Has anybody used a Seymour Duncan Woody pickup on their acoustic guitar. I’m looking for something to use with my Taylor Big Baby, hopefully without hacking it about, and this seems like it might be worth considering.

Out of interest, how much pick do you have showing when you play? I’ve a feeling I’m holding it wrong with a lot of the tip showing which is leading to my difficulty with the Apache gallop. I’m aware it’s a personal thing, but just wondered anyway.
Thanks, Tim.

Thanks for all the advice. I eventually used a Scotchbrite pad. Lovely smooth neck now.

The neck on my 50s Classic Vibe Strat is a high gloss. I often find when playing it’s hard to get a smooth slide as the neck feels sticky, especially as I tend to have very warm hands.
Does anybody else have this problem, if so how do you get round it. I have thought of gentle wire wool to matt the neck, but that’s a bit permanent or possible dusting with talc, which appears very difficult to buy.

Phil,
To be honest, I now use the following set-up. Backing Tracks are played on a really old XP laptop using a program I wrote. The O/P from this laptop goes into the AUX IN on my VT20+. My Strat goes through a BOSS volume pedal then a Zoom G1Four then into the VT20+. I then use a splitter out of the Headphones/Line Out, one going to my headphones, the other through an iRig HD2 into my iPad for recording.
I’ve found this is the simplest, least complicated set-up I’ve found that suits me. 90% of the time I play through my headphones. I’m only in a small room, but I have swapped the headphones for some speakers before now and they worked fine, I just prefer headphones now.

Phil,
When I had a similar set-up I used the line out from my VT20+ into one of the channels on my mixer. I tried micing it up, but wasn’t convinced it was any better.

Well after a 12 month break when I haven’t touched my guitars, let alone play them, I’ve finally picked my Strat up again and ready to play.
No real reason for the break, just seemed to lose my interest in playing. I guess it happens to most of us from time to time.
Luckily my set-up was just as I left it and everything worked first time. Now just to select a few easier Shadows/Hank Marvin numbers to get me back into playing and harden my fingertips back up.

I noticed on the Hank Plays Live DVD, he has a fairly substantial pedalboard. You can definitely see him using it during Sacha.

Have to admit I would go with Len’s suggestion of a VT20+ if you can find one. I use one and must admit that once you’re used to dialling in the tone it’s a great amp.

Ask them to post a link to their YouTube channel where they’re obviously playing better than you. That generally shuts them up.

Just restringing my nylon acoustic for the first time since I bought it, probably 7-8 years ago, and it occurred to me it doesn’t have fret markers. A casual browse of classical guitars in some of the on-line shops show most of them don’t have fret markers.
Just musing as to why?

Now that I have more time on my hands I’m playing, and enjoying it, more. One thing I’ve always struggled with is fast picking, like the Apache gallop or the start of Atlantis. This has made me look at how I hold the pick. Really up until now I’ve just picked it up and played, never really giving it a thought. I think one of my problems might be having too much of the point showing, and I think I may hold it at an angle pointing slightly up.
Any advice on how to hold it, and how much pick do you have showing.
Thanks, Tim.

I’ve always thought so but can’t be certain I’ve always wanted to have a go at it but someone would have to do a backing track You can get a Backing Track for this song on Karaoke Version. Tim.

I’m sure most people know this already, but just in case. Ken Bruces guest on his Tracks of my Years spot on Radio 2 this week is Bruce Welch OBE.

Does anybody know if there is a BT available for Hanks version of Sound of Silence from Marvin at the Movies. I had assumed it would be on Marvin MasterTrax, but it isn’t. Would prefer just a single track, if possible, preferably on download.

Are the videos being taken down or disabled in some way? Or, are you just getting messaged?

Mick
Thanks for the heads up on these. I’ve just ordered myself a set. Hopefully with these and a new set of Elixir strings my playing ‘might’ improve.

Out of interest I assume you put the EQ unit between the Echo and Amp.

Kerry,
Haven’t used ToneBridge, but I do use ToneStack on my iPad for all my playing and recording of Shadows/Hank Marvin. It’s one big advantage is a multi-tap echo. Its worth having a look, there's a free version, then you can buy other bits as IAP’s.

I think the G3X has been discontinued and I don’t believe that ***’s echoes are suitable for it’s replacement .

As far as I understood it, ***’s echoes work for the original Zoom G3, which is now discontinued, but not the current Zoom G3n.
But I may be wrong.

So far, I’m very impressed.

Hi Phil,
Sorry to hear the sad news. It was his version of Sleepwalk which spurred me on to learn it. It’s still one of the nicest versions I’ve heard.

I should have one of these arriving in the next couple of days. On scouring this, and other, forums I have found some settings to try for classic Shadows sounds.
Does anybody use one for modern Hank sounds, if so, what settings do you use.
Looking forward to trying it after hearing some of the soundfiles.
