Thanks Graham exactly what I was looking for In my ongoing quest to get a sound I am happy with (not necessarily Hanks sound) I have bought a Pod X3. I was trying to get hold a Pod XT but they are hard to find from my local dealerships and the X3 was only slightly dearer than the XT. I now have both a Tonelab LE and the Pod X3. I think the AC15 amp simulation is slightly more usable on the Pod than the Tonelab, both are good but the Tonelab has a weaker AC15 sound in my opinion. Thanks again Glen

Hi
Can anyone who uses a Pod XT or X3 offer a general setup for Shads type amp simulation. I appreciate it will be a AC30 / 15 amp and cab, but I just need some basic amp settings plus any other effects like compression or reverb that you find enhances Charlies echo's, I'm using a Q2.
Thanks
Glen

Graham / Martyn Thanks for your comments, the PodXT sounds interesting. Now do I go out and spend more money, I don't really have, chasing that sound or do I settle for what I already have Glen

Hi Martyn
I too am currently using a Tonelab LE which to my ears is ok but I feel I'm still missing something.
Which PodXT do you use, the desktop (kidney shaped one) or the floor unit. Do you know if they both have the sound you describe ?

Please forgive my ignorance but what Pickup set does the FS-1 belong to.

Hi Ian You make a very good point about the pickups. Some time ago on this forum some people were raving how good the 'Tonerider Vintage' pickups were for Hanks early sound and not knowing what was fitted as standard on the Jap HM Strat I thought I would give them a go. For what its worth I have a Burns Drifter with Kinmans fitted and they have a very similar sound - to my ears Phil Thanks for posting that sound file - its a lot closer to my sound than the track I was talking about. I have just spent the last two to three hours trying to copy as close as possible Hanks sound on the Apache track of 'The Shadows At Their Very Best' album. The reason I chose this track is because it says Hank used a Vox AC30 for these recordings. I have been using my Jap HM Sig Strat with Tonerider Vintage pickups, Q2 patch 16 and a Tonelab LE with Charlies Tonelab SE settings as a base. Although my sound is close I cannot get the richness Hank seems to get, my sound feels slightly thinner and lacks something (apart from Hank's playing ). Assuming Hank used a mic'd AC30 going to Dick Plants mixing desk, anyone know what Dick may have added to Hanks sound for the final recording. I know its a tricky question but i'm just curious. Glen

Hi Richie Thanks for the info I have both maple (or ash ?)and rosewood on my three guitars, someone on this forum advised using lemon oil on rosewood necks before so I went out and bought some, but thanks for the offer. Sorry just one more question - I bought the 'Rick Parfitt Rhythm Method' tutorial DVD recently and as a bonus track they showed his gear, his techy uses 'Finger Ease'. Can anyone here recommend it or not - I don't wouldn't want to stain the neck. Glen

Many thanks for your answers its most appreciated, looks like metal polish is a definate no no.
One quick question, I do infact use Fast Fret but how do you know when it needs replacing as the pad always seems to be dry even from new ??

As the title implies I was wondering if guitar strings can be cleaned with some kind of metal polish. I have noticed the G string on my Strat is looking quite dull compared to the B and E, also would this clog up the wound strings.
Any thoughts ?

Alan It still exists I downloaded it yesterday, here's the link www.nomadfactory.com/products/index.htmlThe Rock Amp Legends is at the bottom of the page. You have to go to Downloads to get an installer program then select 'Rock Amp Legends' from the list. It installed the VST straight into my Steinberg / VST Folder. Glen

Joachim / Alan
I have managed to download and install both demo's into Cubase as VST's so I can now start experimenting with both. The great thing about both these demo's they give you a full 30 mins to play around before shutting down but start immediately for another 30 mins.
Many thanks for the info

Hi Alan I have downloaded the Guitar Rid 4 demo its actually quite good, your not limited to a set number of days but it appears forever, up to 30 mins at a time, although some saves are disabled. Can you tell me what settings and components you use ? Tom Thats what I call advice when you even find one on the well known auction site for me - nice one Glen

Even with Charlie's fantastic echo's I can't seem to get the tone I am looking for. I currently use a Q2, G7.1ut, Tonelab LE, Acetone amp and my Jap HM Sig strat or straight into Cubase. I have also tried playing around with EQ but lack the skill to use it properly.
I have been looking at Guitar Rig 4 or Amplitube as they seem to have so many setting to adjust the tone, trouble is they are not cheap. Just wondering if anybody uses this kind of software when recording and can offer some advice.

Many thanks for the advice Charlie. I don't know why, but I had it in my head that tunes should be played up near the nut where possible. I'll now explore all the fretboard when trying to work out a tune Regards Glen

I am trying to learn a couple of tunes by ear. Is there any area of the fretboard which traditionally sounds better and I should concentrate on i.e. play near the nut or down towards the bridge.
The tunes are slow ballads and I am trying to use a general echo like 0.36 on my Q2.
Any advice appreciated

I also found this site about a year ago. www.guitarbackingtrack.com/ I assume everything is legal and above board otherwise I'm sure it would have been closed down. They do have 35 Shadows backing tracks but I must admit one or two do sound very much like UB Hank, 'Diamonds' for example. Glen

Hi Glen 'Spike' My mother apparently fancied Glen Ford the actor, thats how I became Glen with one N. My surname is Coyne, apparently there is an area in the lake district called Glencoyne, purely coincidental. Anyway many thanks for your comments on my original question. Although I love music and enjoy playing the guitar (not very well) I find it difficult to grasp the basics, like the makeup of a song or applying chords to a melody, even though I have studied the theory, and received help from this forum in the past. I'll just have to accept I am not a natural musician - I must have a talent somewhere I'll just have to find it Glen

Can anyone please help with this problem.
I am asking for some help with a problem I am having with Cubase on the Cubase.net forum and somebody has asked me to provide a link to a screenshot, but I don't know how to do this. I can provide a screenshot ok but the forum doesn't allow attachments. So is there a third party website where I could upload the screenshot and provide a link, I've never done this before.
Thanks Glen

I am trying to understand how a song, in general, is made up. I obviously understand Intro and Ending, but can someone please define Verse, Chorus and Bridge and what I should look for in a song to identify these separate parts .
Thanks Glen

Hi Les
Thats a good idea and worth considering, but I'm surprised there is not a kind of chord progression software, purely for rhythm guitarists who know what a F#m chord is but just need the correct chord sequence to a song. Most chords are included with tab or sheet music but it does mean having 4 or more sheets of paper propped up somewhere when just the chords could be condensed to one sheet.
John
Many thanks for your reply, but its not chord charts I'm looking for its more a chord progression sequence for a song, so I could have all the chords for say 'Atlantis' on one A4 sheet of paper. My old guitar teacher used to write chord sequences on the back of birthday and xmas cards. I was just wondering if there was anything a bit more professional for this purpose that fellow forum members may have come across on the internet.

If I'm playing the rhythm part to a song I need to read from sheet or tab music as to which chords to play i.e. C Am F Dm etc (not very good at playing chords by ear). As I need to condense this to one sheet of A4 paper I tend to write the chords into MS Excel - one bar per cell.
What I would like is to include a chord diagram at the top of the page of the chords I will be using in this particular song so Excel is not very convenient for that. Can anyone recommend some software that I could use to type out chords and have the diagrams at the top of the page - just the chords, not any notation or tab. As thats all I want to do I don't want to spend megabucks on expensive notation software.
Thanks Glen

Thanks for that piece of info, I didn't think of Audacity.
Your right, with the stereo track split and slowed down slightly, the drum rhythm is much clearer, I can even hear when the kick drum is played and the other instruments stand out more.

I have been trying for ages to create a midi file of the Tornados Jungle Fever but my big stumbling block is Clems Drum Rhythm which is basically the same throughout the tune, but can I get it right ! I have tried listening to the audio very slow but even that doesn't work, its almost as if its double tracked. The only other midi file available on the internet is totally different to how Clem played it. Oh well ....one day Glen

Charlie Having read many messages on this forum about EQ I still find it a bit of a mystery. I will just have to accept I will never make the grade as a sound engineer Joeboy From what you say it appears, even by accident, two sounds played together can improve the sound. I seem to have wrongly assumed this was common practise to have a delayed stereo signal when recording a lead, to add to the overall sound. I'm sure if it was more people would have jumped into this thread. Glen

I have just been listening to the sound file Oxygen IV by Phil McGarrick - very good it is too. He mentions adding extra delay for a more 'spacious' sound. I was just wondering if anyone else on the forum does this and could they give me any tips. I am using Cubase Studio 5 which has quite a few VST tools. When I record something to a backing track it doesn't seem to mix properly but sits outside the mix if you know what I mean.
Thanks

Charlie, John, Tony
Many thanks for putting me on the right track.
My playing style is so limited i.e. Shads that I didn't want to waste time studying scales I didn't need, for hard rock etc. As there are so many excellent players on this forum it was the ideal place to ask for advice and as usual I wasn't disappointed - many thanks again for your help. I will have to record a few chord sequences and try to improvise over them using the relevant major scale.
Regards
Glen
