Hi Rosemary, Looks like a nice guitar, its a pity you didn't get to play it. I have decided to restring my old project, thay cant be any good after 10 years in the loft, so I can compare it with the modern day pups, it will be interesting to see if pre 1960 pups can deliver. Will let you know the result. Regards, Maurice.

Hi Rosemary, Reading your story reminded me of an old Hofner Senator I have had since 1967. Soon after I bought it the neck started to part from the body, so I used Araldite and clamped the joint with a G clamp and drilled 2 holes through the neck and doweled it into the shoulder of the guitar and left it for a week. Unfortunately when I strung it the action was very high, not unplayable but not very comfortable, so it has remained in my loft for about 30 years ( talk about a little knowledge being dangerous ) Regards, Maurice.

Hi Charlie, Yes I still have the guitar. After about ten years in the loft I took it down on Tuesday and would you believe it was still in tune I forgot to mention in those days truss rods and intonation were a mystery so we placed a stainless steel rod up the length of the neckand glued it in (the neck is still straight) as for intonation I measured the distance on my MIM Strat and it was as very close (probably just luck). The guitar was gigged by me for about ten years without any problems. Regards, Maurice, PS here is a pic of the back. Attachments:

Sorry but the pic did not show in the preview so I got it right after all. The pic shows my first project in 1961/2 and was carved by a friends father who was an expert carpenter. The body which was based on the shape of a Futurama and made from solid mohogany, as was the arm which is maple, the pups and electrics came from a very early Hofner Colorama, the bridge and trem were made by an engineering friend from chrome plated brass and I made the scratchplate from white perspex. Finally the body and arm were finished by French polisher. Hope you find this of interest. Regards, Maurice.

Hi Noel and Dick, Very interesting to read your comments about the Sue Ryder Guitar. As I am looking for a cheap Strat type guitar to practise setting up and not worrying about making a mess of it, do you think this would be suitable ? Regards, Maurice.

Hi Peter, Many thanks for the reply but Northumberland is a bit too far north, I was thinking somewhere in the Merseyside area. Regards, Maurice.

Hi Ian, Thanks for the reply. The comment in question did say the club area on this site but I think you must be right as there are no links to any such site. Does anybody know if there is a Shadows club in the North West ? Regards, Maurice.

Hi Tony, I had the good fortune to see the Shadows live at the Floral Hall in Southport, I think it was 1961 or 62 in their original line up. Regards, Maurice.

Hi Paul & John, Many thanks for your opinions on the Ironstone Gold pups, as you say for the price you cannot go wrong. When I get back home from my trip to S Ireland I will order a set and get on with building my perloid scratchplate to fit to my MIM Strat and let you know the result. Regards, Maurice.

Hi, Re solidl's remedy of beer and whiskey reminds me of an impromptu sing along at a friends house. I hadn't played for about three months and my fingers got quite sore but when I tried dipping my fingers in the whiskey it helped a lot. As it turned out I played for about 3 hours with one glass to drink from and another to soak my fingers in. Worth a try, if it doesn't work drink the whiskey! Regards, Maurice.

Hi Steve, From my own experience I am sure if you change to a heavier guage of strings you will need to add a spring or increase the strength of the existing springs or the tremolo plate will be too far off the body. Hope this helps. Regards, Maurice.

Hi, I have been thinking about adding a Volume pedal to my set up, but I'm a bit confused because some are Volume pedals and others Volume/Expression pedals. It would be appreciated if anyone can explain the difference, Many thanks, Maurice.

Hi Charlie, Many thanks for your comments, I have read your article about amp tone controls and have to say it is the most comprehensive explanation I have ever seen. I have only been a member of this site for a few days but have learned more than in the last few years. Regards, Maurice.

As a new member I am delighted to be part of this community as I have been a HBM follower for many years. I have been reading links about the sound achieved on Atlantis when playing the melody an octave higher when the notes seem to sound as though they could last forever, and wondered if I needed a sustain pedal to emulate this effect. Any advice would be appreciated.
