Mick,
Sorry for the confusion. ToneStack is an amp and effects simulator. You use it instead of your analog effects and amp. It just happens to be able to play BT's so you can practice along to and record.
For a dedicated BT player look on the App Store for One Track by Sean Bergin. There is a free version you can use to evaluate it.

Hi Mick, This is the stand my iPad is mounted on in the picture. If you do not already own an iPad, you probably don't need the latest, fastest to run Backing Track. The one in the picture is my old iPad2 which worked fine. One thing to remember is put it in Aeroplane mode to prevent any unwanted interruptions. Hi Mick. I use an iPad for everything. I don't use amps or effects, just use ToneStack on my iPad. As well as the amps/effects, it also has a BT player and 8-track recorder. If you're looking for just a BT player for an iPad, have a look at One Track, it could be just what you need. My iPad is mounted on a stand as shown:- Tim

Charlie,
Just out of interest, would any reverb have been added or is it just echo?

I've noticed on the track Walking In The Air that the echo is described as complex. I'm assuming it was a Roland RE-301 echo and wondered if anybody had the timings used. I'm trying to set it up on my iPad using ToneStacks multi-tap echo.
Thanks Tim.

I have finally finished the dry build of my 12-string Strat-type guitar. A couple of problems along the way:- The machine head securing screws were missing. The nut had been glued in as if it was a left-handed guitar. I had to remove it and swap it round. The supplied 12 string were just in a bundle, no size markings. I had to use a vernier gauge to measure them, then work out which ones they were. That being said, it does sound quite lovely, especially with a touch of chorus. Now to disassemble it ready for painting and varnishing. Tim.

Geoff,
Never used iTunes, hate it.
All my backing tracks are held in AudioShare. My Shadows ones from CD were ripped onto my PC, then transferred to AudioShare via local Wi-Fi transfer. My others from Karaoke Version go to Google Drive, then AudioShare.
AudioShare is a brilliant app and well worth having.
From AudioShare, I just select the track and select 'Open In..', the select ToneStack. They then go into the Tape list. Once in the tape list, you can use them in the Tapedeck or 8-track. You have to do them one at a time, but it doesn't take long. You can't import or create playlists in ToneStack.
If you want to play along to a playlist, have a look at the 'One Track' app, this allows you to import iTunes playlist, or create new ones on the fly. You could then use AudioBus and MiMix to play along to the selected playlist.
Hope this helps, if you need any more help just ask. It's good to have other iPad users on here.

Having now got a new 2017 128gb iPad, I've gone fully iPad with my new minimalist set-up. New set-up of 2017 iPad running Tonestack v3.0. Normally practice through headphones, but the iRig also has an amp out socket if I want to connect to monitors. app.box.com/s/aqhfufwl1nx4kfafruzn0tzlc06m9kcdiPad and iRig HD2: app.box.com/s/3xk7uyt6e010k4n0ti5gnejwleijplefMinimalist pedal board, just a BOSS FV-500H and iRig Blueboard. The pedal can be assigned to any MIDI parameter, so normally use it as a Volume or Wah, but it can control any variable control (i.e: Gain, Tone, Tremolo Speed, etc.). Each Blueboard switch can control multiple stomps, so can switch on, for example, boost and chorus together, or can change presets. MIDI setting are stored within each preset patch, so one patch for Shadows, one for Modern Hank, one for Gary Moore, etc. app.box.com/s/5nnz6tkjhueqw82zxn0okdyphvt5l63tWhilst it won't appeal to the purists, it's close enough for me. I'm loving the flexibility of this setup. The app also include all my backing tracks with the ability to slow down for practice, and there's also a dcent 8-track recorder. I'm not about to sell any of my analogue gear yet, but so far my experiment with it have proved very nice. Sorry about the links, not inline picture, but couldn't remember how to insert a picture. Dave,
Also, if you're looking for Hank's modern sound theres a decent Matchless 30 amp you can buy for a couple of quid.
And if you really get into it, look at Bias Amp.

Noel,
Thanks for the reply. I've reported the problems to Positive Grid and they have confirmed there is a problem with the email function. As yet, they haven't made any comment on the problem with Audiocopy.
I don't really hold out much hope for any fixes as I get the feeling they are more interested in the hardware side now with their Bias range.
However, I have found a good workaround using Audiobus and Multitrack DAW.
Unfortunately I am running on an iPad2, so IOS 9.3.5 is the final iteration for me. I've got my eyes on a new 2017 iPad, but would also need a new interface and, possibly, foot controller, so the cost all adds up.
Thanks,
Tim.

Having started to use JamUp again on my iPad, mainly due to playing many more different types of music, I am really impressed with the tones I am getting now.
It all seems pretty robust, except trying to get a recording made on the 8-track out.
Could I ask any other JamUp users:-
1) If you record something, can you then export it using Audiocopy. On my iPad the JamUp app just crashes.
2) Similarly, can you use the e-mail function. It doesn't let me edit the e-mail, so can't enter a recipient. All I can do is save the draft, then go to my e-mail app and send it from there.
I have raised tickets with Positive Grid, but don't hold out much hope for a fix soon. I am running on an iPad2, 32gb, IOS 9.3.5,so not sure if some of it is my old hardware.
I could use iTunes, but as I do everything else on my iPad, I really don't see why I should have to connect to a PC to get an audio file from one app to another. I may also investigate using Multitrack DAW along with IAA or Audiobus, but may have problems with my Airturn pedal.

I've got a VOX DA-5 which is the predecessor to the Mini Rhythm. It's a great little amp, so I reckon you won't go far wrong with the Mini Rhythm.

Ian,
Possibly if the pots don't work as they should.
I know the volume pots on my Tanglewood 335 copy only seem to reduce volume over the last 10% of travel. I would love to change them, but having seen whats involved on a 335 type guitar, have decided I can live with it.

Look at Justin Sandercoe's site, (www.justinguitar.com), for inspiration. I keep referring back to it. You could either let him follow it, or take ideas from it for you to teach.

Matthew,
Only got 2 amps, a VOX VT20+ which I love, great amp with so many tones. I also have a VOX DA-5 which I use for quick practices.
I must admit though, I quite fancy a Marshall Code 25.

Fender Classic 50's Strat ---> Bespeco Passive Volume Pedal ---> BOSS Blues Driver ---> Zoom RFX2000 with EFTP ---> VOX VT20+.
Sometimes replace the BD-2 with a BOSS ME-50 if I need extra effects.

Garry,
Obviously there's a slight difference between the 'line out/phones' and the output through the amps own speaker as your bypassing the power amp stage. However, the line out is supposed to emulate this so, to me at least, there isn't a lot of difference.
I tried various combinations, i.e: playing BT's through the amp, mic'ing up the amp, but finally settled on my current setup as I felt it gave my the flexibility and sound I was looking for.

Garry,
At the moment I use the phones O/P from my VT20+ into a mixer. My BT's are on a laptop whose O/P also goes into this mixer. I then take the O/P from this mixer into an old Sony stereo system. I find this gives me a decent sound. If required, I can listen through headphones and record as well. So I'm basically using my VT20+ as an amp modeller.
The mixer I use is an Alto ZMX52 which was only around £50 from Maplins.
The only problem I found with the V-Amp's sound was on more distorted sound, there was always a 'tail' to the sound that sounded like a cymbal. Bear in mind though that the V-Amp is quite old now and newer amp modellers may be better. I certainly don't have any such problems with my VT20+.
I tend to like 2 speakers, not necesarily stereo, as it gives a more immersive sound, even at lower volumes.
Hope this helps, Tim.

In the past, I tried not having a proper amp. I used a V-Amp2 into a pair of active speakers. When I got an iPad, I also tried using apps, such as JamUp, Amplitube, etc., instead.
Eventually, I came back to my VT20+.
The main reason, first I found I still needed some stomp boxes, i.e: CryBaby Wah. Second, I often needed 2, sometimes 3, channels for some of the stuff I was playing. The amp sims/apps didn't give me the flexibility I wanted. So, it was back to amps. This was a shame really as I really liked the idea of it all on my iPad, and I know some members have embraced it, and even gig with an iPad set-up.
Another reason is that as Apple updated their ios, my iPad wouldn't run the latest apps, and I couldn't justify the cost of a replacement just for music.
However, something like the Line6 Amplifi, Amplifi TT look interesting, trying to combine the best of both.
I think it all comes down to what you want to play, and what you need to achieve that.

Garry,
I play everything from Hank/Shadows to Guns'N'Roses. I find I can always get a decent tone out of my VT20+.
For Hank/Shadows stuff, I use a Zoom RFX-2000 with EFTP.

Garry,
I use a Vox VT20+. It's nominally rated at 20-30w, but has a power setting so it can put out much lower volumes, but still keeping the tone. It has 33 different amp sims and multiple effects.
I have been really impressed with it as I'm a home player only. Unfortunately, I think it has now been replaced in the Vox line-up, but you should still be able to find one.
I know if mine broke, I would try to replace it with the same.
Hope this helps,
Tim.

Phil, You can check on YouTube to see where, or if, songs are allowed. Some of them look quite odd. Check it out here, you may need to sign into YT to see it. www.youtube.com/music_policies?noapp=1I had problems when I tried to upload a cover of a Led Zeppelin song I had done. In the end I put it on Vimeo. Tim.

Ed,
If it's any help, I play my backing tracks directly from the headphone socket on my laptop directly into the Aux In. I'm using a Valvetronix VT20+, but guess the same will apply to the V20x. You need to play around a bit with the volume settings, but I get on alright withit.
I don't have a usb connection on my amp, so can't comment on that.
Hope that helps,
Tim.

Just watching Hank Plays Live and I noticed he had a fairly substantial pedalboard. There's obviously a volume pedal on it as you can see him using it at the end of Sleepwalk. He also uses it during Sacha.
I just wondered if anyone knew what his set-up was during this period.
I thought he was using a Matchless DC30 and Roland 301, but may be wrong.
