Hi all
I seem to remember a while a back seeing a list of effects/echo's ranked by Charlie (I think) in order of merit.
Anybody know where it is/was. ?
From my (limited) experience I would rate the Zoom G2 above M/Stomp, Copicat, Zoom G7 & all the single "echo pedals" that I have tried/owned.
No experience with the rack mount stuff though, or indeed any of the vintage Binson/Meazzi units & such.
Cheers
Dick

HI DICK,,, yes this was an interesting topic with a lot of input by many,, my opinions as I see it ''only'' for price of unit & cost of charlies patches is in the ''digital'' range of units the ''yamaha-''magic''-stomp, it sounds great, easy to tweek [echo level& repeat level]& is very portable,,, for those lugging gear to ''gig's'' etc ,foot switcable etc etc,, I cannot comment on the ''G2's-''G9's as i don't have one, But I do have a rfx 2200 with ''roberto's''patches [thankyou again roberto]& with the ''tone-lab'' in front is very good ,exellent actully[listen to ''gerebriels'' posts on ''u-tube'' ] gerabriel has charlie's patches.... BUT I have just acquired charlies so good patch set for my Quadraverb2 & this unit to me has the thicker more analog sound.using as well the ''tone lab'' in front of it as well, But the rack-units are bulky & more effort to take to gigs &this does not worry me as I only play at home.. And of course a stand alone rack mount unit thats top-hole & I can vouch for this after travelling to ''western-australia'' recently & met in person the designer-builder ,''PAUL'' and got a one on one demonstration of the''aussie''''TVS3'' ,but ,is not comparable ''price-wise''to the average digital units,, a great-pity,but I can see why they cost so much after meeting with paul.. $3,750-OZ dollars at the moment.. SO getting back to the more affordable ''digital'' units I would rate them like this ,that is the ones I own..... For pricealone the m/stomp no1,,,,,,,, zoom 2200 no2 & alesis Q2 no3>>>>>>>>>>>>> FOR sound ,,the alesis Q2 no 1 The yamaha-magic stomp with guitar plugged strait-in No2& the 2200-with the tone-lab in front also no 2 The 2200 with guitar straigh-in no 3 THESE are my views only ''DICK'' ? The fact remains that it is really a combination of how every unit is set-up ,guitar, effects, comp ,amp etc so many settings that can alter the final sound etc.. If you listen to ''peter-korving'' magic-stomp'' and listen to ''PAUL'' TVS3'' version's of the magic''ATLANTIS'' you will apreciate my meaning of set-up's...THESE 2 versions are to me at least are the best [including the origonal] that I have heard... IT would be so good if ''peter-korving''[are you readiing this ''PETE''[ nudge, nudge, wink, wink],would devolge his fantastic set-up here on the site, he is the '''master of sound'' in my opinion.... It's certanly an on going topic that's for sure ... CHEERS from Oz...

Hi AB
Good to hear from you again mate. I wonder how many "echo" units there are out there, must run into hundreds I suppose. The Zoom G2 is always worth a try (not least because they are so cheap to buy !) the G7 & G9 are very complex with a pre-amp valve that does not seem to add very much for "our" type of music. Like you I am marooned at home for playing nowadays & I would just love to try out the TVS & even the "Q2" but unless I win the lottery/pools etc.. I'm firmly in budget/the well known auction site bargain territory for my musical gear. Current project is a small amp that will hopefully sound like a '55/56 fender Champ with capacitor coupling instead of tone "stack" o/put will be around 6w clean (hopefully). A Line6 Guitar port/G2/Amp will be the proposed setup. The question I am mulling over at this time is:- clean "neutral" amp with only an effects box (G2 in my case) between the guitar & amp, or.....modelling software to try & mimic the AC 15/30 sound as well as the effects??? I suppose my "ideal" Shads sound would be the "Live at Kingston" sound which would be just an "echo" box & AC30 I presume. I had a chinese AC15 a while back (cc1) & was very dissapointed with it & felt it was not really much good for home use as it worked far better when "driven" at to high a volume for our home. The problem for me is finding an amp that sounds good at "bedroom" volumes. ;D I'm always interested in the sound file posters "set up's" especially wether it is a "live" recording from a mic or post produced in something like Audition. Ah well :- still looking for that "sound in my head"
Cheers

Dick, the amp for home use, which is receiving a lot of favourable comments, is the Fender Super Champ XD at about £180.00 I had already got my Vox AD50 when I learned about them, or I might have been tempted. Having said that, now I am beginning to really understand how to use the AD, I rather like it. I was trying a couple of Shadows numbers on the AC30TB model yesterday evening, and it sounded quite good to my ears. Incidentally "GG" (Gerabriel), also sometimes, uses a AC30CC2 for his recordings. In the main though, it seems to be the rfx2200 into a "desktop" ToneLab (like all obsolete and out of date equipment they seem to be priced through the roof), straight into his computer. I think it was Charlie, in an earlier thread, who said he thought he could hear some external noises on one or two of his You Tube numbers. (They still sound d**n good to me!). My set up is either a Classic 50's Strat/Burns Marquee or Squier Affinity with GFS 64 Vintage staggered pick-ups, into either an rfx2000 or Magic Stomp, into a Marshall ED1 compressor into the amp. I have for a Fender Volume/Tone pedal, but it is being modified at the moment having a large tone pot put in.

Hi Kevin
Thanks for the reply, interesting the use of a compressor as the last leg of the chain into the amp. The Champ XD series does seem to be very popular with members, I suppose the one I have is the same as the smaller one without the digi stuff. Looks like playing through an amp for fun & for recording use a "modeller" (Guitar port in my case) to effects into computer. Must make the effort to record something & post it to see what can be done with all this computer stuff ! Well I've got a volume pedal, so will have to look out for a compressor pedal next.
Cheers
Dick

HI DICK KEV & ALL ,, I have alway's wanted a Q2 ,as I have owned an early quad since 89 & just recently fitted an op-grade chip to ''PLUS'' STD to get ''multi-tap'' & I only have 2 multitap patches that I devised my self & I like the old girl..BUT 2 months ago on the US the well known auction site advertised for Q2's & I bought 2 cheaper than the magic/stomp.......1@ 142.50 us & 1@151.00 us & at the time our oz dollar was 89centsto 1 us dollar [not so now] & now I have seen them go for less but now the 62cents per dollar is not that good& I don't my self need or can afford any more units,, as to acquire what I have over the last 2 years took much hard work to get that hobbie money....I am 69 now dick & hope to be able to sit back on my govt pension & do my long-lost hobbie.. dick the ''G2's'' seem to be a popular unit[must be good] & the behringer compressor units [3 of them i think] get superb ratings & are very cheap? ?[ask ''emiel''] cheers..

Hi Ozziebarry (not be confused with "aussie barry") Good to hear from you mate, is everybody in Aus called Barry Thanks for the tip about the Beringher, they seem to make decent gear without the high price tags of the "brand names" I wonder if there is any interest in a thread for "budget" gear ? the cheaper the better. I always get more satisfaction from getting a cheap piece of kit to work well than in just buying a proven (expensive) part/guitar/amp etc... I like the G2, but most of the Shads music players prefer the M/Stomp. The G2 is cheap, works well & is simple to programme & use (and also works on batteries if needed!) I'm 62 now & semi-retired, working 16hrs a week in a local DIY outlet to try & keep my brain (and knee's) working. Trying to delay the onset of arthritus (worse in my left hand of all places!) which has made it almost impossible for me to barre chords unless the guitar neck is up around my shoulder somewhere. My left wrist has been broken three times over the years, so that's probably where the problem lies That Django fella seemed to do alright with only a couple of fingers, so I suppose there's still hope for me Cheers Dick

Hi Dick, I suppose you have tried cod liver oil capsules? I have them and keep forgetting to take them but they certainly seem to work for me when I remember to take them. Regards, Charlie

It's not the cod liver oil that's keeping you awake at nights Charlie, is it?
When did you last see a shoal of cod sleeping?
Cheers Barry

Hi Charlie
I take cod liver oil the "Geordie way"...... in a spoon from the bottle. ;D Also take the Glucosy-whatsit tablets, the aches & pains come & go, but I'm sure they would be a lot worse without the cl oil & stuff. Dr Smirmnof's patented distilled health drink works well, but makes my eyes go funny when I get near the bottom of the bottle
Cheers
Dick.

Hi Dick. A very good range of pedals, are those produced by BIYANG. They average around £55 on e-Bay, but all have consistently good write-ups on Harmony Central, and appear to be well constructed, and people rate them more highly than Behringer. At the time I was looking, the only compressor on e-Bay was the Marshall ED1, which I managed to pick up for about £18. So I was well chuffed.

I have a Behringer PA and compressor pedal. Both had problems (I now think caused by DC voltage from the rogue MagicStomp) and both were replaced without question with no delivery charges. Behringer have, at least in Australia, though they told me it was their "if your not happy we're not happy" world wide policy, the most fantastic service I have experienced. It gives confidence to try their stuff .. and it is good value for trying different things. eg a compressor pedal about $40, UK 18 quid ?
As for cod liver oil and Dr Smirnoff's remedy for everything except eyesight .. just keep a close grip on the cods (they're just under the Proboards "thingy") and the second bottle of remedy close by. No need for good eyesight and it definitely helps with arthritis !
Barry, apart from Brian and Dick do you think our UK friends understand this Oz humour ?? My lovely wife is English, and even though she's been here for over 50 yrs still doesn't quite get it !). I suspect it is the climate ... mind you it may also be us !

Hi Dick, By Australian standards Fiji is fairly close .... a reasonable walk and bit of a swim though ! If your mate was in the Oz army he may well have spent time in Wagga Wagga as it has a large Army training base, also a large Airforce base and a Uni and lots of wheat, cattle, horses, sheep kangaroos, rabbits about 65,000 people. I actually live just outside Wagga town. regards George

Hi George A walk then a bit of a swim So not really that far then. This Wagga was one of the Fiji islands & by all accounts was barely 65,000 sq yards size (plenty of turtles though). Four of these guys arrived in England for basic training in the winter of 63 & their first posting was out to Berlin with us lot, then off to Norway for some winter training, what a welcome to the Northern Hemisphere !!! The barracks in Berlin had a large tiled toilet/shower block at the end of the corridors that had just about the most perfect echo with a touch of reverb that suited my little valve amp just about perfectly. Late night practice sessions were unfortunately almost always short due to the lack of humour of the other occupants who thought 1am was not a reasonable time to practice (why does music always A, sound better late at night & B, sound better loud ?) Happy days Dick.
