Hi Mathew didn’t know that, intresting, I know I saw him play a Matchless DC5 Combo in the 80s 90s but can’t remember exact dates, have seen them use Fender Twin also. Just to add to that, I was told by someone in the know, that on the first South African tour, they used Gibson Amplification on stage.

Hi Baz, Hope your doing okay. Yes, that’s correct, I had wondered wether or not it was a psychological thing with it, thinking the sound was different using the AB box but I know it shouldn’t be. Our singer said my sound was thinner than usual but it could be that I didn’t alter the EQ as we had a rehearsal in a studio in the afternoon and got the sound pretty much nailed but when we played a spot in the pub n the night, it wasn’t the same sound I had in the rehearsal. All I did in the pub was alter my volume setting, I should have checked my EQ to make sure I had a fuller sound. As mad as it sounds, the folks in the pub said it sounded fabtastic but it just goes to show that us Anoraks only know the difference lol

Hi Charlie, Thanks very much for your reply, I tried it at our local pub on Tuesday night, it worked a treat. The only thing I am not sure about it, what would create the better sound, with the volume turned up on the AB box or just on the AMP volume settings?
Thanks Peter

Hi everyone, Has anyone ever used the A-B abs 521 with an AC30 that had the EF86 add on mod, with success. My issue has been, that during a Gig, keep swapping channels from the AC30 normal then climbing over the back of the Amp to plug into the EF86 input. I bought one of the boxes but not had chance to try it proper but I assume it to be the answer, to make it tidier on stage presentation. Here is the ‘Thing’ would you think that you loose sound quality? My set up is Amp, H&C, guitar. Any advice and or experience using a machine like this gratefully appreciated.
Cheers Pete

Hi Andy, Yes, I understand, a compressor is a great price of kit and most multi pedal boards have them in built, the quality determined by what machine you use. I use an old Boss ME5, which was the one my late friend Norman Barratt used when backing Cliff for his Christian Rock concert, it had one of the best compressors in it. Cheers Pete

Hi, I listened to his sound and although it’s a good sound it’s not an accurate representation of Hanks sound, if you listen there is a lot of compression on the biting of the strings. There is nothing wrong with that as such, Mark Nophler uses it by the bucketful but it’s a more modern sound feature in my opinion. I use lots of compression on my set up when not playing Shadows music, using an old Boss Me5, the closest I have heard is by suaragitar, very authentic but then again this topic can be never ending, check out Gary Taylor also. Roger Baylis, I use one on my AC30 and very good indeed, in fact used it last night at our first Gig in 19 months, I think I will be investing in Charlie’s EF86 also, I use the H&C and it’s fabulous. I think mine was originally put together by Roger Alcock but not 100% sure, what I am told is he no longer produces them, no doubt I will be corrected if that not be the case. Peter

In my opinion, I have found that keeping things simple is the best way, all these gadgets, switches, knobs, aircraft landing lights have to be paid for, it’s better to spend the money on the quality, we’re it’s needed most. Being a once HI-FI nut, you could tell a good amplifier, it had On & Off switch, treble bass, Volume, that was it. Pete

Hi Rob, Yes, been there bought the shirt and all that and as you say, worked brilliantly but I was in a Rock/ jack of all trades scenario but once I went back to Shadows music and needed that negative feedback situation, it all changed, just couldn’t get the biting pure clean sound I wanted as all the other pedals had their influence on the sounds even when switched out. The thing is, they were in the chain and that was the issue. By the time it got to my guitar, the signal, it had come from lands end to John o groats. I think possibly it’s a personal thing, for me the shorter the signal travel the better. Pete

Hi Frank, Yes, interesting, I never liked CD reproduction of sound, in comparison to vinyl, the reason being that CD was ‘converted sound‘. I heard a comparison with Linn LP12 Quad set up and the same with CD, CD was nowhere near the same quality, so in that, anything that has to convert the original sound, Zi have shy’d away from. My AC30 has the Roger Alcock EF86mod, not sure if this is what you have but Im happy with the results from it. Think you can get a reasonably close sound with lots of add on equipment but it’s one h..l of a job trying to eq it all and at that just for one tune. It is a never ending saga with regard to sound relating to a certain shads track, for example, we have all the echoes etc in each patch on the q2 H&C and in a live sirptuation we are still compromised but then again, so are the Shadows. Each track was eq’d at Abbey rd studio using the possibly same equipment we have, so you see in a live set, we can’t eq every track we play, we just generalise the sound but it’s still damm good?

I find that running pedals via effects pedal board, affects the sound greatly and thus you Have to EQ everything On your Amp accordingly. For Shadows, I go from AC30 to H&C then Guitar in the chain. I find when I add other pedals, I loose quality in tone, for me the purerthe signal, the better, it’s similar to HI FI theoretically, the more in the chain, the signal breaks down further, hence good quality leads to help with the travel. Hi Steph, It will be a very long wait, If waiting for the virus to disappear, the flu hasn’t and we have had that for centuries 😂 I am not confident the government will get rid of it, it didn’t bother getting rid of the flu, just appeasing it with vaccines. I am Sure we will be through this come some point next year but only in the sense of it being manageable, through common s3nse and medication and hopefully a return to what we deem normality. Happy shads playing Peter Ps: I hope I have not crossed the line here on the political front, as wasn’t intended, all the best to everyone and keep safe.

Hi Baz, It’s a great feeling to have something restored like that, yes the AC30 is giving Stirling service but a while sinceI last used it in earnest, re lockdown, myself and the Band can’t wait to get together as soon as we get the all clear. Are you still playing the guitar? Rgds Peter

Hi Andy, Agree, until you put the shads record on then you were back to square1 😂 Very frustrating back in copycat days, most folks fell for it but real shads fans who knew the sound ‘ahh it’s not quite the sound mate but it’s passable’ Peter

Hi Baz, Nice to hear from you, I hope you are keeping well. Yes, I definatly like the valve version but the one I used was getting rather old and was a bit noisy as a result, so had to use the silver solid state wem copycat. Copycat’s behaved themselves if you kept the heads clean, they soon got mucky and the tapes wore out too.

Hi Mathew, The Copycat, definatly not like a Meazzi. The Cooycat was what most of us used in Clubland back in the 60s & 70s, you always got that clickety click with them, I Used both the valve version and solid state silver top by Wem. In my opinion the valve version sounded better to my ears but perhaps the later model more reliable. I did an A&B comparison test with the Watkins copycat and Magicstomp with EFTP, the Magicstomp way way way ..... better, more convincing, in my opinion. Peter

Hi Steve, Yes, agree on the whole they crammed a lot into the hour which is certainly jot long enough to do real justice. I get frustrated with Hank when he’s talking about ‘ that sound’ when he’s in a scenario with a guitar set up. He was the same on Jules Holland, just has a bit of reverb or slight echo, you would think he would at last for a documentary he would have the TVS3 set up with a haunting sound, to get his message across so to speak. The tributes were good, especially Dave Gilmore, They are now getting on in years for sure but what legends they are.
