Hi All. As a shadows wannabee i wonder if somebody could point me in the right direction to get close to a sound i'm happy with?, i'm not very technical so please bear with me. I have a 50s classic vibe strat with a zoom g5 with charlies patches installed, then a caline cp-24 equalizer going into a Vox pathfinder 15R. I'm using Ernie ball rock-n roll super slinky which i know are maybe not the ideal string but struggle with anything else, so i'm fairly happy with the sound of the wound strings but the others have to much treble and sharpness. iv'e tried taming the treble back but just end up muddying the complete sound. Could anybody lead me in the right direction as to how to set up as i seem to be getting nowhere. thanks. John. OK.....go to main board, scroll down and click onto 'technical support'...then click on 'amps'....then click on 'general amp tone controls' There is a very detailed information from Charlie on amp settings for 'that sound'. Regards, Baz.

Hi all I'm new here and it's my first post, my name is Chris, and at best I'm a intermediate guitarist, BUT I'm enthusiastic. I'm looking to buy a Zoom multi effects pedal, and get Charlie's EFTP patches for it. So my question is twofold, which unit is best? and of course where do I get the patches from? thanks in advance High Chris, Welcome to the site. EFTP Patches are no longer available, Charlie stopped doing them because of piratesy. The only way to get them is if you buy a unit with them already installed. Before you buy any advertised unit get the serial number and check with Charlie that it is a genuine unit before you buy it. You will get some good advice from members on this site treading through this minefield. Regards, Baz.

Hi Charlie, Thanks for your comment, Yes I guess that’s pretty badly right and must admit I find myself doing this and the venue dictates how I set it. Cheers Hi Baz, Well, it’s still sounding great, I used it in a none Shads role on Saturday at a music festival backing up an EXFactor finalist and it delivered the goods, I get funny looks when other musicians see me using an old Boss Me5 but they are great, not found anything better for the Rock/varied music situation. Cheers Hi Pete, Glad to hear the Amp is still giving you good service.....it is a cracking Amp. Regards, Baz.

Hi everyone, A subject I haven’t seen covered here as to how we all have our settings/ EQ on our AC30, on normal channel and with the EF86 mod. Would be great to know, I am constantly re adjusting my settings, I’m using 56NOS Strat AC30/ EF86 mod and H&C. Great to here what people think is the best settings. Cheers Peter Hi Peter, That AC30 with the EF86 mod you got from me, I also fitted it with a complete set of matched valves for the clean 'Shadows Sound' as supplied by Derek at Watford Valves. Regards, Baz.

I had one of these pedals for a while and couldn't get on with it. I could do the up and down mode OK but the side to side movement and trying to play at the same time had me beat! Hi Tone, You need to practice rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time! Baz.

Bruce and Brian Bennett were both there watching the show.
As a left handed player I watched the lead guitarist closely....34346 wasn't 'restrung' for left hand, it was played totally upside down, a big plus for Bobby the guitarist.
Like myself being left handed, he probably also found it hard finding left handed guitars back in the day, so you learnt to play a few things 'upside down' just to try guitars in music shops.

Hi Baz, Hope your doing okay. Yes, that’s correct, I had wondered wether or not it was a psychological thing with it, thinking the sound was different using the AB box but I know it shouldn’t be. Our singer said my sound was thinner than usual but it could be that I didn’t alter the EQ as we had a rehearsal in a studio in the afternoon and got the sound pretty much nailed but when we played a spot in the pub n the night, it wasn’t the same sound I had in the rehearsal. All I did in the pub was alter my volume setting, I should have checked my EQ to make sure I had a fuller sound. As mad as it sounds, the folks in the pub said it sounded fabtastic but it just goes to show that us Anoraks only know the difference lol Hi Peter, Yes I'm doing OK thank you. As you have noticed EQ can vary in different venues, also what sounds good when the room is empty can sound a lot different when it's full of people! Glad to hear the Amp is still giving you good service. Regards, Baz.

Hi Peter,
I would keep the Amp volume higher than the AB volume because if you did it the other way round you could cause distortion by overloading the Amp input. It wont damage the Amp but if your playing Shads stuff you would want a clean sound.

Hi Baz I hope it is healing well !! ... How did you do that ... I ( don't laugh !! ) fell out of bed a week ago and bent my thumb right back , not broken but B****** sore !! I have just had a mail from Bill Skarratts and the club night has been moved to FRIDAY 6th August 7:30.
That may be difficult for me but I hope to be there.
Derek
My wife and I were in the Ferry Port on the Isle Of Wight when she tripped and fell knocking me over, resulting in the broken finger. It is healing ok, I have been having phisio at the hospital but it has been painful. I can play a bit on my Pedal Steel Guitar, but the six string is out of the question at the moment. Baz.

Dear All,
As the header says 'The Watford Shadows Club' will re-open on Friday the 2nd of October from 7pm to 10pm if anyone is interested. The Friday fixture is only temporary because the 'Bushy Sports Club' where we hold our club isn't open on Mondays and Tuesdays at present.
Please come and see what it is all about. You don't have to play, just come along have a beer, listen, and chill out.
Regards, Baz.

Hi Frank, Yes, interesting, I never liked CD reproduction of sound, in comparison to vinyl, the reason being that CD was ‘converted sound‘. I heard a comparison with Linn LP12 Quad set up and the same with CD, CD was nowhere near the same quality, so in that, anything that has to convert the original sound, Zi have shy’d away from. My AC30 has the Roger Alcock EF86mod, not sure if this is what you have but Im happy with the results from it. Think you can get a reasonably close sound with lots of add on equipment but it’s one h..l of a job trying to eq it all and at that just for one tune. It is a never ending saga with regard to sound relating to a certain shads track, for example, we have all the echoes etc in each patch on the q2 H&C and in a live sirptuation we are still compromised but then again, so are the Shadows. Each track was eq’d at Abbey rd studio using the possibly same equipment we have, so you see in a live set, we can’t eq every track we play, we just generalise the sound but it’s still damm good? Hi Pete, Nice to know the AC30 is giving you good service. Regards, Baz.

Next week I will receive the Double Neck Pedal Steel Guitar that I had made for me because I am left handed. It's took 7 1/2 months to build, that should be interesting trying to play that! Pity you couldn't do what Jimi Hendrix did and turn a right handed one upside down! Regards, Charlie If only Charlie.....It has been a very frustrating journey being left handed. Even in the early day's trying to learn chords that were all 'back to front' it was like looking in a mirror. Regards, Baz.

Hi Peter,
Glad to hear the Amp is serving you well.
Yes I bet you are 'champing at the bit' to get playing again....it gets a bit frustrating sitting about wanting to 'get going'.
I am still playing guitar at home with my dodgy hands, also playing more on my Lap Slide guitar at the moment because it's easier on my fingers.

Hi Baz, Nice to hear from you, I hope you are keeping well. Yes, I definatly like the valve version but the one I used was getting rather old and was a bit noisy as a result, so had to use the silver solid state wem copycat. Copycat’s behaved themselves if you kept the heads clean, they soon got mucky and the tapes wore out too. Hi Peter, Nice to hear from you and I trust the AC30 is giving you good service. Back in about 1980/81 I took my valve Copycat up to WEM's factory at the Oval in London where John Truba the Company Tech replaced all the heads and switches, input sockets etc while I was there watching so it ran as good as new. I still have all the old replaced parts. Yes you have to keep it maintained, head cleaning etc. Regards, Baz.

Hi Mathew, The Copycat, definatly not like a Meazzi. The Cooycat was what most of us used in Clubland back in the 60s & 70s, you always got that clickety click with them, I Used both the valve version and solid state silver top by Wem. In my opinion the valve version sounded better to my ears but perhaps the later model more reliable. I did an A&B comparison test with the Watkins copycat and Magicstomp with EFTP, the Magicstomp way way way ..... better, more convincing, in my opinion. Peter Hi Peter, The valve version of the Copycat is much warmer and better sounding than the solid state version. I still have a Mk2 valve Copycat and a solid state IC400 with a variable speed control.

Hi Rob, I've never seen a Framez or some of the Vox echos in real life. Only knew about them from them early Shadows days. I didn't even know the tape was half inch wide. Wonder how they mounted the tape in the very early days, would they have had double sided tape?. God, I have enough trouble just changing the tape loop in my Klemt Echolette, imagine trying to fit a loop around the Meazzi's etc, double sided tape would certainly make it easier. I think Binson solved the problem with their drum. Regards val I remember reading that Hank used to stick the tape on the drum with Vaseline.
