Duncan I've clicked on tools in IE9 but can't find the Compatibility view settings. Andy IE8 works perfectly without any further setting adjustments. I'm using Win 7 Pro x64 on 3 computers I have access to and the same problem happens on all three, so its something introduced by the IE9 update. I have tried Firefox before, gave it about two weeks but didn't like it. I also use a spell checker called iespell, it still works in IE9 but normally if it finds a mis-spelt word, the word is highlighted, now with IE9 this no longer happens. I'll stick with IE8 for now Glen

Hi Andy
I upgraded from version 10.1 to 10.2 (something) but unfortunately it made no difference, even after rebooting the computer. I could find nothing else on the internet about this so out of desperation I un-installed IE9 and went back to IE8 - now everything is back to normal within 4shared.
I find it very annoying why companies such as Microsoft 'fiddle' with settings that invariably screw something up in their customers computers.
Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
Glen

Hi,
I have recently (couple of weeks ago) signed up to 4Shared so I could post a sound file, also Internet Explorer 9 decided to install itself on my computer. I don't know if these are just coincidence but now when I try to listen to a sound file posted on 4Shared it no longer gives me the opportunity to just press the mp3 'play' arrow, I now have to download the mp3 to here it.
Anyone else having this problem, I've checked the IE9 security settings and all seem to be normal.

Hi All
Can anyone recommend a Shads CD that gives a good representation of their early sound, without being 'doctored' too much during re-recording.
I've listened to a few Youtube video's of very early stuff but the sound quality is not that brilliant. One video is when the Shadows played on the kids program Crackerjack - I hated Crackerjack so must have missed it first time round !!

Many thanks for your help I was aware Bruce used acoustic for recording, thats one of the benefits of being a member of this great forum for so long I'll try a touch of reverb to colour the sound slightly. Thanks again Glen

Hi
I am trying to play the rhythm parts to a few Shadows midi tracks, i.e. just bass and drums. I have noticed from various videos Bruce normally uses the middle pickup when playing his Strat.
Does he 'generally' use any effects when playing ?

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I've never been able to get into it.
Tried it just now and it says the server is down

Can anyone recommend a good Instrumental Internet Radio station. I have just downloaded the iTunes software and found it has loads of radio stations in its radio section but couldn't find a Instrumental section.
I'm mainly interested in guitar instrumentals such as those loaded in our sound files section, not necessarily just Shadows.
Thanks, Glen

Hi
I have been listening to some of the UB Hank backing tracks and many have the rhythm part played using an acoustic guitar, but what I noticed was there appeared to be two slightly different rhythm tracks playing from the left and right speakers as if the rhythm track has been recorded twice.
I then listened to some free backing tracks I downloaded from the internet and these had a similar effect.
As I know nothing about professional recording, can anyone tell me if this is a standard practice, double-tracking the rhythm part especially if its played by an acoustic guitar ?
I'm hoping to do some recording myself using only the bass and drums of midi files, so this knowledge would be useful.
Thanks, Glen

This is definitely one of the friendliest forums I belong to. Practically everyone is willing to help if you have a problem or just a question. I haven't seen anyone moaning or grumbling about anything for a very long time, its a real credit to the way its run. Thank you Charlie Glen

OK, thanks Charlie. One of my big dreads is turning on the Q2 one day and finding the backup battery has failed and I've lost all your echo's Glen

Hi Charlie
Is the Q2 backup battery kept in a charged state if the Q2 is permanently plugged into the mains with the switch on (mains, not the Q2 switch). I have just been looking at the invoice for my Q2 and you fitted a backup battery during Sept 99. That seems an awfully long time for a backup battery to last, and it still appears to be going strong ?

Fenderibo
I downloaded a few of those patches really out of interest. I don't use them for Shads stuff as I have a Q2 with Charlies echo's and use the Pod for amp simulation very similar to how Gary described.

You will get better results using the effects loop on the X3. This is worth considering to get the best out of both. Unfortunately I have the X3 Bean which doesn't have an effect loop like the X3 Live. Glen

Hi Gary
Yes I discovered Pod Farm when it appeared in the Line 6 Monkey setup program. The Pod X3 (bean shape) currently has a software driver problem with Win 7 x64 where the audio will suddenly cut out, very annoying while playing to a backing track. Because of this audio cut out problem I have been using Pod Farm with Cubase through my other USB sound card (Tascam US-144) rather than through the Pod, at least until they come up with a new driver, the Pod just acts a dongle for Pod Farm.
I sometimes record direct from the Q2 into Cubase then add Pod Farm to one of the inserts, as you say you can then play around with Pod Farms amp simulation and effects while the track is playing, very useful. I did try the demo version Guitar Rig 4 but found the AC15 / 30 emulation no better than Pod Farm.

Hi Tony I have the guitar (or CS3 if used) to the Right Mono Input of Q2 then Right Output to Guitar Input of Pod, so a fairly conventional in line setup. I suspect the problem is within the Pod, as you say even the amp simulation has volume controls as well as the Pod hardware. Now its just a case of tweaking each control within the pod until I get the sound right - then leave it alone - my problem is I can't stop fiddling Glen

Hi George
Thanks for your help, but in my case I bought the optional power pack. Also I don't generally use the CS3 unless I need a bit more sustain. I'm getting the distortion without the CS3 in the chain so its proberbly what Charlie said, as I haven't fully mastered the X3 controls yet I may have an input turned up too high.

Hi
I'm having a few problems with sound distortion through my setup chain. If I turn all the components down it disappears, but this got me thinking what is the correct way to set volume on various units within the chain.
My current setup is Guitar - CS3 Comp/Sus - Q2 - Pod X3 - US144 USB sound card - Cubase. Each unit in the chain has a volume control including the amp simulation in the Pod. I don't often use the CS3 but included it as an example of another volume control within the chain.
Is there a correct method of setting volumes in a chain ?
Thanks, Glen

Can I first apologise for not coming back on this thread and thanking you for your comments on the question I asked above. I'm always grateful when someone takes the trouble to help me out.
Can I ask one more question on this subject. As a general rule with The Shadows recordings, where would the following tone controls be set to on a amp or amp simulator as a percentage i.e. 0 - 100%.
Bass - Mid - Presence - Brilliance
These are the tone controls on my Pod X3 AC15 amp. I appreciate there are lots of variable here depending on the hardware used, but where 'in general' should they be set as a starting point for most Shads songs.

Hi Guys
I have bought a Pod X3 for AC15/30 simulation for recording into Cubase. I have finally found a setting that I am reasonably happy with in the Pod.
Now the question, do I leave this setting and rely on Charlies Q2 echo's for the different tune sounds or do I need to tweak the amp simulation for each tune.

I notice some people add a little reverb to their sound files. Is there any type of reverb that sounds better with the Shadows style of playing i.e. Spring, Plate etc. I use Cubase 5 for recording plus either a Pod X3 or Tonelab LE for amp simulation, all of which have various types of reverb available, but I never know which type to use.

In a music forum recently (can't find it now) a guy was having a problem with the recorded sound of his guitar and somebody recommended turning the volume control of his guitar down as it should never be as max. I have never heard of this before, the controls on my HM Sig Strat are always turned fully clockwise.
Just wondering if this is correct, should the volume knob, not be at max for any technical reason.
