Hi Phil,
I thought that you mightn't be able to resist! Looking forward to hearing how it goes and how it compares with the plug-in.

Hi,
The CS Strats that Hank used on the 2009 tour all had gold Sperzels, as Rob said.

Hank has said they didn't use any Fenders in the early days.
Presumably, for people to keep bringing it up there must be some tunes that they think can't be reproduced on a Vox, I would be most interested if anybody could suggest some?

TVS 3

Hi Silvervox, The TVS3 is an echo unit designed to reproduce the sound of the early Meazzis and other vintage echo units used by The Shadows and other groups. It features an all tube (valve) dry signal path, analog echo delay lines and sophisticated emulation of the magnetic recording process. It can also reproduce cleaner echoes desired by many for a more modern sound. All of this is under digital control so that the echo settings for various tunes (as used by the Shadows, for example) can be simply selected and loaded immediately via patches. More information can be found at www.tvsspecialtyproducts.comRegards, Paul. Edit: Tim, our postings overlapped!

Hi Phil.
What a find, I'm jealous! Those pole heights are about the same as my CS54's.
How does it sound compared to your modern instruments?

Paul.

Hi, I get very close to the original sound using the bridge pickup for the main melody and the neck for the intro/outro, as shown in the demo on www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7fJnNa2m0g&feature=youtu.be A major contribution to the tone comes from the Top Boost channel with the bass and treble controls nearly fully on, with the top end calmed a bit with the Cut control. Some compression then completes the picture, Regards, Paul.

Hi Steve,
You said above "My intention next is to do a video using 5 different echo units at various parts of the song and see if anyone noticed the difference or can tell what each one is."
In my experience a montage is not a very sensitive way of comparing sounds. By that, I mean that a montage tends to mask the differences rather than highlight them, particularly where the montage does not have the various units playing exactly the same musical phrases. A better way is to do a direct A-B comparison (i.e. comparing the same section of the tune played through two units), using the same backing and being careful to have the lead sounds at the same level. This ideally needs to be done in the low, medium and high registers of the tune and also damped and undamped sections where they exist. If the intention is to see which unit can best reproduce the sounds of the Shadow's, then the A-B comparison should be between each unit and a section from the Shadows original recordings. Here using a Shadows-minus-Hank backing facilitates the direct comparison.
This is of course a lot more work and not everyone will be interested in this level of detail, so I guess that a montage might be an interesting first step.
Best Regards,
Paul.

Hi Alan,
I use the AC Tone after the echo and before the DAW, just as you would a real amplifier, and have never had a noise problem as mentioned by Ian. It does an excellent job emulating the AC30/Shadows sound on most numbers like Wonderful Land, Shadoogie etc, provided that the Mid and Voice controls are set accordingly to give the right amount of "grunt" while the Bass and High controls are used to trim the bottom and top ends. Drive gives distortion but I found that it struggles a bit where the original recordings had a lot of amp distortion (e.g. Theme from Giant) or some early ones that seem to have been recorded with a Goodmans loudspeaker in an AC15. By the way, Steve's Shadoogie was done with a TVS3.
Regards,
Paul.

Hi Phil,
Glad to hear that Ken Scott doesn't rate the RS124 plug-in very highly, I have it and found it very underwhelming!! The Nomad Factory Fairchild (LM662) seems to work very well though.
So, do you have space for one in your rack???

Paul.

Hi Robby,
Thanks for your kind comments.
The two new videos are caught up in the site transfer (which seems to be on again, off again just at the moment!), but it should all be sorted in a day or so. They will be in the Sound and Video section.
Best Regards,
Paul.

Hi Gerd,
Thanks for responding, we certainly respect people's opinions about equipment. However, the intended purpose of the announcement was to bring attention to the wealth of information on the site that could be of interest to the general Shadows community, whatever their equipment line-up or skill level. For example, how has Hank's change in playing style affected his sound, how different did the various echo units used by Hank sound, what is the difference in sound between flat and round wound strings, and so on.
That said we are currently experiencing a small hitch in the launch of the new site and it may be a day or so before the new site is fully up and running. We hope you can be a bit patient.
Paul.

Hi Michael,
Sounds like you are on the right track. It is not unusual for some of the old cracked carbon resistors to be way out of spec, particularly the anode resistors that can be way high (60% is not unusual), also the 12AU7 cathode resistors.

Paul.

Hi Michael,
Christopher is definitely on the right track, I wish I could have played that well at 12 years old!!
From what you have said so far, it seems to me that someone has tried in the past to increase the level of the recorded signal. This probably because many Long Toms barely have enough loop gain to cause regeneration (i.e. oscillation) when the feedback control is fully up. However, driving the record head harder will change the sonic quality significantly and, in my view, not the right way to go. When you have a schematic I would be happy to have a look and make some suggestions. It would also help if you could record the voltages at some key points, like B+'s and valve pins.
I am sure that there would be no problem with you posting the photos of the Sydney Shadows gig, the web is already awash with similar ones from other public appearances.
Best Regards,
Paul.

Hi Michael,
I have refurbished a number of Long Toms here on Australia (including those of Robby Januarsa and Adrian Browne) and would be happy to help out. There are often variations in the actual components used in these units and any of the circuit diagrams I have seen are at best only a guide. Ultimately you need to do whatever is necessary to get the best sound.

As I said I guess we hear things differently. I have played this version and the original side by side and to me Hank's lead in this version lacks the woodiness of the original and sounds hollow somehow. That may of course have resulted from the extraction process though Phil said he has tried to equalize it back to the original so it may also be a perception issue resulting from embedding it into the UBHank backing.
Paul.

My ears must be different to Charlie's and Erik's because to me the lead does not sound very close to the original at all. His style is unmistakable but the tone sounds different.

I deleted my post on use of the trem as I realized that had wrongly interpreted Charlie's comment as applying to Find Me a Golden Street (where there is extensive use) rather than 36-24-36. My mistake.

Hi Adrian,
The purpose of having the bass and treble both full (or very nearly full)on is that it produces a deep valley in the response at about 800 Hz, giving the very scooped Atlantis sound. As you say, this also gives a very bright sound and you need to bring the top down with the top cut control (I needed it nearly fully on). It is all part of the curious way that the bass and treble controls on the Top Boost AC30 interact with each other.
Regards,
Paul.

Hi Hubert,
Just to set the record straight, all echo data used in the TVS3 was determined entirely by myself from the original recordings. That said, I acknowledge that Charlie and I had a number of interesting interchanges some time ago and I trust that may continue into the future.

Paul.

Hi Steve,
Hank has made that mistake a couple of times. I fitted various pickups (including 57/62's and CS54's) to one of his guitars before he settled on the CS54's and subsequently had them fitted to his other two Strats. I guess he got a bit confused about the pickup identity during all the testing.

It was a shock to hear of the death of Jean-Claude; another Shadows fan and innovator sadly passed on. If you get the chance, please pass on the sympathies of all of us here at TVS to his family and friends on FDS.

Hi Julian,
Many thanks for your comments. You are quite right about the lack of Les Pauls in that photo. The one that I thought was a Deluxe (without close examination of the headstock) is in fact apparently a Roland guitar synth that Hank used in the '70's (feedback from Jim Nugent). I have since found a photo of him with a Deluxe and will make the correction in a update soon. I stopped short of bazookis and lutes!

paul.
