Hi Steve.......music theory will give you the intervals and notes of a scale........any others are passing note but if they are not dissonant can be used. Chords can have extensions formed by adding notes which are not in the key/scale of the chord they are used in. Take the classic "Purple Haze" E7#9.
Play through the chords of Sleepwalk in C........the Fmin is not in the C major chord sequence ...........but doesn't it sound sweet?
Modulating (as compared to a simple keychange of a semi or whole tone) from one key to another during a song is widely used.......Revisit some of Brian Wilsons clasics...God only knows: Warmth of the sun (exquisite)etc and Nick Kershaw uses modulation to great effect.

Covered by a huge number of artists but probably most well known by Dusty Springfield and the Atlanta Rhythm Section. As always I've used my BOSS BR 1200 CD which is "old hat" these days but still cuts the mustard I've used my G&L Comanche for all guitar except rhythm which is my Tele all via a BOSS DD500 delay pedal and a Roland Cube amp. Also used a Farida PB Bass and a Yamaha E323 K/board for piano and percussion. Hope you'll give it a listen. you may find improvising over the BT good fun as it uses the A minor blues scale almost exclusively. Baz SpookySPOOKY !! BT

Guitar via Roland Cube and Boss delay pedal. Instruments are Strat De Luxe, Telecaster, Farida Bass and Yamaha E323 k/board. Hope you'll give it a chance. Baz Valse d'hiver

Hi Sandra, Zoran, Van and Gus and thanks for your supportive comments.
I'm pleased with the composition but rather lost interest part way through and the final mix could be much better.
Given your comments I shall find time to revisit the track and attempt to post an improved version

Thanks Sandra.......without checking it on You Tube etc I guessed this would be the arrangement so its still not totally cable free if I use a pedal board........thanks again

If you normally use floor FX boxes, where does the transmitter for the guitar signal go?..............after the last pedal? ......in which case you must then still presumably have a lead from guitar to your pedal board
Thinking of using one but just trying to sort out the practicality first

The title indicates how I felt often whilst trying to get this together Recorded on my BOSS 1200CD using a variety of guitars (Strat deluxe, Tele, G&L.........), Farida PB style bass (best value for money I've ever come across) Yamaha E323 keyboard for piano, Synth and percussive FX........on board Boss drum machine. Hope you'll give it a listen. Regards Baz Give me Strength

Hi Pete......if your after a Hank B sound I guess the golds will suit although I see they now do an "origin" set. Just for comparison here a link to a track I posted using my strat with hybrid pups app.box.com/s/ypbuej8aycm2plrmtp5v Baz

Hi Pete..not used the "gold" but have their "hybrid" on a home built strat which I think not only sound great but are remarkable value for money.
You may find some demos on You Tube

to the best of my knowledge Ace (Chris) is still around although I've not heard of him playing in a current band. Trevor Burton heads his own blues band.
The last time I saw them was at the funeral of the original rhythm guitarist from the Vikings line up (as it was when I was a band member)

Carl and I lived about 300 yards from each other and went to Saltley Grammar School (Birmingham) where we joined a local band called the Vikings and became Carl Wayne and the Vikings. I left the band in 64 to get married and was replaced by Ace Kefford. Bev Bevan replaced the drummer and the basis of the Move was formed to be completed by the later addition of Roy Wood and Trevor Burton.
They "Moved" from another Brum band "Danny King and the Royals" and this was the basis of the name of the new band.

Anybody who has the slightest interest in great musicianship should try to get this whilst still on I-player. Originally broadcast Monday 22/8/16 Not all of it was to my taste but to hear a large group of diverse instruments played by professional musicians with such a coherent and tight performance is priceless. The session men (my assumption) on guitar, bass, drums and percussion were outstanding Baz

Not directly related but the drummer in one of the bands I gig with was (in the 60s)a member of London band Tommy Bruce and the Bruisers and in 63 they recorded (at Regent Sound Studios in Denmark Street) a demo of "I'll never get over you" which was to become a hit For JK &the Pirates. Don (McGinty) now lives in Stratford on Avon and says the only clear recollection he has of the day was having a bacon'n'egg sarnie brought in at breakfast. Rock n Roll lifestyle !!!!!!!!!!

This is my own BT taken a gnat's todger slower (4 bpm) than the original and with my own take on the "instro" break of the original. I,m still using my trusty BOSS BR1200 to lay down individual tracks and then transferring the final mix to Audacity for polishing touches and conversion to hi-res Mp3. Instruments used are :- Accoustic guitar...Babicz Identity Electric guitars........both Fender De-luxe Strat (noiseless pups) and G&L Comanche via ROLAND GX80 Bass.......Farida PB Keyboard....Yamaha 323 used for strings and percussive FX Drum track..........created on the Boss using the in-built drum machine software Please feel free to use the BT if you wish. Steve............if you check my back threads you'll find that I've posted quite a number of my own instrumental compositions. I've also written several "songs" (i.e. with vocals)but not posted them on Charlies'.
There are many different ways to go about and you'll end up finding your own method but one I use more often than not is messing around with chord progressions (as you are yourself) and then finding a rhythmic pattern and tempo that suits. I know that Jeff Lynne and the brothers Gibb wrote all their monster hits in this way.
I've got a book entitled "the mechanics of songwriting...a guitarists guide" by Leo Coulter, published by Siduri Books which is well worth its cover price of around £15.
Then you've got guys like Tony Lowe (Tolo) who posts amazing compositions on these pages and whose method sounds from his description to be be more "emotionally" and concept driven. If you've not listened to any of his threads you should check them out.
I wish you success but be prepared for a considerable amount of indifference from many of the forum users who will not want to stray too far from their Shadows favourites (and other popular well known oldies).
Regards
Baz
PS....if you find my threads history and scroll down to "Long Ago" you'll find a song which did get quite a good response and which I think demonstrates the approach I use. When you get something you're pleased with you will get quite a buzz from it.
