Hi Geoff
I've got almost the same setup as you (original Zoom G2) with the addition of a Zoom FP02 foot pedal which allows me to play Cavatina, Somewhere etc. I've only got it set to control the Volume but looking at the instructions for the G2 it can be set to control a number of other effects (not that I've tried).
Incidentally what settings are you using on the Mustang?

Hi
I record on my PC by simply connecting the headphone socket on my amp to the line in on my PC without any problems. I use Audacity to record and there is a facility within it to allow for any latency. On my PC it's negligible regarding hearing what you play, 187 milliseconds, but it is just noticable if you mix the backing and recorded tracks together. Luckily you can set the latency value in Audacity and it automatically makes the correction for you.
Like the new microwave Charlie ;D ;D

Hi Les
If the scratch plates and headstock put you off have a look at the Vintage Reissued V6 series. I bought one at Christmas and am well pleased with it.

Hi Jed
Can you not program the patches manually as we had to on the previous G2 model. Not having one of the newer ones I'm not sure.

Hi Paul
It's also on the "Rarities" album. Collectors tracks from Hank and Shads.

I think that most of us agree that the amp and effects box together with the make up of the guitar (pickups, the wood the body is made from and also perhaps the neck, strings and in some of the latest threads I've seen even the type and thickness of paint used has been suggested) all go towards "That Sound".
One thing that I've never seen suggested is Hank himself. No not the way he plays but he has always since his teens been a pretty lean character hardly an ounce of spare flesh on him. My thought is, if he was built like Cyril Smith (for those who don't remember him he was a rather large UK MP known more for the waist size of his trousers than his politics) would Hank get the same sound.
I know that there are certain notes that when I hit them I can feel them reverberate through my body. Would a Cyril Smith soak up some of this reverberation more than a Hank?

Hi Alan
Just one thing you say that
I think that turning ANTI-clockwise looking at the head of the adjuster actually shortens the string. Turning clockwise pulls the saddle towards the adjuster, therefore, lengthening the string. (I do stand to be corrected of course)

Hi
I also found the same problem with Riders in the Sky. I can't remember if the Shads version was a half tone lower than the backing track or half a tone higher. What I did was load the original into Audacity and resave in the same key as the backing track.

I'm with Johnyboy on this, I've just purchased a V6 which I'm pleased with and it has the Wilkinson push in arm and the amount of slackness is controlled with a small grub screw under the tremolo plate.

Hi James I bought a couple of spare arms from AllParts for under a fiver each just in case!!! I managed to bend it without much of a problem. I clamped it in a vice with a piece of 10mm rod to give a smooth bend and used an adjustable spanner to do the bending. No damage to the chrome on the outside of the bend and just a small indent on the inside where the spanner jaws clamped the arm. This has made muting a lot easier and so is the pickup change during Atlantis. I also shortened the arm by about 15mm so that it is now 130mm from the bend to the tip which means that I'm plucking the strings between the neck and middle pickups. The important thing is to make sure the bend goes the right way otherwise instead of an easy-to-mute arm you'll end up with a hard-to-mute one. The finished arm. Attachments:

Hi Ken I would agree with with Ian. I've also had a G2 for about a year now and I'm very impressed with it (and Charlie's patches of course). Ian I've managed to persuade Charlie to match up some more tunes with his patches. Here are some he did for me a while ago : Africa b9 Equinoxe V C1 Granada A8 Mountains Of The Moon b6 Rodrigo's guitar concerto C1 Turn Around And Touch Me A7 or A8 and today he's come up trumps again if you look at this thread charliehall.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=stickied&action=display&thread=7013

Hi OK I went ahead and bought one of these and it seems pretty good. (Specky - I got the tuners but I didn't get the bride, just as well one wife's enough ) The G string seems to be a bit on the bright side, not that I'm one to complain about G strings ;D. Anyway back to the guitar. The overall sound is better than my previous guitar and the sustain is a lot better. I'll have to make some adjustments to the settings on my amp to cater for this, not that anyone except the wife will hear me as I'm only a bedroom player. I've got to change the way I play a bit as I was a bit lazy and tended to let one note run into the next by not moving my fingers off the previous note quick enough, but with more sustain this no longer sounds right. I've also found that the finger board is slightly wider but this isn't too much of a problem, it means I've got a bit more room to get my fingers on the strings.

Hi Anyone tried one of these guitars? I'm thinking mainly of the V6MFR on this page www.jhs.co.uk/vintageelectric.html The UK price is £259 but I can get one here in WARM SUNNY Cyprus for €238 so I was wondering if it's worth it. Strats cost a fortune here. Thanks

Hi Charlie
The original was on the "Rockin' With Curly Leads" album which I think came out in 1973, not sure what Hank was playing then, may still have been Burns?

Most members here seem to be after “That Sound”, but which one? The early original sound, the more modern (more polished??) sound or......
As “she who must be obeyed” has been away in the UK for a few weeks I’ve taken the opportunity to play through my Shads, and Hank, collection of LPs (which in the past have been copied to tape and now CD).
I started at the beginning with “The Shadows” and worked my way through the years.
I now find that although I still like the “original” sound of the late fifties/early sixties (if only for the nostalgia of those days) I do prefer the more modern sound. I find the early sound a bit raw and in some cases Hank’s guitar a bit thin.
Obviously these days there is a lot more post recording processing carried out than there was in the old days, what with Hank recording his part in Oz, Bruce and Brian doing there bits separately somewhere in the UK and someone (Warren?) stitching it altogether somewhere else, but part of the Shadows claim to fame in the old days was that they were one of the few (if not the only) groups who sounded that same on stage as they did on vinyl. Even now the sound is pretty close.
So we have the original and modern sounds but what about the or......
When I got to the early 1970s I came to 2 very different albums. First “Shades of rock” from 1970. If it wasn’t for the cover stating that it is a Shadows recording and the unmistakable style of Hank’s playing there is nothing Shadows like about the album, neither the sound nor the fact that there is no mention of their names on the cover, all you have is a “greaser” on a motor bike (could be Bruce I suppose).
The second, even more way out sound comes on the 1973 album “Rocking with curly leads”. This time there is a picture of the group on the cover and inside, and it was obviously done in the days of Marvin, Welch and Farrar with Brian on the drums and Alan Tarney on bass. What is even more strange about this album is that out of the 12 tracks, 10 of them were written by the Shads.
So what sound are we after, original, modern or early (and certainly different) 70's.
I think that anyone with an effects box with Charlie's patches is 70% of the way there whichever era they are after and this is good enough for me. I haven't got the patience, or money, to get that extra 20% that most members seem to be after. Note I didn't say extra 30% as I think the final 10% is down to the way Hank plays and I defy anyone, if it was possible, to walk on stage take Hank's guitar off him and get the same sound as he does.

Hi Ian This is what I did with my arm using a vice, a 10mm dia rod and an adjustable spanner. The other benefit is that it also shortens the arm. (This isn't the orignal arm, I bought a couple of spares from Allparts UK and modded one of them, only cost about a tenner). Attachments:
