ian the thread was if they are better made from better matials ect or simlar matials or are they just overpriced. personaly it seems to me mr kinman has put a lot of time and reasearch into his pickups and has offered a range of pickups that are better thought out and better made than most out there. having said that most people cant just ignore the cost of them. but again i was asking (not just kinman pickups) is the extra cost gone into matials and quality or just over priced. kinman seems to put a lot of work into his pickups research ect and so in my opinon this explains a lot of the extra cost. but to me there seems to be a lot of hyped up high priced copy pickups out there. peter Hi Peter,I would think that they are made from top quality materials and there are a lot of pieces!! I once tried to repair one that I had stupidly messed with and ended up with a huge amount of bits!! I sent the whole lot back to Kinman and had it repaired and working in 10 days (and that included sending it to Oz and back) and the cost was reasonable. cheers ian

Going back to the original premise of the thread and ignoring all the Sales Pitches for other pickups - if you are ignoring what they sound like - and surely THAT is why you buy them, not for what they cost - then buy the cheapest pickups you can and revel in their inglorious tone and let me enjoy my Kinman FV's, happy in the thought that I LOVE the tone they give, think that the money I spent was worth the Sound I hear, and can't think of any pickup I've heard that I would change them for. cheers ian (that is probably the longest sentence in the history of English grammar - my Mr Cooper would have a fit !!!!! )

Hi all, I have aquired a 1970's 3 bolt Fender, a 1984 mij squire, a couple of Elite Strats and Ian - sixchannels - cij Fender, my first in fiesta red. By the way Ian if you read this, I used it last Saturday for a short set of 8 and it is playing really well. Hi Good to hear that my (ex-my) CIJ Strat is giving good service. cheers ian

Ian, Was that Barratts, Oxford Road, Manchester? DaveC Most certainly was Dave. Saturdays we used to get the 15 bus to Oxford Street and window lick at Reno's, Johnny Roadhouses and Barratts. I know its off topic but I remember being in Reno's and on the wall was an all black Burns Black Bison (stereo ??). At the time I thought it was the best looking guitar I had ever seen but thought it "sounded funny". And at Johnny's, they had got in the Bird all-valve amps - big square boxes that weighed a ton - and I marvelled at how the reverb echoed in the speaker if you lifted the amp up by a corner a couple of inches and dropped it back down. I know, I know!!! But at Barratts you could almost always get to play something in the shop most Saturdays, especially if you were an OK player. When I decided on a Strat (to go with my Harmony 75 that I had already bought the year before) I played a few in the shop before choosing the one I wanted. They all played different, which I thought was odd. The one I chose had "that sound" and I kept it until 1975, when I sold it for next to nothing. cheers ian

Having gone the archtop route in the late 50's, I was terribly un-impressed with the harsh, jangly sound that was Buddy Holly. I thought the guitar was an odd shape for a guitar as well as sounding horrid. Then I saw The Shadows on the old B&W TV !! The sound was quite different and all of a sudden it was a wonderful guitar ! lol !! (Well, I was only 14 and fickle). I had no idea what the colour of the guitar was - it COULD have been black and white for all I knew - and it was the music press and album sleeves that showed me it was Red - but NOT Fiesta Red. Find me an album sleeve that showed Hank with his 34346 in salmon pink/fiesta red! It took 2 years plus before I actually owned one, although I played one (when I could get away with it) at Barratts most Saturdays. I once got shoved off the nice warm seat that was the top of a 1962/3 AC30 whilst plonking on a sunburst 62 in favour of a curly headed guy who, apparently, wanted to buy one. Dont know if he ever did buy one, but Tony Hicks of The Hollies took my place and he was (and still is) a great player. cheers ian

Lovely, brave, sensitive and loving words from Janet, who is clearly still hurting. A wonderful idea to donate the money coming in, hopefully continuously, to this special branch of cancer research. Info on the Fund was not included in the Post - SO, for those who wish still to contribute please note the following info -
To donate to this Fund use the following details via your on-line Banking HSBC Branch Sort Code 40-46-39 Account no. 61794353 Account Name: Jet Harris Memorial Fund.
for donations outside the UK Swift Code: MIDLGB22 IBAN: GB64MIDL40463961794353
Janet / Audrey - have you thought of setting it up so those who want to use Paypal can contribute that way? In this modern society, Paypal is a fast and safe way of sending money to someone and may well help swell the Fund more.
Best regards Ian

Yes Robert - I think its still a Beta too !! Even Mozilla say that 5 is out now and 6 and 7 are right behind. That tells me that 5 was NOT ready to come out. They seem to be getting the MS Philosophy of releasing stuff that isnt ready and getting the Users to sort it for them. I know its OpenSource and free and all that but its Not good enough! cheers Ian

Hi All For those who use Mozilla Firefox, please note that the latest version - 5 FINAL - has a bug that affects Tiscali / TalkTalk users. If you update to this version, when you log on to your Tiscali account and try to get e-mails it says - "you have undefined e-mails" and you can get no further. The only solution then is to System Restore back to Version 4 or use IE. The bug has been reported to Mozilla by me, along with loads of other users. Be careful. cheers ian

Its not often I call for HELP but I have been given the Challenge to play the main theme of Dvorzaks New World Symphony "Largo" (aka Smokie Blues Away by Sutherland Brothers) at a posh "Do" and some of the chords are beating me when I try to make the BT. Its played orchestrally in Db but I'd play it in C (cries of "cheat"!!). Does anyone have the chords. Its summat like C2/C / Am / Dm, / G7 C / / dm / G7 F / Em / F /Em etc etc. What are the subtle chords used? All and any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers ian

The HBM sig Squier Strats were part of the Silver Series and were quite High End spec and quality for Squier at the time. Not as good as Protone Squiers but pretty decent none the less. I had one for years. The pickups were very average (bar magnet Squier stock) and a change to Kinmans transformed the tone. The bridge is standard Squier with a mazak block and its worth knowing that a genuine Fender 62 Bridge (steel block) is a straight swap fit. What a bargain! cheers Ian ps - HBM only endorsed the fact that the guitar represented value for money for the beginner and intermediate, not that anything on the guitar was specced by Hank himself - he didnt.

Hi John I converted my 45 to an mp3 for my ipod and it would be easy to upload it to 4Shared etc but I dont know what the legal, or Charlie's position would be about it so for now I havent. Its a great tune, quite easy for the guitarist to play BUT the BT makes it. Shades of Joe Meek with that Stylophone and also Del Shannon' "Runaway" at around 1.16. Good track for a drummer to get his teeth into as well. Any offers on a BT anyone??!! cheers ian

Well done Chloe - and to you too "Pop". My new grand-daughter (3 months old) is also called Chloe and I wish she will grow up to play as well as you do. It is good to hear music played well AND also have the correct sense of timing too. Many young players can play the tune but have no FEEL for the music. You do!!. Apache was the first piece I learned was back in 1961 and it makes me smile to think of how poorly I played it compared to your excellent standard. Well Done! cheers Ian

Bizarrely a German site but the phone number is listed. Alan does not have a website but is contactable by e-mail after you have phoned him. I'm still in love with my Brason HBM 40th Anniversary technical copy after 5 years. A thoroughly decent bloke and a total Craftsman. Be warned - his leadtime might be quite long. HTH Ian

Hi John usually unless the amp has a dedicated input for a CD player etc as well as one for the guitar, it wont work. Its an impedance mismatch thing, I think. Maybe better to think of the backing tracks being on your computer (or played on your computer) and a Line Out on your amp (if it has one) feeding into your PC. It could be that there is a way of re-matching the output of the Player so that a guitar amp Jack input can accept it. Lets hope that there is someone with the technical know-how who knows if it's possible. cheers ian
