Not to throw a spanner into the works but - what was the Strat that Hank bought from Barratts of Manchester in the 60s when The Shads were playing across the road at the Palace Theatre? I seem to recall a photo in the now defunct ManchesterBeat but was it a sunburst?

Its all in the fingers - ? A few years ago a young lad (14-15) turned up at our Shads Club and asked if he could play. Well, he only had a cheap Squier, no use at all for Shadows tunes, but we let him play. It was on 10s, another no-no, but we let him play. He was left-handed, a hopeless case, but we let him play. He played through a Blues Junior via a Zoom2000EFTP - what was he thinking? But we let him play. But he was only a kid - what does he know? After he had done his turn, we were all crying at his 'performance' - he WAS Hank!! Despite everything, the sound, the phrasing, the 'feel', the nuances that we all seek so hard to emulate were all there, He had clearly taken the time to 'listen' to the records, probably watched those old videos over and over to see what Hank's hands were actually doing - and copied that. Suffice to say that he went on to be a Big Name in Shadows circles, playing Shadowmania more than once and finally fronting one of the most prestigious Shadows cover bands in the World. It's not what you've got, folks - it's how you use it. Lol Ian

Indeed Mick. We will never know - but I like it. Alan - I heard it banging out of a bar's 'lo-fi' system so no chance for a 'proper' listen. When we get home -. I find it oddly amusing that the Shads track I should hear 2000 miles from home and in such a low key place would be a 'rarity'. Ian

There's an undubbed version on "Shadows at Abbey Road" which I think is the single version minus strings. Hi Roger Found it on YT. You are spot on. Y'know I quite like that slimmed down version.

Sadly out of print now. My CD mysteriously disappeared from my Collection some years ago, leaving me with just a 128kps MP3 copy on my PC. If you DO find a source, let us all know. Ian

Not bragging or anything, but we are currently on hols in Fuerteventura and tonight in local bar I heard a version of one of my fave Shadows tunes - ATLANTIS - that I didnt recognise. Not that that means anything. Lol. It WAS The Shads or a very very good copy, unmistakable honking guitar tone and playing style. But there were NO backing strings and NO backing vocals - just the 3 guitars and drums. If its a help I thought the muted sections quite low in the mix and right at the end Hank makes a minor fluff in the Outro. Is there an alternative mix or version of it that fits those observations? Bar owner no help. The CD had no label Cheers Ian

Hi Ger Delightful tune and played with good feeling. I dont think we know the song in the UK so all I can say is that it makes great Instro. Reminds me in a way of Parisienne Walkways in its feeling. Cheers ian

I have to say that they look 'andsome.
An alternative solution to the problem of protruding saddle screws sticking in your palm when muting is to buy a set of them that are various lengths. Alan Brason did this when building my Strat back in 2007 and none of the screws protrude. However, on my Harley-Benton they are, physically, a real pain, so will check these saddles out. Cheers Ian

By the way - there is a free utility I have used which does a very good job of changing the tempo of an audio file without changing the pitch. It is called "TempoChanger" and you can download it from the website at: audiotrimmer.com I hope it's okay that I post this link, but maybe others might also find this useful, and it is free. I have other BTs which I thought were just too slow for my taste, and using this utility I could speed them up to a more lively and suitable tempo, and they still stayed exactly in tune - I think it's some kind of magic. Magic, indeed. I kept the ancient Adobe Audition 1.5 on my old XP drive when I went up to Win7 and that does a great job. But I'll check that Tempochanger out for my Win7. Thanks for the Heads Up. Hi ,it was created by a man called John Stallard, and he has a web site for his studio ,Cubby Hole Studios. He told me that there was going to be an arrangement where the track was sold by Leos Den .As an aside,he was recording another track with the same player, which is on the cubby hole site,an arrangement of a Justin Hayward track. If you come to Warwick Shadows Club,John is a member there, and John does preview some of his projects on there site,Strat21 Geg Palmer Hi Geg Hope you are keeping well. my granddaughter had one called "electric elf",remotely based on a very PINK strat.i spent a long time trying to get it in a playable condition but had to admit defeat. these things could put a kid off guitars for life.really expensive firewood !! Hi Andy So far it stands me at £5. I'll try a set of ElCheapo 9s on it, say £10 max. Its been heaps of fun so far. Cheers Ian

Hi I'm no expert, but it seems to me that with the shorter scale length, standard strings would have to be at considerably lower tension to get standard guitar tuning, which might explain the slackness on the lower frets? Maybe there are special short scale strings you can buy? Cheers Keith No idea, Keith but what is clear is that IF I tune it as a 6 sring Uke, it is more or less in tune but of course 5 frets up on a guitar tuning. Cheers ian

Hi Ian, Nut slots too high? Check the string to first fret gap when any string is pressed ahead of the second fret. Regards, Charlie Yep - they are way too high. I'll get to work. Thanks Charlie Ian

Hi Ian,a spare set of sperzels might do the trick... LMAO! This plank only cost a Fiver. Last nights Mad Thought was to upgrade it as a "Surprise Guitar" for Club Meets and use it to play Shads tunes. But then I sobered up. Cheers ian

Has anyone ever managed to get one of these to play? Its called an “iBurswood” and is clearly a childs mini-Strat copy. See photo - For those in doubt – its the smaller one. LOL! Bought in on a whim for a Fiver in local junk shop for my 7 year old GD who is learning on my Spanish and I thought it might just the right size for her to “progress”. It works electrically but so far I’ve been unable to tune it so that it can play anything. Although in pitch(ish) on 12th fret, the frets dont play good on-pitch notes generally and the strings, such as they are, seem very slack. It is more or less playable from the 5th fret upwards, its the lower ones 1 – 4 that are out most. Has anyone else ever had one? Is it meant to be tuned EADGBE or is it Uke tuning? Was it just meant to be some sort of Wall Candy? Any tips or hints. ANYTHING will be a Bonus. :-) Cheers ian

Hi Roberto Sad to read that you have stopped playing now. Your Music and your backing tracks have always been First Class. Recently I almost gave up too but in the end I did not - and am happy to continue but in a smaller way. Maybe you will do that? If not, then we look forward to seeing your Sale items and I hope that you get good offers for them. Best regards Ian

I'm surprised nobody's commented on the tempo,it's very slow. Quite so, Gary. But I like the Freshness of it and the "punch" so I'd give it a bit of a Gee-Up in my DAW if I had it. But thats just me.

Hi All Is anyone aware if the BT is available. I read somewhere that it is going to be sold by Leo's Den but have been unable to find it anywhere. www.youtube.com/watch?v=paYGYTvsoAg. Cheers. Neil Hi Neil, It's one of the tracks found on the UB Hank Vol. 1 CD sold by Leo's Den. rgds Soren No, its not Soren. UBH1 track is quite different and very much in keeping with the original. Its POSSIBLY a Peter Korving BT, and if it is, its at Leos Den - look for Volume 8. . Ian

Interesting Alan, my set-up is similar (except I dont have the 10 band EQ) but I have my G3X before the JoyoACTone as in a conventional "gigging" sort of sense. That works for me too. LOL! What do you feel is the benefit of this way round? Here to learn, Alan. If you want to keep the thread "clean" then PM me. OK? Cheers Ian

Hi Ove Goodness ! Its been many years since I heard this tune. I thought at the time it was a nice melody. It follows a very classical chord progression in an "Ave Maria" kind of way, if you can understand? Lovely recording. Played it twice and I found myself noodling a harmony to it second time around. Superb 60's tone on your guitar and toy playing style makes it perfect. Excellent. Ian

Try this, Richard app.box.com/s/7pcilepfvxpfztccwmlis89szwuamowtIts not exhaustive and may have some errors but its not a bad start. And it does say, on the right hand side what the actual echo units were supposed to be for each patch. I made it because I was playing at Club gigs around, all of which seemed to have a different echo in the backline. So I compiled a Cross-Reference list comparing my home Z2000EFTP and original Q2EFTP to a few others over time. I hope its a help. If not, nothing lost. Regards Ian

Hi Ove - Dont hide this in the Access For All section. It doesnt often get looked in to.
Absolutely superb!! Really hard driving playing, VERY reminiscent of The Shads early style. Great Double tracking too. Loved it!! Cheers Ian PS - can you share with us the origin of the BT?

AFAIK the 508 didnt come programmed with Shads echoes. But you can do it yourself. Go to www.goran.tangring.com and you'll see 508 parameters to input for many many tunes. Back in the day when the 508 was all we had, it did the job very well. Store them on board. HTH Ian
