Thanks Gary
That's one advantage of having the Helix Floor unit, it comes with a software editor that informs you when there is an update available.

Gary
I'm going to have to sit down and read this post through quite a few times to absorb the information you and Julian have offered.
Many thanks for starting this thread in the first place, you don't hear much about the Helix on this site normally especially with regard to the Hank Marvin type sound.
Again thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Hi Gary and Julian
Many thanks for the great advice using the Helix.
Your knowledge on this unit is way above my capabilities, I bought this unit to try and replicate the AC15/AC30 simulation as the reviews were very good. Unfortunately I don't have the 'sound engineer' talent of you guys, but reading the advice you have given has given me an insight into what to look for in creating the sound I'm after. I have also bought the 'Big Book Of Helix Tips and Tracks' which has a lot of useful information on using various Blocks and settings.
Ok back to my steep learning curve.
Thanks again

Hi Gary
Many thanks for you very informative guide, I found it very interesting.
I too have the Helix Native software but rarely use it because I seem to suffer with a small amount of distortion if I use the same settings from my floor unit which is normally distortion free. I'm careful to keep the input below -12 db with no yellow clipping and the output around -12 again with no clipping. I tried your settings with the AC15 - Kinky Boost - 2x12 Blue Bell cab and still got slight distortion without the input or output clipping, very annoying.
I was surprised to see your AC15 Mid at 0.0 as someone on another site told me Hanks sound is more dependant on Mid than Bass or Treble. I have saved your settings in Native and will use those as a base for my own setup.
Julian kindly sent me a few of his Helix patches which again gave me an insight into setting up the Helix for Hanks sound. I'll spend some time studying your settings and get back to you with some questions if that's ok. If you or Julian can think of any reason why I'm getting slight distortion with Native and no input clipping I would love to know. If I lower the input or output too much the volume suffers.

HI Gary
Many thanks for pointing out that video, very interesting.
Out of interest have you found a good setup with the Helix that gives you a good tone to use with one of Charlies echo units, I have the H&C and Q2. I have tries the Vox amps but feel it needs something else to give me Hanks modern tone, I'm currently using Kinman FV-HMS pickups.

Hi
I would like to try your patches.
I saw your post on the Helix forum and downloaded the Apache patch and found it very good. As I use Charlie's Q2 EFTP and H&C Echo unit I am more interested in the tone you use. Do you have a patch for Wonderful Land and Peace Pipe.

Hi
I know this question has come up in the past with regard to playing backing tracks.
As CD Players are now a thing of the past I am trying to store all my music CD's onto my computer. I'm currently using iTunes but find this a very clunky programme for example sometimes when ripping a cd one or two tracks are stored separately while the bulk of the CD tracks are saved into the album, I don't know why it does this ?
Can anyone suggest some other software that would achieve better results and store each cd as an album. I have both a Windows 10 PC and an iPad Pro, not sure which would be best.
Thanks Glen

I used to select Sound Files on this forum so I could see and hear the latest video's from Phil. He is a very talented player that gave me a great deal of inspiration for my own instrumental playing. I don't know what led to Phil's decision to abandon this forum but find it a very sad loss to lose his musical contribution to Charlie's fantastic forum.

Many thanks guys for all the good advice, much appreciated.
I've come to the conclusion (thanks to your input) that the Drifter is not worth trading in for a 'possibly' inferior product. I'm very happy with the Drifter as a guitar but it doesn't look like the instrument the Shads used. If Burns ever produce another 'quality' Legend in the future I may think again but at the moment I will stick with my Drifter.
Thanks again

Hi Steve Thanks for the links, very interesting. My Drifter is white, don't know if this is unusual as Mr Midgley says they came in Fiesta Red or Duck Egg Blue. The more I read about these guitars makes me more determined to keep my Drifter. How does the Burns Marvin on the Burns London website fit into the mix, is this a cheap Asian build www.burnsguitars.com/burnsmarvinlegend.phpGlen

Good point Len, I must admit it is a good looking guitar and sounds good. If the later non Custom shop Burns are not as good quality then I may as well keep the Drifter
That for your advice, Glen

Thanks for pointing that out, seems the custom shop version is no longer available and I won't be paying an inflated price for a collectors version. Can anyone give me any info on the current version sold on the Burns website.

Hi All
Can I have your advice please.
I bought a Burns Drifter from the UB Hank Club many years ago, it has gold hardware and Kinman pickups - don't know what type as they were already fitted to the guitar. I'm thinking of trying to trade this guitar in for a Burns Marvin Legend which looks more like the guitar Hank used.
Apart from reading the sales info on the Burns website I know nothing about the quality of this guitar. I'm trying to get some advice if its worth keeping my Drifter or going for the Marvin Legend regarding quality and sound ?

Anyone know if Bruce generally used any echo, as Charlie mentioned he may have used some Chorus Effect via the RE-301.
I am trying to add a Bruce (Rhythm) part to some old Shads midi files I have. Having looked at many YouTube videos, as Charlie also mentioned Bruce does use the middle pickup a lot of the time but there is little information of any effects between the guitar and Amp.
I read on another forum someone saying adding a little simple echo effect can make the rhythm part sound fuller.
Any advice welcome.

Just checked for myself, the 'Techie' is an idiot. The neck has the 'Gear-O-Matik' style Truss Rod - won't be going back there again in a hurry.
Thanks for putting me straight guys, I'll go back to Andertons in Guildford, always got excellent service there just a long drive to get there.

The problem is there isn't one fitted, which is my question, how common is this.
I have three other guitars Tokai, Fender and Yamaha all with Truss Rods but not the Burns ??

I took my Burns Drifter to a local Guitar shop to have the setup checked and adjusted if necessary. The guitar tech guy told me he was surprised there was no Truss Rod fitted so the neck couldn't be adjusted properly.
Is this normal ? I would have thought a Burns costing over £1000 (at the time) would have been fully adjustable.

Mike, many thanks for your answer.
I appreciate some songs may require double tracking to get a special effect, but I'm talking about normal recordings like Wonderful Land, Atlantis etc. would these also be D/T'd as a normal recording technique.

I have recently been Googling recording techniques, one thing that came up regularly was its a very common practice to Double Track a guitar part (or vocal) especially the Rhythm part, by this I mean recording the part twice, not just copying a track and panning it left and right. This apparently gives the sound a much wider and fuller sound than just a Mono track.
Does anyone know if Hank used this technique with his later (post 1970's) recordings or was it just a mono track ?

Dave, may thanks for those links. I haven't found the original receipt yet but I believe I bought this guitar in 1983/4, and reading the link you kindly supplied the TST-50 which I have, is considered a quality replica of the early Fender series. If I can convince the 'financial manager' I will definitely convert the pups on this guitar with one of the Kinman Hank Marvin variants. Just out of interest, I don't know what the wood is but its significantly heavier than my Japanese Fender. Glen

In my quest to choose between Kinman Impersonator 54's or FV-HMS (see my other post recently) for my Japanese 'Hank Marvin' Strat. I thought can I convince my other half it would be nice to buy both (she's the financial manager). The only other 'Strat' I own is a Tokai 'Goldstar Sound' serial number L25275, which is a copy of the early 60's Fender Strat which I bought new in 1984 from ABC Music, Addlestone if anyone remembers them. My question, are these guitars any good ? Due to an electrical problem I haven't used this guitar for about 10 years - is it worth spending £220 on Kinman pickups and solderless kit (another £70) ?? Glen Edit : just remembered I took this guitar to show Charlie when I bought one of the original EFTP Q2's, can't remember now what he thought of it

Many thanks for your feedback.
Having listened to many sound files from both Philmcg and Ian (sixchannel), they are both an excellent sound which makes it harder to choose one over the other. Although I like playing the older Shads tunes my main preference is Ballad style playing which might give the FV-HMS the edge. I have a set of 1998 vintage Kinmans in my Burns Drifter, but just had an e-mail from Kinmans this morning saying their pickup technology has come a long way since 1998.
Why is life never simple !!
