Hi Steve,
Sorry, yes it does work in landscape mode, it just looks better in portrait.
It's great to hear that there's an iPad version in the pipeline.

Hi Both,
I have used that One Track Mind, but find One Track far superior, plus the Airturn support is an added bonus.
I think the reason it gets missed is it doesn't come under iPad apps on the App store as it's optimised for the iPhone, but works fine on the iPad.
Cheers, Tim.

Although I now tend to use JamUp/Bias for most of my playing. There are still times I use my other gear, also my wife plays violin, so I wanted a good backing tracks player on my iPad.
After a bit of investigation I can recommend 'One Track' as a great piece of kit. It's a bit more expensive than others I looked at, but the features it contain make it well worth it.
You can create your own setlists on the fly, not just use iTunes playlists. Start, stop, pause tracks. When one track finishes in a playlist, the next track is loaded, but waits until you start it. It has a 'performance' mode which would be great for playing live.
The other plus for me was that it can be controlled from the Airturn BT-105 pedal.
The only downside is that it's not optimized for the iPad, so has to be used in 'portrait' mode.
All in all though a great bit of kit.

I've used it a lot. It's great if you have a music score, but can't quite work it out.
Just put the notes in, and play it back.
Has helped me on a number of occaisions.

Bought my 50s classic vibe from Andertons.
This was the first time I had bought online. Couldn't have been more pleased with their service.
Guitar arrived when they said, no damage and ready to play.

Hi All,
I've been play Shadows music for around 5 or so years now, mainly from tab. I started playing instrumentals as I can't sing at all, I really wanted to play Blues, but love the Shadows stuff I can play.
Having recently found backing tracks for lots of my favorite blues songs WITH vocals has set me off on a new direction.
However, this time I want to do it properly. I' m learning pentatonic scales, moveable chords, the CAGED system.
It's like starting again, and at 58 has given me renewed interest in my playing. My wife even let me buy a PRS SE custom as a present.
Guitars...... Is there any better instrument.
Tim.
PS. I'm not giving up on Hank and the Shadows, just trying to add another string to my bow.

Hi Amanda,
Hope you get well soon.
Had the same happen to me last year. Made full recovery, and changed lifestyle for the better.
All the best,
Tim.

Hi All,
Probably one for Charlie.
Is there a difference between delay and echo, if so what is it.
Just curious really.
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for all the advice guys, after the 1st few replies I decided to bite the bullet and ordered online from Andertons.
I am now looking at a lovely Fiesta Red Strat. Came promptly, well packaged and lots of contact from Andertons.
Well that's 2 strats I have now, but only this one in Fiesta Red.
I'll have to get something different for my next purchase.
I've already mentioned to the better half that I really regret selling my Honeyburst Epiphone Les Paul last year.
Perhaps that will be next.
Was there ever a guitar you regretted getting rid of?
Many Thanks,
Tim.

Hi All,
I was looking to get a Fender Classic 50s Strat in Fiesta Red. On ringing round my local shops (within 30-40 miles), no-one had one in stock.
I am now wondering whether to buy over the Internet from one of the reputable dealers (Dawsons, Andertons, GAK), who all have stock.
What have been your experiences of buying guitars on-line, good, bad or indifferent. Would you recommend it, or shall I hang on until local dealers have stock back in.
Thanks, Tim.

Noel,
Have been eagerly awaiting this update, both for the fix and the recorder.
As fate would have it, it's been released whilst I am sat in a caravan down in Dorset. No guitar, no wi-fi (3G only), no sun but a biting cold wind.
In some respect it will be nice to get back to download it and try it out.

Hi Goran,
I've also been dabbling with my iPad. I'm currently using JamUp Pro. There is a Roland RE-201 Space Echo on there I have bee trying out.
You seem to be getting some great sound out of garageband though. I would be interested to know what settings you used for your demos.
I also subscribe to the Hank Marvin Sound & Technical forum, there are a few of us on there trying out the iPad.
I personally believe it's the way to go, and will only get better and better.
I'm surprised you haven't seemed to have more interest in this thread.

As Hank was using these units around the time you say. Would that be the unit used on Hank Plays Live?
I am currently playing around with JamUp Pro on my iPad, and this has a Roland Tape Echo sim.
I would guess that it would be possible to play the older number from that set with the modern sound if that's the only echo unit Hank was using at the time.

Tony,
Happens to us all at times. I wanted to print some tabs off last week, but couldn't get the printer on. Went through all the checks, finally assuming that the printer had expired and I would have to buy a new one.
Felt totally embarassed when I found I hadn't plugged the mains cable into the wall socket.

Dionne,
My system uses MIDI to change the patches, I don't believe that the Zoom unit you are using supports MIDI.

Hi Dionne,
I think that I am probably using a similar set-up to what you want.
Currenly I use a Kustom KPM4080 mixer/amp. This is rated at 80W, and is more than enough for home use.
My signal chain is:- Fender Strat/Burns Marvin into Behringer AB200 Dual A/B switch. This allows me to select both input guitar and output path.
One O/P goes through a Zoom A2 Acoustic Sim, then into the KPM4080 Channel 1.
The other O/P goes through a Boss ME-50, then a Zoom RFX2000 with EFTP and finally a Behringer V-Amp 2. This the goes into Channel 2 on the KPM4080. I decided against using any amp, as I find the V-Amp 2 gives some really nice simulations.
This leaves 2 channels free if needed (mic, acoustic guitar, etc.).
My backing tracks are all on a laptop which is connected to the Tape In on the KPM4080, it also changes my patches on the RFX2000 and V-Amp2 by sending MIDI messages.
I went through various set-ups before deciding on this, and have been pretty happy with this one.
There in even a Record Out on the KPM4080 which I have hooked up to a Tascam DP-004 to do some recording.
Just remember to kep the volume down and you won't be disappointed.
Hope this helps,
Tim.

Hi All,
Does anybody know what Hank's equipment line up was on the Hank Plays Live DVD/CD.
I am trying to play Live and Let Die, but can't seem to get the correct sound on the 2 overdriven parts.
I am using a Zoom 2000 with EFTP and a V-Amp 2, so can get a pretty good sound for the rest of the song, but just can't nail the overdrive sounds.
Many Thanks,
Tim

I am looking to build a pedalboard. However, I want it to be batttery powered as I want to use it where there may be no mains. I already use a Vox DA5 as an amp and am happy with the battery life it has.
However, I find that my Zoom 508 pretty much eats PP3 batteries. The other problem is , I sometimes forget to disconnect the cable, so leaving the effect switched on, also once on a pedalboard it will be awkward to keep changing the batteries.
I am using a BOSS Acoustic Simulator, BOSS Blues Driver, Passive Volume pedal, and a Zoom 508. I reckon total battey drain to be around 80 - 100ma total. I have thought about connecting a couple of PP3 batteries in parallel, but this would probably only give around 300 - 350maH.
I am considering using 6* C or D type batteries, these give around 2500maH so should last longer.
My idea is 2 sets of these through a switch to allow one set to be on standby if the other set runs out. Then feed the output via a daisy chain cable to my effects pedals 9V in socket.
Has anybody done anything like this before, or can see any problems.
Thanks,
Tim.

Mike, I had the same thoughts a while ago. I wanted to use a footswitch to control the selection and starting/stopping of my Backing Tracks.
I couldn't really find anything suitable, so I wrote a program myself in Visual Basic to do it. I have just added a MIDI control to this so when you select a Backing Track it changes the patches on my Zoom RFX2000 and V-Amp2.
It took a while to do, but now works fine and saves me having to walk the 2ft across the bedroom to change patches.
Hope you find what you are looking for.
Regards,
Tim

Hi Roger,
Bill's reply is absolutely correct, you can download and install Microsofts Visual Basic 2008 for free.
I am currently doing my development on a Windows XP laptop running Visual Basic 5. This is mainly becuase this laptop is dedicated to my music, and only has on it the minimum software required.
The footswitch is the one that came with my Behringer V-Amp2. There are 2 switches and a TSR jackplug connection. I bought a Vellman USB interface board from Maplins to connect to my laptop. It's a bit of an overkill as it has 5 I/P, 2 analogue I/P and 8 O/P, but it does the job. I may build a custom footswitch later to allow more control.
My current project is to now get the application to talk to my V-Amp2 and Zoom RFX2000 via MIDI to automatically changes patches depending on the song. I have never used MIDI before but have got a USB to MIDI cable (Maplins again) and have trawled the internet for info.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Tim.

Roger,
I found exactly the same problem. I overcame this by putting all my Backing Tracks onto my laptop. As I'm in IT, I then wrote a program in Visual Basic/Access which allows me to select the required track. Once selected, the program displays which Echo/Amp patch to use.
I have a footswitch which connects through the USB connection into the laptop so i can start/stop the track, and scroll through the track list.
I am currently looking at making the program now send the relevant patches to my Zoom RFX2000 and V-Amp2 via midi, so it's all automated.
This probably doesn't help you, but it does show that there is probably a niche market for such a product.
Hope you found it interesting.
Tim.

Levels
Jan 5, 2010 16:21:44 GMT
Post by timryland on Jan 5, 2010 16:21:44 GMT
Hi All,
First time i've really posted here, but I'm sure i will get some help.
My current set-up is a Strat and Burns into an A/B switch, then a Boss ME-50, then Zoom RFX2000, then a V-Amp2, then a Behringer 1202FX mixer (which I mix in Backing Tracks from a program i've written on my laptop which allows song selection, then shows relevant amp/echo patches) and finally to a pair of powered speakers.
My question is as most of these units have a 'level' control, so where is it best to adjust it, or doesn't it matter.
At the moment I set my guitars to around 6 so there is some control, then the A/B and ME-50 to max, the RFX so it's just peaking. I set the speakers to max and do the final tweaks in the mixer.
Does this sound reasonable, as I find i'm constantly trying to balance the volume with around 5 or 6 different controls otherwise.
Hope this makes sense.
Tim.

Charlie,
Thanks for the reply. Ihave now bought the unit and tested it and everything seems fine. I have e-mailed you regarding getting the EFTP patches.
Is it possible to program these in manually, or do I need to get the USB/MIDI connector?
Thanks,
TIm.

Hi Keith,
I have had some quite good results by feeding my guitar & effects into a Behringer Xenyx 1202FX mixer. I feed my backing tracks into this as well. The main out goes to my monitors, and the CD out to the line input of my laptop which is running Audacity 1.2.
Once you get all the levels right, I have had some good results with this. The only downside is that you have to do it all in one take.
Hope this helps,
Tim.

Charlie,
I currently use a Zoom 508 (EFTP) into a V-Amp2. I have been thinking about getting a Zoom G2.1 to replace the 508/VAmp combination. This is mainly because I feel the 508 feels a bit flimsy when changing patches, also it will save having the 508 and a separate volume pedal on my pedalboard. I use a Zoom A2 for my acoustic work and have been quite pleased with it.
However, on a visit to my local 2nd hand store, they had a Zoom RFX-2000 for sale at £35. Would it be worth going for this in your opinion, or would I be better sticking with my original intention of getting a Zoom G2.1.
Many Thanks,
Tim Ryland.
