Hi All, This is one I did some time ago. It's a copy of the original mono version that I have on vinyl. I used my Jan 63 Strat, 12's, TVS3 and Vox AC30H2. U87 mic, Focusright ISA 430 preamp, Mackie D8b desk and Mackie 24/96 HDR. It was recorded to sound close to the original with overdriven guitar and echo's and slight tape saturation. For the bt I used my Fender Jazz bass, orchestra was Personal Orchestra, rhythm guitar, my Strat again, and drums, BFD2. Hope you like Phil 01 Spring. (NEW)_2.mp3

Hi Phil,
Once again a super job in matching the sounds and playing, you got very close - well done.
Just an observation (in no way meant to be a criticism) I felt the strings were a little too forward in the mix (comparing to the version I have from a stereo CD [played as mono] there seems to be more W & F on the Hanks guitar.)
Excellent work Phil, very enjoyable.
Kind regards,
Chris

Thanks Chris. I usually do a remix after a long period of not listening. Good observation with the strings, i've had another listen and they could be reduced by 2 or 3 db's at 1.21 to 1.28, there's not much in it as Hanks guitar has a hard time competing here anyway. I feel the guitar is ok, but that's not to say that I might do a re-record because when I did this I had literally just got back to the Shads stuff after 48 years also I had just taken delivery of my Vox and TVS3 so everything was a bit new I can now get closer still but it's all time and I have other projects in the pipeline! Hi Phil
Really nice. I agree with Chris's comments about the strings, but it did not spoil it at all.
A lovely tune really well played. It has a place in my heart, as my late father used to like me playing it, although I still haven't managed to perfect the section with the double stops. We had the Shads version played at his funeral which brought lumps in everyones throats, but also had everyone (including the vicar) asking for more info about the tune.
Kind Regards
Ade

Hi Phil, Good sound and well played. I agree with Chris that Hank has more wow and flutter. I'm not so sure that Hank has as much overdrive on the dry signal but there certainly is plenty on the echo. The orchestra seems to be in stereo or simulated stereo, was this intentional as you mentioned that this was a copy of the mono version? Regards, Charlie

Thanks Ade and Charlie.
Charlie.....woops! I did'nt check the file before posting and as you say, it's not mono, it's a narrow stereo version I did as an experiment, I have a mono one stashed somewhere and if I remember right with diffent guitar settings ie middle pickup as I think this file was Neck P but I could be wrong with that as I did quite a few takes with different pickup and amp settings, i'll try to find the right one
As for the "mono" sound, I have as I said the original mono 45 and also a digital stereo version. The speed of the digital version is slower, in fact by the end of the tune about three seconds.
The logical answer to this is because my mono version was played from a turntable, but if this was so then the pitch would be slightly out, but it's not.
Another thing that I have just checked out. The mix is not exactly the same when turning the stereo version to mono. The instruments sound slightly eq'd differently, also the strings part that I mentioned at 1.21 - 1.28, on the stereo version Hanks guitar is pretty much heard, on the mono it is getting over powered by the strings!
Gonna look for the mono version now ;D
Phil
I've just found the file, and noticed that the snare hits change on the second chorus, i'll post it when i've edited it, IMO the guitar is a lot better with this one.

hi, I agree with charlie on this recording and the stereo version more convincing, the distortion is a bit too much and the backing track too loud but very good rendition.
cheers peter
