Hi
Just read a msg from somebody calling themselves "Graylion" (lionelat yexleydot orgdot uk) asking me to respond to a link to prove I am a "real human being" & using this groups address. It's in the spam bin at the moment untill I hear from Charlie or Ron. Anybody else received one of these ?
Dick.

I know Lionel Yexley, and Graylion is his user name on the old site, not sure if he's made it here yet. I only open emails if they have text written in them so I know for a fact it is from who it is supposed to be. If someone can't be bothered to write a message in an email they send to me (and having only an attachment), then they won't get a reply. Regards, Charlie

Not had one of those just checked I'm OK (for now) Incidently if you try to replace the @ sign with AT in you email addy in profile its tells you you will need to receive a new email to reregister or something like that ? Roger

Hi Ron
Old "Lionel" is in the bin now & marked as a "phisher" Never had the need yet to "protect" my email with AT that I use on this and similar sites. It's not my primary email addy & is as well protected by software as you can reasonably get. However your advice is a timely reminder to be "on guard" in this sometimes strange cyber world we move in nowadays
Dick.

My email address is supposed to be hidden on this site, yet I still received the email from Graylion. How did he get it? Can someone please check my profile to see whether the email address is there. Thanks Geoff

Geoff, The e-mail was addressed to Managers of the "Charlie Hall" MSN Groups. So the addresses were obtained from there. That site has now been closed down.

Roger, Your email must be correctly written in your profile, for various reasons, one of which you have already discovered. In messages, I always put it like this: charliehallATntlworld.com (replacing AT with @). Regards, Charlie

Hi guys - don't panic! I'm here now, having successfully migrated! This is what I received before even knowing about this new site. I was still only registered on MSN sites at the time:-

Hi Lionel, This obviously points to someone up to no good. Not sure what that was all about but rest assured the only message I sent out (to all members) was one informing everyone about this new site. I'm not sure it was a good idea to reply to that message you received! Be wary with anything you receive back. Not sure exactly what you mean by formatting controls but if you click on "profile" at the top, then on the next page (your profile) click on Modify Profile, the next page allows you to change your personal settings. Regards, Charlie

Hi all, In case anyone wonders why I am editing their messages, I am just being extra cautious about displaying genuine email addresses in messages, so I have disguised what look like real email addresses in this topic by changing the @ and '.' to the corresponding words.
Hope no one objects.

Thanks Charlie, nothing else has come through like that rogue message. Perhaps my spam trapper settings are better now? the odd thing is that someone used the email address format that you recommend - using "AT" instead of @ etc.
My question about formatting has been answered by - [glow=red,2,300][shadow=red,left,300][glow=red,2,300]THIS!![/glow][/shadow][/glow] [glow=red,2,300]LOL!![/glow] My first response was via Quick Reply I think and it had no options. This isn't quite so good as the MSN system as you can't see the effects until you [glow=red,2,300]"Preview". [/glow][shadow=red,left,300][shadow=red,left,300]The other slight snag is that my keyboard has been set to USA![/shadow]Cheers, Lionel[/shadow][/font][/color]
[glow=red,2,300]PS. I will write with sensible effects next time![/glow]

Hi Lionel, Bill had edited your message so it did not show real email addresses! Unless it was already showing "at" before. I understand what you mean about formatting now. I haven't played with those as I don't have the time to. Regards, Charlie

Hi Lionel! The e-mail address on the spurious e-mails, is that belonging to an historical organisation for Lionel Yexley the Navy reformer. The e-mail in question was obviously a "phishing" exercise, although I haven't yet seen anything as a result of it. Mind you my "spam filter" on BT Yahoo is very good.

Thanks shannock, I learnt about the naval man many years ago as my brother-in-law was a Hydrographic surveyor in Southampton Docks. At the time he told me that "Lionel Yexley" had written books on the subject and actually 'founded' the modern method of surveying. Really odd that he chose such a 'nom-de-plume'! I can't figure out how the phishing got to Charlie's site though. Cheers, Lionel

I don't know Lionel. It would be interesting to see if any of the Site Managers of the other MSN groups had had similar messages. Unfortunately, the e-mail addresses were totally visible on MSN. I must admit, apart from a good "spam filter", I also use a second e-mail address for "non-essential" traffic.
