the tone and the overall sound of the instrument, and I just would not take the chance of having any of that altered by someone taking a drill and a chisel to my axe.
Also, there's something darned sexy about Strats and I would hate to see mine mutilated in this way.
